We have to be honest – while your book is an incredible history of the city of Aleppo, it's also one of the most heartbreaking books we've ever read, given what's happened to Aleppo. What was that like, writing on deadline about a world-class treasure being destroyed in front of our eyes? Philip Mansel: The war made me more determined, as the city was being bombed, to record as well as I could, its people and monuments, to write down people's memories of a more peaceful and tolerant Aleppo. You've written extensively about the Middle East and the Levant. When was the last time you were in Aleppo? Are you in touch with anyone there? Philip Mansel: I was last in Aleppo in 2004, for a conference. It appeared peaceful and to be preparing for a tourist boom. Buildings were being restored. The cafes were livelier. I am in touch with friends from Aleppo who are outside it, and hear the latest news through other friends. Always contradictory, depending on the point of view. What do you think you'll miss the most about Aleppo? Is there any chance the city can come back? Has it before? Philip Mansel: I will miss the markets, the explosion of sounds and smells and experiences which it contained; the old houses; the mixtures of Christian and Muslim. It came back after the devastations by Hulagu, the mongol conqueror in 1260 and by Timur Lenk in 1400; but this civil war has lasted four years; I wonder if trust between inhabitants and pride in the city will return. Disappointing. No photos. Only 60 pages by Mansel. The rest is from existing literature. Aleppo deserves better treatment than this.

This is a worthy follow-up on Mansel's great book Levant: Splendour and Catastrophe on the Mediterranean. I loved the rare insights provided and have now have purchased another copy as a gift for friend who visited the city in happier times.

Well written and researched and summarizes the history of a city currently being destroyed by events. I have visited Aleppo many times over the years and the book captures its character and explains its glorious past.

Interesting work. Much information. Not artfully written.

I was waiting for more scholarship on this book, however, it is more a compilation of previous works from old times.

I have read that Aleppo was once a vibrant city, one in which Christians, Jews and Muslims lived and traded together in peace. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. Aleppo is an ancient, diverse city. In Aleppo’s long period as one of the oldest, continuously inhabited cities it has been successively ruled by the Assyrian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Arab, Ottoman and French empires. Because of its location at the end of the Silk Road, Aleppo became the third largest city in the Ottoman Empire. For 400 hundred years, British and French consuls and merchants lived in Aleppo, which was famous throughout the region for its food and music. How recognisable is this Aleppo today?‘States and religions are killing Aleppo. People and monuments are dying. Satellite imagery shows that there are now almost no lights at night in the city.’In this book, Dr Philip Mansel describes Aleppo’s decline from power, a city currently shattered by Syria’s ongoing civil war. Many people have been killed and the ancient Old City has been devastated. There are two parts to this book. Part I provides a summary of Aleppo’s history, and Part II provides a view of Aleppo through the eyes of travellers between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries (from the travels of Dr Leonhart Rauwolff in the sixteenth century, to those of both Gertrude Bell and Leonard Woolley in the first two decades of the twentieth century).In Part I, Dr Mansel focusses on Aleppo’s significance as a junction between the East and the West, its role as a great merchant city. While this is clearly the focus of the book, I’d have also liked to learn more about Aleppo’s pre-Muslim history. In Part II, I enjoyed reading the different accounts of Aleppo at different times over the past four hundred years. There’s a contrast between past and present which is both informative, and sad. What does the future hold for Aleppo? Before the civil war, it was Syria’s largest city. Can it be again? I am a big fan of Tamara Lackey, and I enjoyed this book. I really like how her personality comes through in her writing and her photographs. She understands children and explains how to deal with various (sometimes difficult) situations that arise when photographing them. She also shows how to tell a story and bring out personalities with your photographs. If you like to get children outside in a fun environment and create life-style photographs and memories for clients, then this is a great book for you. It could also be helpful in studio situations too I guess, even though those photos are seem posed and stiff sometimes. Tamara's approach to photographing children is practical and she comes across as relatable. She explains how to connect with children, make them feel at ease, and draw out their little personalities. She explains how to do this, and at the same time, remain professional throughout the entire process. I think this book is great for anyone who expects to photograph children in their photography business. She offers very practical advice.

The book gives a general overview of what to expect and how to go about pursuing this genre of photography. Currently in my first year pursuing my own path as a children's photographer, I was hoping for some more in-depth material related to the title but as stated earlier it's all very general. I figure if one is just starting out this information would be useful in helping to guide them. If you've had a good few months of effort with test shoots and actual sessions along with having gone through the process of defining your business plan and structuring yourself for success the information here may not be as informative.

