I have long been a fan of Stephen Leather and his latest book hasn't failed my expectations. Jack Nightingale continues to deal delightfully with demons and devils. However, in this book, there are new unexpected changes. The demon Prosephone, evil as she is, continues to surprise us as she still plays a part, a big part in Jack Nightingale's career. I recommend this book if you like tales of demonology

Jack Nightingale is faced with a job for Joshua Wainwright that quickly becomes personal for them both. A decent read but the details of the summoning rituals has become somewhat boring. Perhaps eight novels is enough. Jack is interesting but growing less so. Take him back to London and go into business with Mrs Steadman.

I was let down by the ending. The rest was very involved and then the ending was quick and final .. I was disappointed with it. But I'm a fan and will certainly read the next one.

Awesome bringing together of many threads in the Nightingale universe. I çant wait to see what the future holds for the hero!

Stephen Leather is a great writer - his Jack Nightingale series is awesome. You start reading and you can't stop until you've finished book. Please continue with this series.

This book checked all the boxes for me. Fast paced horror and no over-thinking the plot. If you like the other Jack Nightingale stories you shouldn’t be disappointed with this installment.

Good book, but not as good as some of the earlier Jack Nightingale books

I have enjoyed reading the books in this series and will continue to read any new books in the series.

Terrible book. I can’t believe I had to buy this for a class. I’m not sure who I should be more angry with the person that wrote it, the person that thought it would be a good idea to publish it, or my instructor for deciding he should teach from it (even though he admits that he doesn’t like it either and wants to fInd an alternative). Many of the problems at the end of the chapters aren’t even relevant to what you read about in the chapters. Many of the chapters have the same exact questions.Th authors try to over simply topics from clasical physics on wave mechanics and propagation to the extent that he’d be better off plagiarizing a high school physics book because there is very little explanation of what is being discussed but you have these formulas discussed in the chapters and there are virtually no usable example problems. I mean it’s confounding that a book like this is published and we have to pay this much money for a poorly written piece of garbage. Anyone reading this review that is buying this book because it’s required should raise hell with their department chairs.

This book is a beast, its definably not for the average IT major, more of the cable guy or electric engineer!!

It is usefull to use for the class, but sometime I find it too theoretic.By the way, It's not easy to get the instructor's materials from Stallings' website.

Didn't actually read it, just was required for class. Book goes into a ton of detail, not sure how much is relevant

This is a paperback. Its almost exactly what the teacher ordered, but weirdly the practice questions are not the same as the teacher's hard cover book. The rest of the content matches though.

Stallings has been a great writer on many communications topics but this book falls far by the wayside. As a personal note, he and I graduated with PhDs from MIT the same time and the same Course, but I did not know him. I have used his previous books with great success to get up to speed in many areas. This one, however, is way off the mark. First this is almost a rewrite at best of the 2nd Edition. It fails to discuss 3G and has barely a mention of 4G. Given the dominance of wireless Internet/IP access I would have expected some detailed discussion at the very least. Second, and this is a significant drawback, and a Publisher problem, this is a paperback edition and the pages are so flimsy as to be unusable. The print is almost unreadable. Thus, between the failure to come up to date and the poor quality of production, I would strongly suggest seeking alternatives, even the 2nd Edition. It is a shame, since Stallings has produced many gems in the past.

Content-wise, it is full of information and it provides helpful informative diagrams. The writing style is very technical and to the point. The end of chapter questions are split into two groups, review questions (to recall what was read) and problem questions (to use analytical thinking). Physically, the book cover and pages are very thin, making it a reasonably compact book to carry.

Don't buy this book if you can help yourself. The beginning part of this message was written on 9/10/2016. I'll keep updating this interview if necessary. This book has really pissed me off. There is a giant mistake just in the beginning of the book:On page 15, it says that "There is a direct relationship between the information-carrying capacity of a signal and its bandwidth: The greater the band width, the higher the information-carrying capacity." Then it gives three examples to show the relationship. What is ridiculous is, in all the three cases (Cases I, II, and III, pages 15-17), the information-carrying capacity totally has nothing to do with the bandwidth, but only depends on the fundamental frequency (f) of the carrier wave. How can an author make such a basic, serious mistake is beyond me.Furthermore, it doesn't explain why the frequencies of the harmonics have to be the odd multiples of the fundamental frequency (f). -- I know why, but many other students don't, and the professor didn't explain it either even a student asked. She just said, "To make it a square wave, the frequencies of the harmonics have to be the odd multiples of the fundamental frequency (f)." And she didn't say "why." I wanted to explain, but I just didn't want to "show off."Anyway, it's not a good book. I had to get it only because it was required for my class.Today (9/15/2016) I found more mistakes in the book. On pages 95-97, about the ground wave, sky wave, and line-of-sight wave, the text says they are of "up to about 3 MHz," "3-30 MHz," and "above 30 MHz" respectively, while the numbers on Figure 5.1 says "below 2 MHz," "2-30 MHz," and "above 30 MHz."Also today (9/15/2016), Example 5.1 on page 101, in the text the satellite is 35,863 km from earth, but in calculation, the number becomes 35.853×1000,000 -- You see? The last three digits of the two are not the same: one is "863," and the other "853."How can a person make so many mistakes in a textbook? And this is just the beginning. The book is trash.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Giroux is an author of many books and articles on education, politics, and corporate influence. This highly critical examination of the Disney corporation explores the scope of influence that Disney has over the developing minds (and bodies) of children as it uses the facade of innocence and nostalgia marketing to promote consumerism over values such as reading and creative play, which are known to stimulate intelligence and social interaction better than the passive viewing of television and movies. Giroux asks us to reevaluate the seemingly innocuous animated Disney productions and theme parks, which focus on a safe, sanitized, middle-class white depiction of the American ideal, while promoting racial and sexual stereotypes in films such as Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. He points out the hypocrisy (or is it irony?) of the feature WALL-E, which depicts Earth as a desolate wasteland despoiled by rampant consumerism and an overreaching mega-corporation, while at the same time promoting WALL-E robots, action figures, playsets, apparel, stationery, and other “collectibles” in the real world. This updated and expanded edition (with the help of coauthor Pollock) includes a discussion on Disney's focus on marketing toward the lucrative “tween” segment, as well as two new chapters, “Globalizing the Disney Empire” and “Disney, Militarization, and the National Security State after 9/11.” Well researched and well written, despite the academic jargon. --David Siegfried

