It is a comprehensive book. Salibi was a great Historian.

Salibi writes with his usual lucid and detailed style making this book a pleasure to read. Despite his attempts at objectivity, the book was careful, in fact too careful, to insult the sensibilites of some parties. Salibi attempeted to trudge his way through the sensitivity of many historical controversaies in an attempt to be fair to all parties concerned. FOr those expecting a critical account of history, do not expect much. However, if you are merely looking for a interesting history of modern Jordan, this is your book especially in relation to the minor details many historians overlook in the process of grand theorisation.

Jordan-that country conjured out of sand and hills by Winston Churchill at the Cairo conference in March 1921--has always had a question mark over its existence. For the first thirty years, King 'Abdullah tried to trade Amman, his backwater capital, for Damascus or Jerusalem. King Husayn struggled during four decades to fend off many predators, including Gamal Abdel Nasser and the PLO. As recently as July 1994, he stated that Jordan "is susceptible to fragmentation." Salibi, professor of history at the American University of Beirut, provides an excellent basis for grappling with these fundamental questions about the Jordanian polity. In two of the book's most important chapters, he chronicles the Hashemite dynasty which produced the kings of Jordan and tells the history of the territory that Churchill would eventually make into Jordan. Particularly important for today's Jordan-is-Palestine advocates to note, Salibi shows that the British did not control Transjordan during the eight critical months between the French conquest of Damascus in July 1920 and the Cairo Conference. The sections dealing with more recent history provide a competent and useful account of political developments, but they do not provide new perspectives; more surprisingly, they have nothing to say about the culture and economy of modern Jordan, a major lapse.Middle East Quarterly, September 1994

The Modern History of Jordan is perhaps the one and only source about the history of this country ever since it was formed under the leadership of Hashemite King Abdullah I.Like all of his works, Salibi traces with his meticulous eye and encyclopedic knowledge the story of this country since antiquity even though according to Salibi, the most important part in the formation of Jordan came recently when France and Britain divided the region into their spheres of influence after the conclusion of WWI in 1919.Salibi's style is particularly entertaining and flows in a scientific and intriguing manner. The book is money well-spent and fits in the libraries of both history experts as well as average readers.

I read this book as preparatory material for a study abroad program in Jordan, and was initially pleased with how informative it is. While it is informative as a general history, the real purpose of this book is to be an apology for the Hashemites. When Salibi isn't actively seeking to bolster the image of Hussein and the Hashemites in general, he is downplaying the significance of internal struggle and strife within Jordan. For example, compare accounts of the 1960s in Jordan in Salibi to other account. What Salibi describes as minor domestic troubles are described in other accounts as the Hashemites nearly being overthrown. He also, to my mind, shamefully neglects the full scope of the Palestinian issue as it has played out in Jordanian politics and identity-formation. His treatment of Black September discounts the Palestinian perspective while attempting to say the Hashemite's brutal repression really wasn't all that bad.I have had "A History of Jordan" by Philip Robins highly recommended to me, however I have not read it. It is likely to be a more objective account of the history of Jordan. If you do choose to read The Modern History of Jordan do so with a critical eye towards the goals of Salibi, which appears to be proselytizing for the Hashemites. It is also important that you supplement your reading on Jordan with other books, such as Joseph Massad's extraordinary "Colonial Effects" and Marc Lynch's "State Interests and Public Spheres"While I certainly don't want to resort to ad hominom attacks on Kamal Salibi, I do question the rigor of his scholarship given the apologetic nature of "The Modern History of Jordan" and his controversial and discounted theory that historical Israel was in fact Yemen. He appears to be a scholar with an agenda, and it shines through very clearly in his work.

