I love this genre of "pop memoirs"! Fact-based books that also make you chuckle ... biographies that feel relatable ... memoirs that are written with wit. Alexander Hamilton's Guide to Life, also by Jeff Wilser, was a delight in all of these ways. The Book of Joe delivers the same winning combination. A very enjoyable read! Also, I learned more than I expected to. To be honest, I was surprised at how much of Biden's story I didn't know. I consider myself pretty well-informed, but still had missed certain parts of his story in the press coverage of his over the years. The stories Wilser relays are great - some were really funny and two made me cry. And, I got the sense that Biden has grown through the years, sometimes in public ways, and that was interesting to think about. It's a wonderful, affirming read!

I purchased this based on the strength of Wilser's "Alexander Hamilton's Guide to Life," and I was not disappointed (if you haven't bought/read the Hamilton book, you should go do that now). I knew little about Biden prior to reading "The Book of Joe," and now he's legitimately one of the public figures I most admire. This book will make you laugh, move you to tears, and then inspire to live your best life, oftentimes in the same chapter. Often books about political figures can be hard to get through as they get bogged down in details, but that's not the case here. The complicated Supreme Court confirmation process Biden managed is brought to life in dramatic detail, and Wilser's style encourages you to keep reading even when the subject matter is a heart-breaking accident. Give this a read to discover just why Biden was beloved on both sides of the aisle, or to remind yourself that there are still some politicians left worthy of your admiration.

I was a Biden fan before reading this book, and am even more of one now. I wish he had run in 2016 and hope he does in 2020. He is one of the few politicians around who cares about people and who understands how negotiations work. The respect he has earned from both sides of the aisle is a pretty strong indication that he knows how to bridge the divisions and end the polarization that has afflicted us for so long now.

Wonderful account of how Joe Biden was elected to the Senate. The tragic loss of his beloved wife and child. Most importantly, we learn how he looks at life. His total commitment to honesty and integrity. A rare quality in today's world. Great read. This man would be a great president.

I read quite a lot and found this to be the best book I've read in a long time. Full of history that I wasn't aware of (or had forgotten...), humor, pathos, and inspiration. Joe Biden seems to be unique amongst Washington politicians-- Clearly a Democrat but able and happy to work across the aisle to do what's RIGHT. He has and continues to serve his country and his beliefs, not himself. And that is an unfortunate rarity today. I simply loved this telling of his story!

I do not watch television or the news. I’m a Hulu watcher mainly General Hospital and Gray’s anatomy. News focuses on all the negative and not the good things people do.I bought this book for my 28 year old son for Christmas. He lives in DC and wanted to go see Joe Biden speak. Venue was not selling tickets of one so he missed out. Instead I bought him two kindle books on Biden. My son hasn’t read the book but my mom logged into our kindle account and loved the book; so I decided to read it.Now I am another Joe Biden admirer. I’m trying to instill in my adult sons, “You ain’t no better than anybody else. Nobody is better than you, but you ain’t no better than anybody else.” I loved that his mother told Joe that.

Oh Joe, I didn't know anything about you, but now I love ya. Good ole Joey B is one class act guy. This book steps you through the whole story of Joe, good and bad. A must have for anyone wanting to learn more about America's all-time favorite VP. I plan to buy some more just to gift to friends.

An fun, interesting read. I very much admire this VP/Senator who cares about people

I recently received the book above as a free book to review. The Book of No Worries was written by Lizzie Cox who was the former editor of popular teen brand Sugarscape.com.I saw that this book was designed for kids ten and up. I therefore thought I'd be the perfect mom to review it as I have a nine and ten-year-old boy in my house. (I also have younger girls but they are five and seven so I knew this wouldn't be for them.)Folks, I have never been so appalled by a book in my life. I understand that we need to talk to our kids about tough things.Listen, I don't want to start a raging war here, but this is simply NOT okay, and if you are a parent of a young child, you need be aware that literature like this exists. If this book was targeted toward fifteen and sixteen years old, I would actually not have nearly the issues with it. They have been exposed to things and are creating their own thoughts. But to throw things like this at a ten-year-old? it's not only inappropriate but it is wrong to step in right in front of a parent and tell their child things that some people in society preach but MANY families do not believe in.For example:I teach my children that abortion is WRONG. You may not agree with that, but we believe it is wrong. But this books says "hey if you had sex, quickly go to another adult -- not your parent --and they can get you help in making sure that baby doesn't stick around."While I understand that transgender is a fact of our society, I do not believe that confusing a child who has expressed NO issues with their sex with the fact that maybe they do have an issue is simply so overboard. Why can't a kid be a kid? Are we seriously needing to tell them about this at TEN?!Honestly, I could go on and on, but I will just let the pictures above speak for themselves. Please understand me, I get that there are things going on in society. I get that we need to be there for our kids and they might end up growing up differently than we did. But that doesn't mean that parents want their young children doused in this from such a young age.The woman who wrote this is not a doctor. She is a journalist. She is sharing things that are absolutely her opinion and are clearly meant to brainwash children into thinking like she does.My kids are farm kids. They probably understand sex better than most kids their age simply because they watch it on the farm all the time. My nine-year-old asks more questions than you can believe. But these are things that are NOT on their mind yet.And this is NOT because I homeschool. I have plenty of friends with kids in public and private schools that concur with this sentiment. We are dousing our kids in sexuality way too early.LET THEM BE LITTLE!!!!!