Overpriced drivel that was more common sense than anything else..

There's some really good information in this book for anyone looking to start out. And there are a few tips that even an established professional can pick up on the way through. It's really neat to see what Tamera is thinking behind the scenes and her insight and experiences are very interesting. Overall a great book for beginners and an OK book for someone already in the business.One thing I noticed is that it's geared towards one type of business model and that's meeting before, shooting photos, and meeting after. I completely understand that it's a very valid way of working a portrait business and will net some very good income, but not one business model will fit all photographer's situations. Really that's a style that you either work up to as you build your business or it's something only the uneasily shaken photographers can dive right into :)

I checked this book out from the local library and knew within the first chapter it's a book that would be one to own. Tamara's writing style is humorous and educated. She knows what she's writing about and writes in a way that makes you want to keep reading. This book is not filled with tons of technical terms and jargon, and instead constains countless examples of beautiful kiddos with an explanation of how each shot was created. I love that at the end of the book she includes some of her worst mistakes and what she wishes she would have done different. After reading this book in about an hour, I came here to Amazon and bought this one and one more by the same author. This is a welcomed addition to my photography collection.

Tamara Lackey's warmth and connection to children really shine through her writing. In her book, Tamara describes what contemporary children's photography is and how to achieve it.The chapters are packed full of ideas and techniques on how to interact with children to get them engaged and how to deal with their different personalities. The section on posing is rather skimpy, but that seems to be exactly the goal of Tamara's style of photography. Instead of placing the children into poses, she directs them to be themselves and to play. While they talk, play, and laugh, she catches their authentic expressions and their naturally dynamic, beautiful poses.I was particularly thankful for Tamara's acknowledgment that everyone does not naturally have an amazing talent with children. All hope not is not lost for such people, though, because she provides advice on how to draw children in and get connected with them in order to get the shots.The sections on lighting, equipment, and business management and marketing were somewhat typical for a children's photography book. Her business advice is geared toward creating a boutique-style photography business. However, I appreciated that the advice was given with the newbie in mind. Tamara provides advice on establishing a workflow for a photographer (who is actually three people in one--entrepreneur, manager, and technician) so that he is not left with more and more work and no time for family or the rest of life.The many gems of knowledge in Tamara's book make it well worth the first, second, and third reads.

I purchased this book along with a couple of other photography books. At first skim trough, I wasn't honesty sure if I was going to love it. While some of the photography is lovely, there is a certain quality to the photos that seems a little outdated. Photography seems to be all about new and trendy images and this book lacked that grabbing quality to me at first glance. However, once I really delved into the context of this book, I was very pleased. It has a lot of great information about the business end of photography and because of that is a GREAT resource for professional photographers and those who are interested in perspiring the professional side of photography. Like I said, photography books these days seem to be a lot about modern, trendy images pulling you in at first glance. But without a great understanding and grasp of the business end, photographers won't get anywhere. I highly recommend adding this book by Tamara Lackey to your photography book collection!

Volume one shows that Sanders erred: there is no one view that dominated all Jewish thought before the time of Christ (or shortly thereafter). Volume 2 (I am still reading it) then completes the project by demonstrating that the "New Perspective" may be "new," but it is not correct. The Reformers really did know what they were talking about.But whether you are debating the "New Perspective" or not, you will find this volume rich! You will sharpen your understanding of the thinking of the Jewish world from about 200 B.C. to about 100 A.D. You will delve into the Apocrypha, the Pseudepigrapha, the Talmud, etc.; those who want to better understand the Jewish Roots of the Christian Faith will also appreciate this volume.This book is not intended for the average layman, but a trained pastor can understand this work (which is all I am; I am no scholar). Although a few parts are dry, other portions are absolutely fascinating.Does the book accomplish its goal? Absolutely.

This book is a true find! I must say it is not easy reading however. It includes 15 essays (usually 20-60 pages each), each surveying the concept of righteousness in a particular group of Jewish writings. This volume is intended to be the basis for volume 2 in which Pauline theology will be analyzed. The set overall is an examination of the "New perspective" theology which claims that Christians have mislabelled Judaism as a "works for salvation" or merit-based religion.

