This is a very interesting book if you want to make your own Chinese food in a wok. It gives some history on Chinese food in America and how it's different to what you find in China. The recipes in the book sound wonderful. Unfortunately, I don't own a wok at this time. So I'll have to wait to try any of them. But reading through them, they didn't seem too hard to achieve. If you have a wok, this would be a good cookbook to add to your collection.I received this book for free for my review.

I had not realized before buying this that the content was focused on healthy versions of American Chinese food. What a pleasant surprise! I am new to Wok cooking and this book has been great explaining the different kinds of Wok's, where to buy asian spices and what substitutes to make if you can't find specific items at the grocery store (for example they mention using Mexican Red Chilies if you cannot find Chinese Red Chilies)So far we've made General Tso's Chicken and Dan Dan Noodles. Both of them have been hits with the family. If your new to Wok cooking or want a healthy version of your favorite take-out. This is your book!

This Christmas I received a wok. Cooking is an absolute passion of mine, and I was so excited to get a traditional style carbon steel wok.Only, I had only one or two recipes in my arsenal, certainly nothing worth noting. I needed more and I searched amazon for a cookbook that had authentic style recipes that would still be affordable. I landed on this one.It has some authentic style recipes, healthier versions of well known "Chinese" recipes, along with the basics like plain rice. It also had fun stories on how certain well known recipes came about and how authentic they actually are.I'm lucky to live near a larger city where I have access to grocery stores dedicated to authentic cuisines from every end of the globe, but this book is great because it also breaks it down to ingredients everyone has access to. My family now eats stir fry once a week and I'm happy knowing how much cheaper and healthier it is than take out. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to make delicious stir fry.

This book has all your wok favorites from Dan Dan Noodles to General Tso's Chicken to Lemon Chicken to Hoisin Chicken. It even has your traditional soups like Wonton Soup and Egg Drop soup. Newer favorites like Pineapple Fried Rice are also listed. All of the recipes are budget friendly which is why I love Asian wok food. Most of it is gluten free also which seems to be a wonderful plus these days.The book doesn't fall short of it's title The Essential Wok Cookbook. I know it is a handy little favorite now in our kitchen. We just pop up the table and bring out the wok. One dish we are planning to try next is the Hot and Sour Vegetable Soup. We love Hot and Sour soup but, I can be kind of picky so I hope this lives up to my standards and I am able to play with it to get the perfect soup.I would highly recommend this book if you would like to learn how to make Asian food as it a well written front log of information on products.

I am going to get the bad news out of the way first....it's only one sentence anyway: There were not enough pictures. I don't own a Wok and am not real sure I will get one (simply due to storage space) but I WILL be trying SEVERAL of these recipes! My husband and I love Chinese food and this book is full of old time favorites as well as some unfamiliar but tasty sounding ones! Not only do the recipes include the serving size, prep/cook times, gluten status where applicable, but some actually say "Under $10" although I'm not sure how confident I would be in putting that in print. ;) Most recipes also include a tip which might tell you what ingredients could be swapped out for each other, or the different ways that it could be prepared! The book begins with "the basics" and explains the advantages to preparing at home versus take out (YOU can control how healthy and the cost!) but my very favorite sections were the "Origin Stories"! Who knew that Fortune Cookies aren't even made, served or eaten in China! It's purely an American tradition! The more I think about it, I believe I would use a Wok more often than I use my Quesadilla maker! If you love Asian food you need this cookbook!

Great for the beginner or more experienced cook, this book, which in got in exchange for my honesty opinion, hits the spot for many tastes! I got this book along with a new wok so I was excited to get started again! I love how the book gives you some background and history and illustrations to show you how to do things like wrap an egg roll or wonton, and explains step by step how to cook some if your favorite meals and how to prepare your wok right from the beginning to really use it to the best of its abilities. I love the hot and sour soup recipe and the lighter egg foo young recipe and can't wait to try the salt and pepper squid and the general tso's chicken, which is a take out fave of mine I'd love to do at home! So many pages and an easy read, great direction and a new kitchen essential! Well recommended!

This book is okay but has few photos of dishes and those that are included are not labelled. I would not buy this again.

I was pleasantly surprised while reading through this cookbook. I honestly expected all of the recipes to contain a lot of ingredients I didn't have on hand, but that wasn't the case. There are some things I had to go out to purchase, but luckily my supermarket has a very well stocked section of foods from all around the world. I have only been able to try out one recipe so far (Chicken Chow Main), but other than the oyster sauce I had everything I needed in my pantry. I'll definitely be getting more use out of this cookbook and now have no reason to not use my wok. I'm eager to try some of the vegetarian recipes so I have something other than another boring eggplant parm when my friends require meatless options. I did receive this cookbook in exchange for my review, but my opinions are my own.

