By FAR, the best book in his Great Lives series. I've read them all several times. The reason Moses is the best, is the lessons, insights, and life applications that Chuck draws out of a story that you've likely heard and read several times. If you haven't read this book, I would highly recommend it, although any of the Great Lives books are good to revisit for personal study, sermons, or Bible study material.My favorite part was Chapter 5: "The Desert: School of Self-Discovery." In this chapter, Chuck highlights how we all go through desert seasons where God seeks to train us up, similar to Moses 40 years in the wilderness of Midian and Mt. Sinai. Chuck endearingly calls this God's "Wilderness University" or "Desert University," and describes the 4 "majors" that God provides in his curriculum, as he trains up a man or woman of God. Chuck reuses these themes in ALL of his Great Lives series and applies them to David, Elijah, Esther, etc.The following "majors" or life lessons are:1) Obscurity- God uses obscurity to break down our pride/ego, remove our desire to "be in the limelight," and to be humble/willing to be used by Him2) Time/Waiting- God uses time to grow our patience and reliance on Him3) Solitude- God uses solitude, to give us time to reflect, remove busyness from our lives, and to develop our ability to stand for God, even when the "crowd" or others don't.4) Discomfort- God uses discomfort to develop our ability to tolerate hardship and "be content in all things" as Paul says in the New Testament.

I was interested in learning more about King David, but wanted something more like a "novel," than a heavy in-depth biography. I never seemed to find anything like that, but went with this one because of the author's reputation. Swindoll provides an entertaining account of the events in David's life, using scripture and also lively contemporary language. What I did not expect, but have enjoyed, is that he also draws parallels between David's actions and other Bible events, and also applies to modern life some lessons to be learned from David. I have found these digressions from a "just the facts, ma'am" approach to be interesting and, in some cases, thought-provoking. If, however, a reader would prefer a book that is strictly a biographical account of David's life, this may not be the best choice. I gave it 4 stars because occasionally the author gets a bit too preachy.

I've always admired Dr. Chuck Swindoll's radio ministry, as I believe he preaches the unadulterated Word of God. His Insights For Living are lessons I have carefully listened to and tried to apply to my own life. A while back, I recall him doing a series of radio programs on the life of King David, and I believe those programs resulted in him writing this book.I heartily recommend this book to those who desire a study of King David and his life and times. Swindoll takes his information directly from Kings and Chronicles, and considers the life of David from when he was a young boy tending his father's sheep, to an old man of 70, about to die. Swindoll tells King David's story and the lessons Christians can learn from the most written about person in the entire Old Testament. Swindoll is a list-maker, and in each chapter he provides a list of key ideas or lessons to be learned by King David's attitude or actions that are applicable to believers today. For example, what kind of mindset is required to face down a giant challenge, such as a Goliath? What does it mean to be "A man after God's own heart?" How can a man of faith commit adultery and then have a man murdered in order to steal his wife? What should our response be with our children rebel against us? These and many more questions are asked and answered in Swindoll's book.I am using this book as a nightly Bible study and I can hardly wait to get to bed to read another chapter. I have enjoyed this book so much that I will likely purchase the next book in his series on Biblical characters.I knew very little about King David before beginning this study, and as I come to the conlcusion of the book, I feel I know the general outlicne of David's life so much better, and have improved insights into his personality, his struggles, his moral failings, and his faith in his God. David's life is one of great contrasts. Since he is the most written about person in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit must want us to learn about this Man of God, and learn how he failed and how he suceeded in his walk of faith.This is not a difficult book to read. Swindoll writes for the average reader, yet has insights and clarity that will benefit the church deacon or pastor. I most highly recommend this book as a great starting point to learn about the greatest King of Israel.konedog

Bought this book because I needed some more fluid info on David, more chronological for the retreat I was about to speak at. Wow! Every chapter ministered to my soul and spoke to me in such deep ways. You can almost read this like a devotional because swindoll puts little nuggets in every chapter that will challenge you in deep ways. This book is a keeper. You won't be seeing mine resold on amazon!

My parents named me "David" so I wanted to learn more about the life of the one God chose who was named David. It was a great book; good reading and well organized. Lots of scripture was used to describe David's life. I will probably buy some more in Chuck Swindoll's Bible character series.