Wow. This book was painful for me. I've read all of her publications (including by her pseudonym), and she was an auto-buy. But this book was just painful. Usually the flash forward/back doesn't bother me, but when 88% of the book vacillates back and forth with me not caring what happens to the depressingly flat main character? Well...I just didn't like it.I had tweeted to Ms. Williams asking for a family tree of her books. I never received a reply. When I finished this book and saw that she finally connected it to another...well...heck, I don't even remember that book Beatriz. I read a lot of books. I can't keep all your facts straight when you go back and forth and back and forth. I'm sorry. I really wanted to like this. I just felt like this book was all build up to a "oh wait lemme flip that oh lemme flip that again oh look did you see what I did there? HAHA dear reader I don't care what you think" ending.I'm writing this review so that I remember not to buy any future books. And sadly, I'm pulling her from my twitter authors list so that I don't make the mistake again. That is how strongly I feel. It is only 2 stars because I did manage to finish it.

I first read Beatriz Williams' Along the Infinite Sea, which I thoroughly enjoyed - the characters, the plot twists, the time period. Naturally, I turned to Cocoa Beach, her latest release, to read more Beatriz Williams. Cocoa Beach is a fairly good book, but there is too much going on - too many characters with confusing pasts (hard to determine what is true and what other characters lie/misrepresent about each other). I never really grew to like Virginia - she's so noncommittal, hesitant, and seemingly frail - but (maybe?) strong. I didn't really buy into the love affair between Virginia and Simon (she, too hesitant; he, to quickly "in love" with her).A few of the events in the book were never fully explained: What really happened to Virginia that moonless night on the beach? Why was she given the medication she was given at Maitland? Mr. Marshall's role in the story? The revelation, at the end, of Virginia's father? Lydia's role in the entire book? I read the book not really all that interested in the characters, but wondering what would happen in the end.I also found what seem to be a few editing mistakes: page 105 - Virginia is sitting with Hazel to her left, Johnson to her right - but then Green starts speaking to Virginia. Chapter 29 - the date given is July 22 - yet chapters 28 and 30 take place on July 25.. Did we go back in time for a moment? It seems as if the story is simply continuing, from the hotel in Cocoa (Chapter 28) to the highway outside Winter Park (Chapter 29).All in all, the book is entertaining - I enjoyed the setting - the time and place make me want to read more of Beatriz Williams' books - but I hope the next B.W. book I read is more like the engaging, colorful, and interesting Along the Infinite Sea.

I really enjoyed her books "Tiny Little Thing" and "A Certain Age" but I did not enjoy this book as much as the others. I felt it dragged quite a bit and parts of it were confusing as it vaulted between time periods.I did like the twist involving Simon, Samuel and Clara and did not see parts of that twist coming so the element of surprise was good. However the ending left me totally confused as I have no idea who arrives with Marshall at the end of the book. I did look up online to see if I had missed something in the book that would explain the ending and the only thing I saw was to read her book "Wicked City" to find out the identity of the arrivals. Personally, I found that suggestion a bit frustrating.

Oh yes it had all the above, but it felt as if it were a nightmare spinning out of control. Not my type of book unfortunately, because I bought it having read other more enjoyable novels written by Ms. Williams. I'm sure there will be other novels written by her, I'll just have to be less trusting of the reviews and more judicious in my choice! To make matters worse, the ending left you hanging in the balance, assuring the reader there would be a sequel. Indeed, if that is the case, I will borrow it from the library (if I even do that)!

I am completely clueless about the ending! The last 20pages had so many " twists" to the plot I was loosing which character was which until by the ending I didn't even care.

Read and loved all the other Beatriz Williams books and was so excited about reading this one. Sadly this one is not like the others. The story is confusing, with lots of unanswered questions. None of the characters were particularly engaging or likeable, and like others I also struggled to believe the love story. A big 'meh' from me.

I hadn't read Ms. Williams last book, A Certain Age, yet, but I knew I had to do that before I read this book because her characters always make peek appearances in future books. I really need a detailed family tree of connections, please. But, I was really glad I did. While I really liked the characters of Sophie and Octavian in A Certain Age, the story itself didn't keep me on my toes like Cocoa Beach did. The entire time I was reading Cocoa Beach, I was unsure whether Simon was good or bad. Would he be Virginia's one true love or her huge mistake. I love how the trials of her childhood (that we learned about in Certain Age), came back to haunt her and her choices in this book. It really kept me on my toes until the last moment. As always, you get drawn in to the time period that Ms. Williams writes about and into her characters lives as if they were your next door neighbor. This was a thoroughly enjoyable and well written summer read.