It's not anyone's fault that I didn't enjoy this book any more than I did; it's actually to the credit of Mr. Gaiman and everyone else involved that I enjoyed it even this much. You see, I don't like non-fiction and, as a general rule, don't read it. For me, non-fiction gets way too bogged down in facts and too quickly forgets what makes anything worth reading in the first place; ie: a narrative thread to hang onto and someone relatable to root for. Biographies, of which "Don't Panic" is sort of one, gives you the second part, the "someone to root for," but too often gets lost on the path to it's narrative thread by having to stick to the chronological facts exactly as they happened. I gave "Don't Panic" a try, however, because A) it's written about The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," one of my favorite books and book series and B) it's written by Neil Gaiman, a certified genius and one of my favorite writers. If Gaiman couldn't find a way to make the story of one of my all-time favorite stories interesting, then such a thing just wasn't possible.Apparently, it's not possible. Mr. Gaiman does his absolute best here, letting his own sense of humor run free against the landscape Douglas Adams created and he drops in all sorts of deleted bits of Hitchhiker's dialogue amidst the quotes from friends and collegues, but it seems here that Gaiman is so dedicated to giving Adams' story (and the stories he wrote) it's due, that he forgets, or perhaps doesn't feel he has permission to, delete the parts that are just too dry (read: boring) to keep the narrative interesting. Because make no mistake, this book includes EVERYTHING that has ever happened in the world of making The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy one of the best and funniest radio shows/books/video games/movies, etcetera and soforth and so on in the history of the known universe, and while you will learn much about the vagaries of Adams' world-famous procrastination and the corporate ins and outs of the BBC and Hollywood, you will also find yourself nodding off in points, or if not nodding off, certainly wishing the current chapter would come to an end and that the next chapter would be about something completely different. Mr. Gaiman has a deep love and appreciation of Douglas Adams and his work and if you share that love to the same extent, you will find much to enjoy in this book. However, as someone who was mainly interested in the rocky road of the Hitchhiker's Guide with a bit of Dr. Who and Dirk Gently tossed in for good measure, there's an awful lot about conservation specials and climbing Mount Kilamanjaro in a Rhinocerous suit that was set way beyond my interest level. Don't get me wrong, Mr. Gaiman has probably written as good and entertaining a book about Douglas Adams as you could possibly want or expect, but the chapters devoted to projects outside the ones the title led me to expect grind the whole thing down to a screeching halt. This is a book for the truly serious Douglas Adams afficianado; the merely curious should find their entertainment (and their towels) elsewhere.

If you have ever stood in a field staring up at the myriad stars in the night sky and wondering just how it came to be that the humanoid life-form known as Douglas Adams managed to dream up such infinitely improbable adventures, or if you have ever stood in front of a vending machine that has just provided you with a plastic cup filled with a liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea, then in all likelihood you will enjoy this book.Neil Gaiman has taken time off writing his own fantastic adventures to share with us his research into the life and times of Douglas Adams. I for one am very glad that he did as the story he so masterfully unfolds is both sympathetic and enlightening. Gaiman manages to shed not a little light on Adams' creative process and life, from the rigors and panics of his early days of script writing for Doctor Who then the Hitchhiker's radio series all the way through to the very end of his career. Gaiman does a marvelous job of not only telling the tale but also revealing something of the man who said, 'I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.'Adams was a unique writer and a comic creator of genius. He died all too young, but this book is a great tribute to a life fully-lived and to a very human humanoid.

Neil Gaiman's Don't Panic succeeds in so far as the author manages to capture the humor of the late Douglas Adams. It lacks depth as a biography but more than blankets the various aspects and versions of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (H2 G2 ) as well as the five book trilogy. It is correctly described in one of the other reviews as the hyperextended bonus feature that was too long to include on any of the CDs or DVD versions of the radio broadcasts, televisions shows and unfortunately the Disney movie.If you have come looking for this book and have read this far my assumption is you are a Douglas Adams fan. H2 G2, Dirk Gently or possibly Dr. Who fans constitute the target readership for this book. Granted Douglas Adams had a very slight association with the Monty Python's crew; more of common friendships than creative participation but none of this qualifies Don't Panic for a general audience.That portion of the book that is about Douglas Adams is clearly intended as a friends and family type biography. That is, one that is more affectionate than analytical or critical. A very large portion of the discussion of Adams the writer centers around his inability to meet any deadlines which is nothing new for people who know about Adams's history. Daiman does do a decent job of explaining Adamns and missed deadlines by providing the additional context of Adams; too often self-inflicted complex life.Gaiman succeeds as an apologist for Douglas Adams and is someone who can speak in a voice very much like Douglas Adams. I have read as much of Adams published works as are available in America. I own and enjoy the original radio series and the original television series of H2 G2. So I was interested to get to read about the intimate background on most of what occurred in the making of -- to include electronic games and live performances.My conclusion is that this is a fan's book. There may be some other audiences such as those who collect biographies of writers or who wish to know more about the creative / production process in any of several media. The ironic /humorous tone makes for easy reading but one can get somewhat bogged down in details.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Learned a lot of background material about Hitchhikers. Now I should reread the original book again to see what I missed previously. Will recommend to all my friends.