Where Is the Colosseum?     It is AD 80 and the streets of Rome are buzzing with excitement. The new emperor has promised one hundred days of games to celebrate the opening of an amphitheater that stands in the center of the city.    It is named the Flavian Amphitheater after the emperor’s family and is a marvel of engineering. It is huge, over 150 feet high, and will seat fifty thousand people. There are eighty entrances that quickly funnel spectators to their correct seats. There are snack bars, many water fountains, and even indoor bathrooms.   A massive canopy stretches over the open-air arena and provides shade for the crowd. It is operated by a team of one thousand sailors who can haul the canvas cloth canopy—a huge fabric roof—into position and adjust it as needed.   Today’s show begins with battles between men and wild animals. The animals—lions, tigers, bears, and elephants—have been brought from every corner of the Roman Empire. In the next hundred days, more than nine thousand animals will be slaughtered.    Later, at lunchtime, prisoners will be brought from jail to be torn apart by some of the animals or killed by soldiers. Although it is hard for us to understand, the crowds find this entertaining. The people of ancient Rome devoured this sort of spectacle—the bloodier the better.   The high point of the day comes in the afternoon—pairs of fighters called gladiators will fight each other with deadly weapons. People in the crowd root for whichever gladiator they want to win. They scream and cheer. Again, it is hard for us today to think of people killing each other as entertainment. But to the Romans, it was.   The grand opening of this huge arena marks a climax in the history of ancient Rome. The amphitheater is the largest ever built. Soon it will come to be called the Colosseum. Today, two thousand years later, it is a ruin. Yet it is still one of the most famous sites in all of Rome, in all of Italy. More than five million people visit every year to see a reminder of the bloody power of one of the world’s greatest empires.     Chapter 1: How Rome Began     By the time the Colosseum opened, the city of Rome was almost eight hundred years old.   According to legend, Rome was founded in 753 BC by Romulus. Romulus and his twin brother, Remus, were the children of a human woman and Mars, the Roman god of war. Their mother, Rhea, left her twins to die in the Tiber River. But the twins floated down the river and were saved by a she-wolf. The wolf took care of the babies in a nearby area with seven hills.   According to one legend, when they grew up, the twins wanted to build a city on one of the seven hills. But they could not agree on which hill. Neither twin would give in and there was a terrible fight. Romulus killed Remus.   Romulus built his city exactly where he wanted and named it Rome, after himself. The people who lived there came to be called Romans.   Over the next three hundred years, Rome grew so large that it covered all seven hills. It grew up along the banks of the shallow Tiber River.   Around 400 BC, Rome founded Ostia, a harbor city on the coast. From there Roman ships could sail to all the trading centers on the Mediterranean Sea. The Romans grew rich.    By 218 BC, Rome had conquered all of what is now the country of Italy. By AD 117, the Roman Empire stretched from Britain in the north through most of Europe and included all the land around the Mediterranean Sea. Countries that are today known as Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Saudi Arabia were all part of the Roman Empire. The Romans brought their way of life to these conquered lands.   After every conquest, the victorious Roman general would return home and parade through the city, showing off the riches he’d taken as well as the many prisoners of war. The riches from conquered lands paid for massive building projects like the Colosseum.

Very good. Also includes some information on other aspects of Roman life besides just the uses of the Colosseum. Wish the author had given more details about the Colosseum itself - especially the system of pulleys and underground chambers.

#296,874 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The only thing good I can say about this cookbook is that it contains recipes. The writing and edting, or should I say lack of editing, is atrocious. I looked at five recipes that I thought I might be interested in. Each one was missing words in one of more steps. Sometimes they weren't crucial to completing the recipe, but sometimes they were. I purchased this to save some time since my foray in to Instant Pot cooking first lead me to searching online for recipes...definitely not time saving. Very disappointed. Would not recommend.

If you want a basic cookbook that reads like a poorly written children's book, you’ve found it. It has so many errors that I have to believe it’s self published, with no thought to pay for editorial services. It honestly feels like it was written by someone in elementary school, or an ESL person. I have no trust in the recipes as they are missing steps, and incomplete sentences. Kindle version might be worth it at $2.99, but not the paperback. I gave this book two stars, as the book deserves a star for at least having recipes in it.I will be refunding this book purchase, and not buying anything that Beverly Jones releases in the future.

Instructions for the Instant pot are well defined and easy to follow. The revipes are barely mediocre. Many ingredients I've never heard of and Bo mention of substitutes. Unusual recipes, but no basic ones such as Chicken soup from scratch, beef pot roast, spaghetti sauce, beef barley soup, etc. Not many American common dishes.

I am a beginner in cooking with the Instant Pot so I was hoping for some exciting recipes and tips on using the Instant Pot. I won't go so far as to express complete disappointment in the book but I was truly hoping for better.

My niece and newphew received an iPot for Christmas. The recipes were essential to using the pot. They send out pictures of the recipe and the finished dinner on Instagram"

Not worth the money.

This cook book doesn’t have very many recipes for beef, poultry, pork ect. They all have other items with them no recipes with the meat by it self. Sending back

Fairly good book for beginners of Instapot cooking. Some of the recipes used a lot of specialty ingredients that most people would have to purchase and might never use again.