From my earliest days of accepting Christ, I have loved Chuck Swindoll. His writing is so clear and the everyday application so practical. This book was no exception. Examining the life of David with application from every period of his life allowed me to feel that God can use anyone to accomplish his purposes.

I ordered this book, after sitting in for the Admin at church. There I read the first 3 chapters and was hooked. Swindoll writes as if he is talking with you in common, every day language so it is easy to understand and a joy to read the story. I love it so much that I ordered one for my Aunt to read with me. So, if you're looking for something great to read and love the Bible story of David, I'd say give this one a try.

Perhaps because of his unorthodox background Tian approaches the investing process in a scientific way, picking apart the strategies of successful investors to see how they work. Much of Invest Like a Guru – and GuruFocus too, for that matter – is focused on the strategies of wildly successful value investors such as Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch and Donald Yacktman.The dominant theme of the book is quality. Buffett famously said “It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price,” and Tian spends most of Invest Like a Guru expanding on that core idea. Chapter 6 is particularly useful as a 20-point checklist of criteria to look for when seeking out quality companies, including consistent profitability, capital efficiency and insider ownership.But while Invest Like a Guru is full of solid advice in what to look for in a stock, it’s far more useful in telling you what to avoid. As a case in point, Tian dedicates a chapter to deep-value investing, and I personally consider this the most important chapter in the book. I myself have gotten suckered into deep-value plays in the past, and they rarely seem to work out as planned or on the timeframe I had hoped.Deep-value investing is what Warren Buffett called “buying dollar bills for 40 cents” earlier in his career. Later, he mostly eschewed the strategy, calling it “cigar-butt” investing.The rationale is easy enough to understand: It’s hard to lose money buying a company that is worth more dead than alive. If a company’s net assets are worth significantly more than its current market price, management could sell off the company for spare parts and deliver a decent profit to shareholders. And generally, that would be the right move. Remember, if a stock is trading that cheaply, chances are good that it is a company with very deep problems.The problem is that it never quite works out that way. Monetizing assets is messy and complicated, and management has a vested interest in keeping the enterprise going. And the longer they do, the more value gets eroded.As a case in point, consider the case of Sears Holdings. Eddie Lampert and Bruce Berkowitz – both respected value investors – have effectively bet their careers on Sears in the belief that its real estate and brand portfolios represented massive untapped value. They problem is that the Sears retail business continues to deteriorate around them. They may eventually unlock the value they had hoped to, but it will have cost them dearly in money, reputational damage and – perhaps most importantly – opportunity cost. Had they focused their energies elsewhere, they might have made far better profits with far less headache.Buffett himself learned the same lesson with Berkshire Hathaway, which was a failing textile producer when Buffett originally bought it. Berkshire eventually failed, but only after Buffett had wasted untold time and energy (not to mention money) trying to keep it afloat. Buffett called his purchase of Berkshire Hathaway a “$100 billion mistake.”Tian finishes the chapter with the simple observation that “There are better ways to make money.”If you’re new to value investing, I highly recommend Invest Like a Guru. But even if you’re a seasoned investor, you’ll find plenty of insightful food for thought. My compliments to Tian on a solid addition to the value investor’s library.

I wish I had read this brilliant book ten years earlier! If I had, many of my investing mistakes during the past could have been avoided. As an amateur investor, I have explored quite a lot of books in the bookstore, including some of the best sellers. Dr. Charlie Tian’s book is like none of them. Although most of this book’s wisdom, principle, theory and practice are drawn from well-known investment gurus, Dr. Tian went many steps further to provide readers with a practical investment process, and as well as a holistic framework for value investing.In my opinion, Dr. Tian has quantified some important concepts in value investing, and use financial indicators to measure them, such as using constant high profit margin to measure a company’s economic moat, so the art part of the investing become more like science.You don’t need to have a Finance degree to understand this book’s key concepts. Adding humor to cut and dried materials, Dr. Tian effectively used many metaphors so even a high school student can relate and follow. Warrant Buffet’s wisdom is not out of reach any more.I think many readers will agree with me that the investing wisdom in this book can be applied to many areas of one’s life, for example, marriage, shopping, career, and entrepreneurship. So, the earlier you read this book, the more intelligent in general you will become. Two thumbs up!

