From the Inside Flap

"The book demonstrates a rigorous analysis of the social character of religion in light of historical changes and enduring cultural practices. Focusing on the Yoruba of Nigeria and in the Diaspora, Peel examines the role of culture-specific factors in the transmission and reception of Christianity and Islam in Nigeria, setting out a convincing case for how the cultural past shapes and is shaped by contexts and circumstances. The book uses comparative analysis to engage the 'doctrinal' system of religion in relation to its concrete and dynamic expression, providing guidelines for a wider application for that approach to the study of religion in other parts of the world. The essays are lucid and probing, a work of real skill and erudition, and a critical standard of scholarship."—Lamin Sanneh, D. Willis James Professor of World Christianity and Professor of History at Yale Divinity School "This superb collection of essays brings together John Peel’s fifty years’ of research and reflection on religion in Yorubaland, and then goes further, pushing into previously untrodden ground. It presents a comprehensive view of some of the biggest issues, and yet is informed and illustrated throughout with meticulously researched  empirical detail. It is thus able convincingly to counter a number of prevailing misconceptions and generalisations about Yoruba culture and history. It is a revivifying shot in the arm for comparatism, and an invitation to think afresh about the relations between Christianity, Islam and orisa-religion both within Nigeria and in the wider world."—Karin Barber, Professor of African Cultural Anthropology at the University of Birmingham "Three great religious traditions are brilliantly united in path-breaking analyses that are cogently grounded in the long history and diverse experiences of the Yoruba, including current manifestations. Powerfully communicating an unparalleled understanding of religious conversion, education, progress, modernity, new movements in Christianity and Islam, religious co-existence and violence, this great book restores value and merit both to comparative methodology and the historical approach, while uncompromisingly affirming the centrality of religion to all aspects of society."—Toyin Falola, President of the African Studies Association at the University of Texas at Austin and editor of Christianity and Social Change in Africa: Essays in Honor of J.D.Y. Peel

Aldous Huxley, take on spirituality and the base of all religions as seen through the eyes of saints and spiritual leaders. It's a life changing beautifully written book. Aldous Huxley is one of the greatest minds of our time. (As an advice, this was my first spiritual book outside the Bible, so it was kind of a Perennial Philosophy crash course for me. Some words are difficult to understand, so it's better to have a background on other religions to fully understand.)

This is a book that I think I will be referencing back to for the rest of my life. If you basically want to understand the entire perspective of a Western thinker on the commonalities of Eastern religion and mysticism as well as Christian mystic thought, this is the book. Think of it as the complete tutorial on what people *think* they're saying when they utter the cliche "I'm not religious but I'm spiritual." Now if a person were truly that, and very intelligent as well, then this book explains how they might think about God, self, universe, time, idolatry, salvation, truth, good, evil, immortality, mortification, charity, prayer... yeah, you name it everything you've stuffed in a closet in the back of your mind and called it 'religion' is presented here from the mystic point of view and collected wisdom of multiple 'religions'.This might properly be called, at least I will, the set of ultimate goals for the self, or perhaps the self-less perfection of the realization of the divine in the individual and the purpose of all human consciousness. I'm not used to speaking this way, it will take me some time to get through all of the material in this course of study, but I can feel it working on me.Several years ago I wrote that all I care about is wisdom. This is true. But one tends to think of wisdom as an attribute of the self. The Perennial Philosophy extends that challenge beyond the self (and yet within the self) towards the human infinite. So instead of the pursuit and capture of wisdom like a trophy to put on your mantle and show off, the Perennial Philosophy explains that this is an attainment of psychic, spiritual as well as intellectual dimensions. There's some speculation in this which is especially clunky in the dated volume which contemporaries more well versed in psychology will easily spot. Also Huxley had been taken in by claims of faith healing and ESP that should not be taken seriously, but he seems to understand this. Also the book gets a bit murky in dealing with the concepts of time vis a vis Time and Eternity. And yet the book becomes quite persuasive in describing how nations and religions and philosophies that deal with reality in progressive time rather than in eternal timelessness, inevitably make bloody violent sacrifices to time (God the destroyer of all things, in time).Huxley presents a convincing case for the unification of purposeful thought in this volume by taking contextualized quotes from a variety of wise ancients and mystics. It puts, for me, God back where God should belong in all thought, and the discipline of finding God central in human moral purpose.I am convinced that this is the kind of material that is central to the human experience. It clears up a lot of things.