This book is an excellent resource for tweens who are experiencing the normal roller coaster of growing up. With chapter headings including School, Mental Health, Friends, Appearance, Emotional Well-being and more, tweens will be easily able to focus on an area of concern. Especially helpful are the q and a sections and those in which a young person directly speaks to the reader about an issue that was faced. The author conveys that all worries can and should be talked about, not held inside. She normalizes many concerns and offers ways to cope. Most importantly, she offers hope that things can get better.Give this book to a young person that you care about. Encourage your school or community library to add this volume to the shelves. A tween may not thank you directly but I do think that they will appreciate having this resource. Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto for this egalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

#462,546 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is an extremely well written book that relentlessly and completely gives the lie to the oft-spoken idea that large sporting events like the Olympics and World Cup are economic gold mines for host cities or countries. Simply put, they aren't. But it's worse than that. Andrew Zimbalist uses facts, pertinent economic explanations, humor and irony to explain how host cities are nearly all left with economic disasters after the Olympics and World Cup leave town, taking most of the financial gain with them. The book showcases the sometimes insane euphoria, and big cash, that goes into bidding for world class sporting events with promises of increased tourism during the games that extends after the games, increased cache and economic preimenance that go along with hosting such events.Zimbalist does a fantastic job of explaining that the Olympic Games don't even bring more tourists to a city while they are happening, let alone for years afterward. London actually had fewer tourists in the Summer of 2012. As for the supposed cache attached to host cities, this book explains it can all go bad if there is a terrorist attack, protests, or, as in Brazil, deaths associated with the construction of venues. And the book showcases how the 'legacy' of hosting these events can often turn into a public relations nightmare when, like Athens and Beijing there are rotting stadiums that scar the landscape, or, like Sochi, you leave an impression of an infrastructure mess. And for those cities who eagerly jump at the chance for a bid, they often cite the 1984 Olympic Games in LA (which turned a modest profit) and the 1992 Barcelona Games, (which excellerated that city's rise as a city of consequence), Zimbalist clearly why those two cities are singular events, not easily reproduced.I love the Olympics. This book tells another side of the story beyond the athletic drama of the games. After reading this book, I hope my city never even bids for an Olympics.

Through the use of extensive facts and data Zimbalist makes the case that the Olympic committees and promoters are only concerned with their own profit and power. Everyone in Massachusetts who will vote on soliciting the forthcoming Olympic bid should read this book. If history is a guide it will be your tax dollars making up the cost overruns despite the promises that not a single tax dollar will be used.I feel sorry for the people of Brazil. The book details the heavy price they paid for hosting the 2014 World Cup games. Now they are on the path for another costly venture with the upcoming Olympics. Journalists are reporting problems unfolding just as Zimbalist cited in this book.

This is a very interesting book. It concerns the gamble that's taken by governments with the World Cup and the Olympic Games. It took Montreal thirty years before it paid off its debt from the Olympics. They aren't an investment but should rather be seen more as an expenditure for public approval. After all everybody loves a party until the bill arrives.

Liked the book, living in Boston it helped open my eyes to how bad hosting the Olympics can be, even on a good day. It had some significant sections that seemed to repeat. At some level it seemed like a solid long-form article for The Atlantic that got stretched into a book. But I still tell everyone I know to read it. Boston 2024 will be a giant sink hole for money, not unlike the Big Dig.

Mr. Zimbalist gives you an economist's perspective without getting so wonky you can't see straight. It's incredible what goes into building these mega events and, that's before they turn the first shovel. It's awful and compelling to consider everything that goes into these events. I'm one who thinks the Olympics are cost too much to host. And I tune in every time.

This book gave me great insight into the Olympic games as well as other large sporting events. The amount of planning and spending that occurs is really eye opening. This book sheds a lot of light on the problems with the Olympics and the amount of money countries waste with little to show afterwards. Very interesting.

Professor Zimbalist has once again managed to write a book about a fascinating and extremely complex topic in a way that reads easily and excitingly - even for the casual sports fan (or tax payer) without an advanced degree in economics. I highly recommend this book for any Bostonian (or citizen of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts) who found him/herself excited about the recent announcement that Boston is the USOC's pick as host city candidate for the 2024 Olympics.Professor Zimbalist lays out all the pros and cons of hosting the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup, and even the most ardent sports fan will have to concede that at a minimum the money to host such a mega event would be better spent on infrastructure and programming to benefit the local citizens well into the future.

All over the world, countries and cities think that hosting mega sporting events like the Olympics or World Cup would be an economic panacea. As this excellent book shows, this is not correct. Occasionally, these events produce an economic benefit for the host location; most often they do economic harm. Written for the non-specialist reader, the book reviews the reasons why this is the case as well as presenting fascinating case studies of such economic fiascos as Russia's Winter Olympics in Sochi or Brazil's recent World Cup. It also presents some best practices that cities would be well advised to follow. In particular, the book should be read by citizens of Boston, which is competing for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Wonderful book.