You can learn the hard way or learn from other people's experiences. Instead of enrolling in the school of hard knocks, stand on the shoulders of investment giants and get a real investment education. Learn to think like an investment guru so your portfolio returns can be like them too. The more you learn (generally) the more you earn. Instead of buying Value Traps learn to stay clear of them. Dr. Charlie Tian has learned many valuable Value Investing lessons which he distills down in his wonderful book. I couldn't put it down and I finished it in a day. This is a quick read, but it's filled with a wealth of knowledge. Invest in your financial education and it will likely pay tremendous dividends. If you won't invest in yourself why should anyone invest in you. This book may be a stepping stone to help you "Invest like a Guru".

If you are new to investment world, you might find it useful. However you will get very limited new things from this book. In addition, the approach the author takes is very much financial statements driven, while he does not offer or pay attention to industry, company, products, strategy etc. The author constantly refers to his website. This is more like marketing material of his website promotion, less of a book about investment. Gurus do not simply and solely rely on numbers.

I would highly recommend this for those searching for a body book with a Christian tone. Of course nothing can replace heart-to-heart conversations with mom, but this is a good supplement and resource for tween daughters who are undergoing "changes". Definitely a great conversation starter - best read together with mom so further questions can be offered or additional advice given.Other "body" books for girls were no-nos for me - like the American Girl Care and Keeping Book 2 which had drawings of how to insert a certain feminine product (So crude and unnecessary - would a girl really learn just from drawings?) Apparently, the AG Book 1 has no such drawings and seems pretty benign, but I chose this one for the following reasons:- Written by 2 family doctors - one male and one female - who are raising or have raised daughters themselves. Facts are presented scientifically but delicately.- Easy to understand short chapters with each title formulated as a question. Engaging, with anecdotes, Scripture verses too- Unapologetically Christian but not overly preachy in talking about God's plan for you, purity, modesty, temptation etc.- Prolife - talks with awe about fertilization and how this new HUMAN then implants in the uterusA few words of caution (and reason for removing one star):- As the note to parents says in the beginning, it is best to read the book yourself FIRST and decide if the child is mature enough for book or certain topics.- The last few chapters are definitely more mature, and include topics like sexting, predators, STD etc. - but since those chapters are towards the end, it is easy to delay reading until child is mature enough for them.- Intercourse IS mentioned briefly but not discussed earlier in the book, so best to hold off on this book completely if you're not prepared to give "the talk" yet.For those looking for "non-body" books for tween girls -- or even pre-tweens since there is no mature material included -- that help girls discover their inner beauty and worth FIRST rather than just focus purely on bodily changes, I highly recommend: "All Things Girl: Friends, Fashion and Faith", 2013 version.Update: 1/25/2108 Just wanted to add, I’ve found the book “Beyond the Birds and the Bees” invaluable as well. It gives some helpful words to use and ways of phrasing of ideas about this topic that can be started even from toddler years! It definitely helps to “prep” both parent and child for the later years. This isn’t just a one-and-done kind of “Talk” after all.

This was purchased for my niece, and her parents are satisfied with it. I purchased the same book for my son, making the decision to purchase for my niece, as her parents were looking for something to supplement the talks about puberty and changes within the body. Both families LOVE the fact that the book is Biblical based, referring to scripture throughout the book aiding in explanation. The girls version of this book is lengthier than the boys, but still brought down to a very manageable read for kids who are in this stage of their life. Extremely satisfied!

Bought this book for my niece who is in fourth grade. This is such a great book! Heard about it on focus on the family and I am so glad I remembered it. It asks a lot of relevant question and supports the answers biblically with statistics and scripture. This is great for the parents to read along too.

If you're a conservative Christian parent of girls, then this book is for you. If you are not a Christian it's still good. There are many truths regardless of religious beliefs. For example, it talks about being abstinent because it is a sin well..it's also dangerous because of STD's and broken hearts. Its still wisdom.

Bought this for my neice. It was perfect and just in time.Good solid information, age appropriate. I would rather open that conversation with her, than have friends or t.v. try to answer these questions for her.It has been a blessing for us!