This book is nothing short of a masterpiece. Not only because it's content is brilliant, but because Huxley put it together with such brightness, that only a genius mind could do it. The Perennial Philosophy is a manual for anyone interested in Eastern Philosophical and Religious Thought. It goes deep inside the heart and teachings of the most influential Mystics that ever lived. The book is practical, clear and detailed, covering important subjects that would take many students years to collect from several different sources.Huxley proves brilliantly the Unity, Truth and Wisdom behind most religions. They all share a common source and ground that passes from faith, repentance and death to self into a divine nature of pure love and joy. He covers topics such as "Personality, Sanctity, Divine Incarnation, God in the World, Charity, Truth, Grace and Free Will, Good and Evil, Rituals", etc. So many important topics for one interesting in pursuing a divine path with a sincere heart toward God. Here are just a few quotes to inspire you to read this book:"Liberation cannot be achieved except by the perception of the identity of the individual spirit with the universal spirit""The best that can be said for ritualistic legalism is that it improves conduct. It does little , however, to alter character and nothing of itself to modify consciousnesses""What could begin to deny self, if there were not something in man different from self?""Love seeks no cause beyond itself and no fruit; it is its own fruit, its own enjoyment.""To the extent that there is attachment to "I", "Me" and "Mine", there is not attachment to, and therefore no unitive knowledge of, the divine ground""Everything is ours, provided that we regard nothing as our property""To find or know God in reality, by any outward proofs, or by anything but by God himself made manifest and self-evident in you, will never be your case either here or hereafter. For neither God, nor heaven, nor hell, nor the devil, nor the world, and the flesh, can be any otherwise knowable in you, or by you, but by their own existence and manifestation in you. And all pretended knowledge of any of these things, beyond or without this self-evident sensibility of their birth within you, is only such knowledge of them, as the blind man hath of that light, that never entered into him.""You are as holy as you wish to be""if most of us remain ignorant of ourselves, it is because self-knowledge is painful and we prefer the pleasures of illusion.""Turning to God without turning from Self"- the formula is absurdly simple; and yet, simple as it is, it explains all the follies and iniquities committed in the name of religion"Enjoy the book!

There are 2 items that are necessary for a successful religion. First is a moral code or high standard of living, the second is a purpose to life inherent in the future, whether the present life future or the eternal future. This provides an additional capacity of long term stability. So it is with the long-lasting of world's religions, while the others have a basis of sand and eventually dissipate. This is excellent study for a depth in religion thought.

This is a book that reveals the basic development of spirituality without regard to religions. It could be thought of as the backbone of religions without the limitations. It is a scholarly work but could be of interest to anyone seeking a higher way.

This is a must have classic on our shared human values and philosophy. Aldous Huxley is a superb writer, who has applied all his skills in presenting to us the timeless shared ideas that can be found in multiple cultures and faiths throughout the world. His insights can help to heal the wounds of division and alienation that cause so much unnecessary suffering in the world today. This book should be required reading for every teacher and preacher.

This was a good read. I won't give you a synopsis of the book as you can read it above. I will say that I read almost all the books my pre-teens read to make sure that they are suitable for their ages. My daughters both enjoyed this book as did I.

I loved this book. Such a touching story of loss, change, and grieving. I highly recommend this book to young adults and up!

The company that l work make this book And had to have it

This is a companion book to Love, Lucas. That one was about the sister of boy who died from cancer. This one was about the girlfriend of the same boy.Well, they never actually were officially boyfriend/girlfriend, but she lived next door to him for years and loved him forever. They only confessed just before he died. Sadness. And so this story picks up a few months later and she is still dealing with his death and his loss.So she immerses herself into her love and hobby of mountain bike racing. There's a new-ish boy (it's been about a year since he moved in) that has bugged her since he arrived and who actually took over her position as captain of the bike team. She does not like him.Which means, of course, that they will connect! And so that's the love story. He's had his eye on her since the beginning but she has been annoyed by him. All that changes of course, and he is not what she thought he was. It's a blast to read/watch unfold.Meanwhile, she has her family life situation to deal with too, which is that her mom is suffering from early onset Alzheimers. More sadness. Yes.But despite all this sadness, I totally enjoyed this book. Fast and easy to read. Lovely romance. Cute characters. Fun look at mountain biking, which... why would anyone do this? CRAZY!