I read the Hitchhiker and all its sequels many years ago. As a result, the details are long gone from my memory. Gaiman writes to the reader who has memorizes and retained every possible detail involved. So, I was bored or lost much of the time. I did enjoy reading about Douglas Adams.

What caught my eye with this title was a flashback of viewing the romantic comedy, "What Women Want" with Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. A story about after one man having an accident, is able to dive into the female psyche, realizing he had women figured out all wrong. A far cry from this book, of course, but the title does indeed make the reader extremely curious. Daniel Bergne chronicles an informative and concise presentation on female sexuality as he defines the differences between the old myths, and scientific findings. He raises questions that have sparked debates for years such as, are women more aggressive than men? What triggers female sexuality, what do fantasies indicate, and discusses mind-body connection. In addition, the author presents information on the reasons for loss of libido, and how lives can change due to its consequences. Information is also presented on intimacy, multiple partners, and emotional connection. Think what he's got to say is important, but...after reading the book am left with the impression that it could be condensed down to a short newspaper article, or perhaps a few paragraphs...The gist of it as I gather:1. our collective social story that women's sexual/arousal wiring is very different, if not opposite to that of men (i.e. their sexuality is emotional/security/relationship based, not promiscuous, not visual, etc.) is belied by the research (of involuntary chemical and anatomical reaction to stimuli...);2. and, that women's sexual arousal is in large measure driven by observation of men's uncontrolled arousal with themselves as object -- what turns them on more than anything is observing how a man finds them so attractive that he loses control of himself (no news here...)3. and, that the social programming is so strong that many woman are not consciously aware (i.e. have repressed...) of the underlying basis of their own emotional and sexual arousal.Read the cliff notes...

Having spent more than forty years in the study and treatment of male and female sexual expression or lack thereof,I found this book to a thorough representation of what is happening in the fields of research of the last twenty years.The writing is indeed a labor of love and well worth reading by any person fascinated by the question of understanding female sexual desire,I am reminded of the words of a female colleague and coworker who said that male sexuality could be explained in words written on the back of a postage stamp but for women one would need all the pages of the Encyclopedia Brittanica. This book that can serve as reference book for those in the field of teaching and treating sexual relationships,

As a single man, the insight into the sexuality of women in this book is a little startling. But, better to know the truth than live in an imaginary world. The scientific evidence to back up what is being put forth is convincing. A great read... riveting...

If the protagonist in this book was not our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I would have called this book a good novel. But since this isn’t the case, 1-star that I gave is still too much.I was looking for a book that will explain&tie together the fact that Jesus is a Jew, came to fulfill the Torah not to demolish the Torah, and everything he did was Jewish. This book did NOT accomplish that, and honestly I am a bit puzzled that it is written by a pastor.However, I did find the book that gave me what I was looking for. It is written by rabbi Jonathan Cahn and it is called “The Book of Mysteries”. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is looking for answers.

This book is an elaborate work of fiction in the guise of scholarly literature. I forced myself to finish it, but it is going in the trash. I absolutely do NOT recommend this book to anyone who values logical, cited, objective works of non-fiction.

Chilton tells a very different story than that portrayed by the Christian establishment. You will want to clear your mind before reading this book. But if you can do that, it is an inspiring story of. I can see why the book cover reads "The Jewish Life and Teaching That Inspired Christianity" with the operative word being "inspired" as opposed to "was the foundation of". Loved reading this very different story than what I was brought up with.

A superb examination of a human life. While the author speculates, he does so based on deeply informed scholarship, writing with flare, and plausibility. (Author is a leading expert on Aramaic, the language of ancient Palestine.) I plan to read the book again.If you prefer your old-time Jesus with "cream and sugar" you might find this intense. I've now read it again, and am still resonating with the vividness of the central character of this historical-but-somewhat-novelistic biography. It has blessed me, and sent me deeper into scripture. Highly regarded book! (Update: I've now read it for a third time, and given away three copies.)ps: Pay little attention to those many 1-star reviews from literalists who have yet to learn to read between the lines of scripture. We all have a patient Teacher.

An excellent imagining of the life of Jesus that makes it difficult to disagree with Chilton's depiction.Chilton relies heavily on the political situation in Palestine in the first century to base his story.He also extensively quotes the Gospel of John.There is obviously a risk relying on the non-synoptic gospel but his interpretation makes sense.Highly recommended.

Interesting read. Provocative and clearly controversial. Not something a fundamentalist Christian would probably agree with.

A thought-provoking book, one meant for serious, but open-minded Christians.

A wonderful "biography" of Jesus, highly readable, presenting a picture of Jesus that is relatable. It is based on a deep awareness of the culture and mindset of the time of Jesus. I have recommended this book to almost everyone I know.