Review

Henry A. Giroux and Grace Pollock's revised and expanded edition of The Mouse That Roared: Disney and the End of Innocence presents tools, key concepts and analyses, and the context to provide a critical pedagogy of all things Disney. The author's dissection of the Disney Empire shows that it is not only selling entertainment and related products but a way of life and value system that the authors critically unpack. This is a valuable resource for all parents, teachers, and those interested in cultural studies of contemporary culture. (Douglas Kellner, UCLA; author of Media Culture and Media Spectacle and the Crisis of Democracy)The Mouse That Roared: Disney And The End of Innocence by Henry A. Giroux and Grace Pollock sets a new standard for the study of Disney and popular culture. It offers new lens to understand the merger between corporate power and corporate culture while unveiling the insidious educational force of pre-packaged culture. This brilliant book should be read by every parent, educator, and youth. (Donaldo Macedo, University of Massachusetts, Boston)Disney productions carry important cultural authority but until now we have lacked sure-footed guides to unpack the consequences when Disney products get embedded in everyday play, learning, and growing up. Now Henry Giroux and Grace Pollock in their revised and expanded edition of Giroux's pioneering study give us the tools with which to talk back to Disney's world. These tools are especially welcome because other ways of talking back to consumer culture have been relentlessly closed down by neoliberals. This book offers a crucial intervention in cultural politics for any place where Disney products sell. (Nick Couldry, London School of Economics and Political Science)Giroux is an author of many books and articles on education, politics, and corporate influence. If you love Mickey and Donald, you might be miffed at Giroux's critique of the Disney Empire. Athough careful not to characterize it as the 'evil empire', he does an excellent job of framing the megla-conglomerate as a pervasive propaganda machine for its own views on 'values'. The book moves very quickly and is intensely interesting with facts, figures and expositions of Disney antics in turning our children into consumers. If you are a Giroux reader, then you'll recognize his style and his message, which is wrapped in the Freirian philosophy of democractic dialectic. He is warning us against the pervasiveness of the Disney message which excludes dialogue and portrys realities as clean and efficient, and all problems solvable within the lily white world of heroes and heroines. There are some flaws. He mentions the number of Disney stores three times and each time he gives a different number. He also changes the numbers on Disney's gross and net income a few times. After you've reached the fourth chapter, you'll begin to feel that each chapter is a separate essay written months apart. I strongly recommend it if you're a way-far liberal in the pre-Clinton sense of the word.

I have the first edition and find the updated one valuable. Henry Giroux is one of the scholars whose work has inspired mine for many years. The text explores the power Disney holds in terms of reinforcing hegemony and includes insightful readings of popular films, such as Pretty Woman which offer insights other semiotic studies have not touched on. Giroux addresses the larger context of how what parades as innocent entertainment is actually political and has consequences for all our institutions and, by extension, personal consequences. The author has inspired many of my students!

everyone should read this man. excellent, recommended reading

The Mouse that Roared was a required reading for me, but it was quite enlightening. Disney truly is more than just a return to innocence and light, as the machine would have us believe. Anyone who has ever watched a Disney video or visited Disney amusement parks--and those who want to-- should read this book. I've recommended it to friends and family.

Very interesting book and good read. Definitely makes you second-guess Disney resorts, and as a company at whole. Had to buy it for a college class a few years ago, and am glad it was a required read as I'm not sure I would have heard about it otherwise.

I got this book after seeing Giroux on an episode of Bill Moyer's program. It was a real eye-opener. However, his writing is so abstruse that the message nearly gets lost.

very interesting insight. It got a lot of conversation going in my class, and outside of class. It is very biased though, so if you love disney than watch-out. It is not sugar-coating the industry.

Good analysis. A little dry in spots. Doesn't focus on case-by-case results of Disney's subversive messages. Gets a little too much into the history. A good primer for general knowledge of Disney's intentions.
