Review

"Open this book and see Jesus as you’ve never seen him . . . This is one heck of a good read. And it left me feeling better than ever about the Jesus we try to serve and follow." –National Catholic Reporter"Engaging and lively . . . Chilton has done an admirable job of taking us into Jesus’ world and witnessing the life of one of history’s most important figures." –Charlotte Observer"Bruce Chilton, an Anglican priest and religion professor, has written a readable and compelling profile of Jesus and the culture and times in which he lived. Rabbi Jesus is a scholarly pursuit that . . . reads more like a novel. The biography flows with the fluidity of an adventure tale, rich in characters, texture, and detail." –Herald-Sun (Durham, N.C.)

From the Inside Flap

Beginning with the Gospels, interpretations of the life of Jesus have flourished for nearly two millennia, yet a clear and coherent picture of Jesus as a man has remained elusive. In" Rabbi Jesus, the noted biblical scholar Bruce Chilton places Jesus within the context of his times to present a fresh, historically accurate, and revolutionary examination of the man who founded Christianity. Drawing on recent archaeological findings and new translations and interpretations of ancient texts, Chilton discusses in enlightening detail the philosophical and psychological foundations of Jesus' ideas and beliefs. His in-depth investigation also provides evidence that contradicts long-held beliefs about Jesus and the movement he led. Chilton shows, for example, that the High Priest Caiaphas, as well as Pontius Pilate, played a central role in Jesus' execution. It is, however, Chilton's description of Jesus' role as a rabbi, or "master," of Jewish oral traditions, as a teacher of the Cabala, and as a practitioner of a Galilean form of Judaism that emphasized direct communication with God that casts an entirely new light on the origins of Christianity. Seamlessly merging history and biography, this penetrating, highly readable book uncovers truths lost to the passage of time and reveals a new Jesus for the new millennium.

If the protagonist in this book was not our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I would have called this book a good novel. But since this isn’t the case, 1-star that I gave is still too much.I was looking for a book that will explain&tie together the fact that Jesus is a Jew, came to fulfill the Torah not to demolish the Torah, and everything he did was Jewish. This book did NOT accomplish that, and honestly I am a bit puzzled that it is written by a pastor. However, I did find the book that gave me what I was looking for. It is written by rabbi Jonathan Cahn and it is called “The Book of Mysteries”. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is looking for answers.

This book is an elaborate work of fiction in the guise of scholarly literature. I forced myself to finish it, but it is going in the trash. I absolutely do NOT recommend this book to anyone who values logical, cited, objective works of non-fiction.

Chilton tells a very different story than that portrayed by the Christian establishment. You will want to clear your mind before reading this book. But if you can do that, it is an inspiring story of. I can see why the book cover reads "The Jewish Life and Teaching That Inspired Christianity" with the operative word being "inspired" as opposed to "was the foundation of". Loved reading this very different story than what I was brought up with.

A superb examination of a human life. While the author speculates, he does so based on deeply informed scholarship, writing with flare, and plausibility. (Author is a leading expert on Aramaic, the language of ancient Palestine.) I plan to read the book again. If you prefer your old-time Jesus with "cream and sugar" you might find this intense. I've now read it again, and am still resonating with the vividness of the central character of this historical-but-somewhat-novelistic biography. It has blessed me, and sent me deeper into scripture. Highly regarded book! (Update: I've now read it for a third time, and given away three copies.)ps: Pay little attention to those many 1-star reviews from literalists who have yet to learn to read between the lines of scripture. We all have a patient Teacher.

An excellent imagining of the life of Jesus that makes it difficult to disagree with Chilton's depiction.Chilton relies heavily on the political situation in Palestine in the first century to base his story. He also extensively quotes the Gospel of John. There is obviously a risk relying on the non-synoptic gospel but his interpretation makes sense.Highly recommended.

Interesting read. Provocative and clearly controversial. Not something a fundamentalist Christian would probably agree with.

A book covering how he grew up, his life as a Rabbi, and his last days; insights into how a young Jewish man would have been treated in his hometown. This book helps explain Jesus's potential feelings about the Hebrew religion, the Kingdom of God, the Temple, and more... How much was Jesus affected by the teachings of John the Baptist and how were they reflected in Jesus's lifetime of work as a Rabbi? An intricate look into the history and politics of early Jerusalem and how Jesus affected the time. A thought-provoking book, one meant for serious, but open-minded Christians.

A wonderful "biography" of Jesus, highly readable, presenting a picture of Jesus that is relatable. It is based on a deep awareness of the culture and mindset of the time of Jesus. I have recommended this book to almost everyone I know.
