The author writes well and is quite a storyteller. This book does a great job of historically tracing the development of immunology in humans. It read like a mystery novel with a slew of characters working together, and competitively, solve the enigma of how immune systems work. The beauty of these discoveries is how they are applied in modern medicines and therapies--from the treatment auto-immune diseases to cancer therapies.I gave this book three stars only because it fell short on describing the science. Diagrams, graphics, pictures and a more careful narrative explanation on how immune cells and antibodies work would have been helpful. There is a lot of material out there to draw from. I personally used Youtube, Khan Academy, and online academic lectures help me. I don't think I should have had to leave the book to get a better understanding of the biology. A little more work from the author would have elevated this book from being good to great. However, I still recommend it highly. Mainly for its story telling and the marvel of immune systems.
A good friend of mine was diagnosed with melanoma back in 2011. It was an almost certain death sentence for him. He did his research and found a clinical trial using immunotherapy, and CTLA-4 inhibitors specifically. I told him to go for it because the alternative (Interferon) was known to be pretty ineffective. 7 years later he's still in total remission. Later I heard that Jimmy Carter had been diagnosed with melanoma , and got treated with another type of immunotherapy using something called PD-1 inhibitors, and he was also miraculously cured. I too have been fighting cancer since 2011, and recently I was enrolled in a clinical trial using PD-1 inhibitors against my cancer. It was not successful, but I am still fascinated by this science, so I bought the book and read it this week. Overall I learned a lot about the basics of the immune system, and I think for someone without a background in biomedical science, this is a great read. It has a few shortcomings and seems to wander after the first half. I reluctantly had to skip past some of the material that I just felt wasn't on par with the beginning and end of the book (for example, the whole section on stress and the immune system doesn't stand up to the quality of the first few chapters). There are fascinating stories told about the people behind the scientific discoveries, but I'm pretty sure the author's editors harped on him to 'tell people stories. Make it relatable.' After all, if you want a dry text book on immunology they do sell those on Amazon as well. This book a primer on immunology, a narrative of the history of the science, and an up to date set of stories about the most recent breakthroughs in the field. It has inspired me to read and learn more. My one criticism is that some of the best stuff, CTLA-4 , PD-1 and the latest and greatest CAR-T therapies are only dealt with briefly at the end, and I would have liked to read more about them - especially CAR-T. I've never read anything before with such interest, and you can learn a lot from it.
Can’t wait to finish the last chapter tomorrow morning! Loved the way the technical details are woven into the threads of real life stories. Since my wife is fighting ovarian cancer and my daughter is valiantly fighting MS, reading this book helps me better understand what is going on inside their bodies and gives me more hope for what will surely come ... but time is of the essence!
A tour de force history of Immunology from Edward Jenner to this year's Nobel prize in Physiology and medicine. Dr. Davis makes a difficult subject understandable for lay person, interspersed with anecdotes about Scientists and their pursuit. There is enough information about big pharma and the difference between UK and US approach to patent. The book should be of interest to medical and Science history fans. It may be a hard reading for those without strong Biology background. The excellent bibliography and references alone make this a great addition to my bookshelf.
The beginning and end are the best parts, and pull together and expand on information you may have seen elsewhere. The middle bogs down, and is worth getting past.
I'm an engineer not a medical person but this book, though very technical, never bored me one minute.. And taught me so much..
I bought this book after listening to KQED interview with the author. The talk was interesting and informative. After reading first few pages I realized that the whole interview was based on first chapter. When I went to second chapter onwards, it was not interesting any more. I randomly read hear and there and that's it, it is sitting on my shelf.Usually I like reading medical research papers even though I am a programmer by profession. This book did not keep my interest up all through.
