About the Author

Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749-1817) was a mineralogist and geologist at the mining school in Freiberg, Saxony. In his 1774 book On the External Characteristics of Fossils, he established a classification system to describe the colors of both fossils and minerals. Patrick Syme (1774-1845), an Edinburgh painter and art teacher, reconstructed Werner's colors by consulting actual minerals, paired the hues with examples from plant and animal life, and created the system of color swatches and descriptions that form the basis of this book.

Having held a copy of an original Syme's 1821 in Kansas City many years ago I was excited to have a copy in my office. And since it was Smithsonian I was doubly excited since I figured it would be really nice. The color swatches in the book are dull approximations of the original. This is particularly evident on the blues page where Verditter, Greenish & Grayish blue are so close as to appear the same. I thought perhaps I was romanticising my memory so I sought out a comparison.Attached are screenshots from the Linda Hall Archive (where I first saw the original) and a photo from the Smithsonian reproduction. There is a world of difference with the Smithsonian colors all having a muted grayish cast. So sad. And odd: with the improvement of printing technology there's no reason this can't be spot-on.If you want this for the descriptive language and historical aspects buy it. If you want to see the magnificence of Sym's original tints go online.

This beautiful little book is much better than most of the historic reproductions in my collection. It comes with a very well manufactured hard cover. and a ribbon bookmark. I enjoyed reading the descriptions of the mineral, animal, and plant specimens that typify the colors. I can't really use this book today for the same purpose that Charles Darwin did in his day, but if we recognize that we are treated to a rare look at a two-century old color book in near perfect condition, the muting of colors by time can be forgiven. As an artist and professional naturalist myself, I found myself making mental comparisons of the color swatches and found many wanting. The whites are now all shades of tan. Veinous blood red is presented here as black, and Sulphur yellow is far too green. As much as we might wish for the original vibrancy of the colors to show through, two hundred years have passed since the original colors were mixed with a carrier and applied to paper. Its a rare artwork that stays true to its original colors for that long, because organic pigments fade and both oil mediums and paper discolor. Knowing all this, I'd still buy it over for the pleasure of an evening reading.

I bought this book after seeing the beautiful hues online. However, the colors in the book look as though every square was gone over with a wash of grey. Look at the "snow-white"!. I am disappointed with this book and the colors.

Oh my goodness!!!!..This is an exquisite reproduction of what must have been amazing notebooks and journals... Its a look into the past with lyrical AND acurate descriptions of the colors around us.. Its not necessarily a reference book for people searching for that “certain shade of blue”....but more an inspirational tome and a dive into Darwins ( and other explorers) efforts to describe the world around them. SPECTACULAR BINDING!

It's lovely. It is not a reference type book with authoritative color representation, but it's quite charming and historic.

how lucky we are the smithsonian rescued this book and reproduced it. your inner poet is going to love it. i bought two copies. one to keep for my own inner poet and another to give to my sister who thrives on color. we both thrive on historical artifacts and this book has it in spades. yes, the book took some time to get here because i suspect the publisher wasn't prepared for the mad rush when everyone started sharing a link to the book on facebook. i know six other people who ordered the book the same day i ordered two copies. i suspect it will sell out.

I did not know this existed until someone mentioned that they were publishing this work. It's an interesting journal. I've been using it to improve how I describe color when I write creatively. I'm completely I'm love with it.

Beautiful historic book that is the same as the one used by Darwin on the HMS Beagle to guide him in color identification.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.Noah, Tyler, Jacob and Cole have fitted Eve with bracers and a collar to control her powers. So far, she's been powerless, so they seem to be working. As a paranormal detective, Eve never expected her life to turn out like this. Half Fae, half demon, searching for the Dark Rider that haunts her. She was content chasing the bad guys and keeping the para's in line, until the day Noah, Tyler, Jacob and Cole entered her life and became her protectors. Her protectors were sent by Queen Cassina to find Eve and bring her to their Realm. Obviously things didn't go as planned. Now Eve and her protectors are on a mission of their own. They are fighting for their lives. Eve's powers have gotten her into a lot of trouble and she finds herself answering for her actions. That's when she's introduced to Kaelen Lightwing - King of the Solarian Court and Emperor of the Fae Realm. Kaelen takes a liking to Eve.Eve is of the utmost importance to her guardians, but she's become important to Kaelen also. Cassina just wants her gone. Soon King Kaelen, Queen Cassina and her protectors will realize the true power Eve possesses.A WILD ADVENTURE THAT NOT ONLY TAKES YOU TO DIFFERENT REALMS, BUT ALSO THROUGHOUT HISTORY ! AN ORIGINAL ADVENTURE WITH A MULTITUDE OF LESSONS WITH DEEPER MEANINGS ! ELIZABETH HELD NOTHING BACK IN BOOK 3 ! THE ABSOLUTE, PERFECT ENDING TO THIS AMAZING SERIES !