Thank you to Sky Pony Press for providing me a copy of book in exchange for a fair review.Emmy hasn't been dealing with things well, she quit the mountain bike team after Lucas's death and hasn't won first place in a long time. Just when things are starting to look up she finds out that her mom has been diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer. Now she is trying to navigate her feelings for Cole, her place on the team and the reality of losing her mom as she knows her. Then an accident almost changes everything and Emmy has to decide what is really important.I am going to note that I didn't realize this was a sequel or a follow up until after I started reading it. Love, Lucas is the first book. However, I didn't feeling like I was missing anything by not having read it first. Emmy is a passionate mountain biker who is still kind of reeling from Lucas dying a year ago.Lucas is Emmy's first love, but they really never had a relationship. She never told him how she felt until right before he died after he revealed that he had been in love with her for years, but he was too afraid to tell her. Cole moved to Utah during that time frame and has only been Emmy's friend up until now. He is helping her train for her rematch against Whitney. She feels more than a little guilty about her feelings for Cole, but she cautiously begins to deal with the past and the present until the moment that everything changes. This was a quick easy read. It had me in tears several times, and I enjoyed the book and it's message a lot.

Sky Pony Press is starting to be my go-to publisher for young adult books. Their newest addition, SWITCHING GEARS, a follow up to LOVE, LUCAS by Chantele Sedgwick, is a wonderful example of what I think makes a great young adult romance. The writing is easy-flowing and never bogs down, the action is exciting and plentiful, and the lead characters have realistic flaws and grow throughout the story. And, of course, the heroine gets her HEA.Seventeen-year-old Emmy Martin loves mountain biking. It's what makes her feel alive. As the story begins, she still mourns the death of her best friend, neighbor, and secret love Lucas, who died from cancer the month before. She strains to finish a race in first place but is passed by her nemesis, Whitney. Irritated at always coming in behind Whitney, she asks for a rematch. A cocky Cole offers to help her train, but Emmy chooses to do it by herself. She's afraid to get close to too many people, since she fears they might leave her. So she keeps only Kelsie as her friend and confidant.Kelsie is Emmy's best friend and an exceptional one, too. She refuses to let Emmy wallow in her sadness, constantly pushing and prodding her to get out and enjoy life. She makes Emmy laugh, and she encourages her to give Cole a chance. She is perfect BFF material. And then there's Cole. Hot, cocky and a mountain bike racing fiend. Emmy doesn't like him at first, especially after he's named captain of their school's mountain biking team, the one she started the previous summer. She's wary of him when he offers to train her for the rematch with Whitney. So Emmy turns him down. He continues to try and help her and eventually asks her out. He's supportive, treats her well and likes to tease her. But most of all, he cares enough to challenge Emmy to be her very best. The story includes issues of abandonment, grief, self-doubt, guilt, and believing in yourself. It has funny parts mixed in with some sad passages, but it's a wonderful story overall. The only con is that it ended too soon. (I would have liked to see the last chapter expanded to include some of what happened through the year before the Epilogue occurs.) So I'm giving the book a strong 4.5 stars.SWITCHING GEARS is a sweet romance that should appeal to younger teenagers, but older teenagers and adults will enjoy the story too. And it's a book you'll want to keep on your shelf to revisit from time to time.If You Like This, You May Like: LOVE, LUCAS and NOT YOUR AVERAGE FAIRY TALE by Chantele Sedgwick, LIFE BEFORE by Michele Bacon, THAT BURNING SUMMER by Lydia Syson, BY YOUR SIDE by Kasie West, FIRST YEAR by Sarah Hocut, STOLEN KISSES by Kerttu-Liis Kiili, SAINT ANYTHING and JUST LISTEN by Sarah Dessen* Read my other reviews on the Blue Moon Mystery Saloon blog.** An e-galley was provided by Sky Pony Press and Edelweiss for an honest review.
