I learned a few things - her thoughts on the rainbow really made an impression upon me, for example. Her biblical explanations satisfied my basic desire to know how God walked her through the process. She engaged my emotions, as a good book should.In a heartbeat I would recommend this book to any person at any increment on the denial to advocacy scale of human sexuality. Education through personal stories is more relatable than statistical data alone. The bottom line is: get to know PEOPLE.
I purchased this book after discovering the free mom hugs group. I became interested in this topic when my 14 year old daughter's friend came out to her mother and her mother is having a terrible time with it. It really helped me and my daughter to see it from the mother's perspective and maybe understand what she's going through even if we do not agree with her. WONDERFUL book, would recommend everyone read this no matter which side you might be on!
Sara Cunningham's book, which I was thrilled to have her sign my copy, shares her poignantly moving journey of initial heartache, then the purest love, after her son came out as gay. Sara's Christian faith was not shattered, but abundantly strengthened during her family's experience into the unchartered life of being a parent of a LGBTQ child, a child who is a gift from God. Sara's transparency is profound and tugs passionately on the old mommy heartstrings. Thank you for sharing your heart, Sara.
This book is full of honest emotions. The author experienced the full spectrum of emotions during her journey to except her son as he is. I hope this book finds it's way into the lives of other parents and family members who are questioning their own reactions to the coming out of a loved one, that they will understand and except their child as a perfect gift from God.
Speechless. Quick easy read that you cannot put down after you start. Told with such authenticity, raw intimate honest, and most of all, love. This is a book about the courage to look inward and allow love to win, heal and transform, plain and simple. The feelings it stirred inside me are intense to say the least. There is no way I am not a better person after reading this, and my bond to God just grew more secure.
Very well written and easy to read. You will laugh and you will cry. Sarah opens up about her personal struggles dealing with her bible belt 'church values' and acceptance that her son is gay. I recommend this book to anyone who has a relative or friend that is gay and is having trouble accepting their homosexuality. I commend Sarah for her bravery in sharing her personal journey of learning to accept her son's homosexuality and sharing a mother's love story. God bless you Sarah and family!
I am so happy for Sara and her family. They have grown together. I cried through most of the book. Partly because I went through some of the same things (being a gay man), and partly because of the touching stories they went through. I work in the same building as the author. She knows I am gay and has always been the nicest person to my husband and me. I will be buying this for my mother to read as she has gone through some of the same struggles. Great book.
I've searched for ways to bridge the gap between my devout parents and myself. I never stopped to consider the turmoil they have endured in dealing with the reality of having a gay son. Take the time to read this book and perhaps gain insight into something not considered.