This is the final story in this series and what an amazing end this this adventure by Eve and her four guardians, Noah, Cole, Tyler and Jacob. Eve has been given bracers to wear to control her powers as she has not fully learned how to use them only for good as the evilness seems to cause destruction. They are trying to stay away from Queen Cassina who is out to end Eve for her four guardians should be loyal to her. Once they reach the King of Solarian and Emperor of the Fae Realm, Kaelen Lightwing do things get a bit more complicated. Eve is separated from her guardians and is having to deal with Kaelen and what he wants from her. With the bonding Eve and the guys have a need to be with one another and Kaelen tries to keep them apart. I loved the way the guys find ways to see Eve and they all get what the need from one another. When Kaelen shows Eve the reasons why he needs her she believes in being able to help and to use her powers for good but with the evilness of the Dark Rider and Queen Cassina they have a battle on their hands. When Eve’s true powers are realized her guardians do what is necessary to protect her at all cost! I enjoyed how Kaelen is on his way to being with the one who makes him feel love! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "GUARDIANS OF MOONLIGHT" Eve Carter and her Four Guardians Tyler, Noah, Cole, & Jacob along with Lady Lorelai Wintersong as advocate going to represent them in the highest court in the Realm in Solaria Eve has bracers and a collar on to stop her powers. Solaria Warriors open the doors for them and take them to the colosseum where there are spectators looking down some hostile and some curious, some afraid the Emperor Kaelen Lightning King of the Solarians along with six other Council members 3 woman and 4 men in total to decide if she and her Guardians are guilty of their crimes. This is quite an interesting read but it also bounces around alot so you must really pay attention so as not to miss a thing so much happens in this conclusion to this phenominal series Elizabeth Hartwell did an amazing job writing this story and the chracters were extremely well developed she is such a creative writer page after page of drama, intrigue, suspense, betrayal, action, very steamy hot sex scenes with Eve and her wonderful Guardians it's definitely a must read series you don't want to miss I highly recommend you so won't be disappointed excellent storyline.

Eve's powers have been blocked and she has been separated from Tyler, Cole, Jacob, and Noah, her guardians, and the men she loves. The Sun Emperor of the Fae/King of Solaria has taken her into "protective custody", but it doesn't take long for Eve to realize that her protector has his own agenda. They will use an ancient fae artifact called the Moonstone to try to find a way to protect the veil between the realms. Eve's guardians will find out about a traitor and a plot in the Fae council and to kill Eve and the King and race to save them from the assassins.Wow, an action packed plot with suspense and time travel, as well as fascinating and unique characters. I think this is a must read book, and series. Fantastic, I loved it!

This is the conclusion of a fantasy series starring fae, demons and humans. Eve is a hybrid of all three, plus having four gorgeous guardians with whom she has several bouts of uninhibited sex. I enjoyed the plot and loved the characters. Eve wisecracks along the way even with the emperor. Magic abounds as Eve comes more and more into her powers. This is the conclusion but I for one would not be opposed to reading more about The Dark Rider causing more havoc somewhere down the road. Very enjoyable and I recommend it to fantasy lovers.

Again, I was silently stunned, fascinated and flabbergasted of the beauty of the Fae’s realm and the magic world with all its details that Ms. Hartwell created so perfectly. I am truly at a loss for words! The story about Eve and her four guardians, Jacob, Cole, Tyler and Noah, is even more complexe than in the previous two books of this fantastic series. There are so many mysteries to be revealed and solved, so many hints to be comprehended that at times my head was spinning. This is the very worthy conclusion of this amazing and phenomenal series, although I am really, REALLY sad that it already ends!
