Great ideas to draw from, no pun intended. I do realistic and abstract mainly in pastels and pencils, this gave me some great ideas. Not for the beginner, more if an idea book over technique.

I just received this book and my head is exploding! On first look this book appears to be focused on printmaking. While a major subject of the book, the pure value is in the details. The tips, self critique prompts and the different ways of using your materials is the true core of this book. You will have lots of why did I not think of that moments. I already used one such tidbit and it elevated the piece I was working on. The book is organized with each step building on the next. You can take it as far as YOU want. Even if you are not leaning toward the printmaking aspect there is something to learn apart from that. For a beginner, you will learn some great ideas and how to critique your work to take it to another level. The advanced Artist will find much to stimulate your mind.The writing style is right to the point and includes the whys and the Artists thoughts. You will not find "now use a green pastel" and projects to give as gifts. This is all about techniques.You working as a team with this book. Making your own choices while you have the necessary guidelines to learn.I ran across this Artist last year and have been waiting for this book for months. My expectations have been exceeded greatly as to what I was hoping to find. The book lies open very well and has an easy to read font. A real winner.

With the word "Pastel" written boldly on the cover, I expected the book to be primarily about the medium of pastel. I found the first four chapters explored various printmaking techniques, primarily. The last two chapters go more thoroughly into the pastel medium. I think this would have been better marketed as a "Mixed Media" book. I have been a printmaker and am now a pastel artist. I own one of Dawn Emerson's demonstration DVD's and was looking forward to her book. It does have good insight into the creative process, but I must admit I was disappointed.

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to expand upon their drawing skills and wake up their artistic vision. It is not solely about pastels, but also a great jumping off place for the exploration of printmaking, drawing with charcoal, frottage and other "mixed media" techniques that can be combined with pastel. I have owned the book for a while and have been working through the first few sections, then I got completely sidetracked into the art of print making prompted by the chapter on mono-printing. Emerson is a good teacher, and I highly recommend her DVD CREATIVE ART CLASS: MARK MAKING AND DRAWING, in which she demonstrates some of the concepts in this book. I work in not only pastel, but water color and oil, and I feel the time spent working through this book and the explorations it inspires will be invaluable to improving all of my work.

I have never written a review before but felt I had to write one for this book. The book is not your 'standard' pastel book, I found it to be inspiring full of great info and freeing. Dawn encourages experimentation and uses pastels in ways I had never thought of. I think anyone of any level will enjoy this book and the only bad thing I can say is that Im not getting much sleep----I have got so many ideas swirling around in my head.

First be warned this is not a typical how-to-pastel book. In fact pastels figure into it only as the last stages in a number of really interesting and exciting ways to start a piece, laying down strong foundations with, for example, monotype and other (completely field friendly if you paint outside) printing techniques that have the effect of adding interest and giving compositional solidity to the pastels that follow. She also provides insightful and very usable techniques for analyzing a piece to decide what is and isn't working and how to fix it if necessary. It's a whole art-concepts tutorial. I recommend it highly.

I love this artist. Her book makes you think outside the box and outside your comfort zone, which leads to new inspirations and surprises in your artwork.

Great Book, great and generous teacher who is not afraid to share all the secrets she has learned over the years. Thank you so much Dawn Emerson.

new to pastels. the exercises in this book have reset my approach. taking me from attempting to replicate a photo or (for student purposes only) another artist's work as exercises .... to creating new work, looking at my tools and outcomes through a different eye. l've relaxed into the discovery of creation. and now understand how to consider and critique my own work. Could not be happier! took the book to my weekly pastels open studio group (which includes professional artists) and everyone found some inspiration in the author's approach of presenting a series on concepts in a chapter and following with a group of exercises. i am certain in at least two cases it also led to some new book sales.

I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down and finished it in an evening. I loved the characters and the Irish history.

I am a fan of books that incorporate the past and the present. I got involved with the plot and the characters.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.Clare is a woman in modern England stuck in a miserable marriage with her controlling husband of 25 years. When she inherits a farm in Ireland, she jumps at the chance for a separation to find happiness and independence of her own. In pursuing her favorite hobby of restoring old furniture, she finds a birth certificate and an old medallion stuffed in an old chair. She decides to research the history of these objects with the help of the local bookseller.Ellen, a young Irishwoman in the early 1900s, starts a new job as a servant to a woman who was an active nationalist Irish volunteer. She has fallen in love with her longtime friend and neighbour Jimmy, who is also a volunteer, and is disappointed that he refuses to marry her until Ireland is free. She feels compelled by both of them to assist with the war effort.I like that Clare finally freed herself from her abusive marriage. Paul is such a controlling, horrible character in this book. It's so sad that Ellen lost everything and never found out the truth in the end. Great historical fiction about Irish history I haven't read much about before.

I picked this book because I love historical fiction, my father-in-law is (directly) from Ireland, and the description seemed intriguing. In the end, the book paid me back with intrigue and an interesting story, but it took a while to get there.One of my pet peeves when reading is when the prose *tells* rather than *shows* and I'm sorry to say that was a frequent distraction in my mind while reading this book. It had a compelling enough story, but the characters felt flat until about halfway through the book. Rather than seeing that as character development, I felt like I just wasn't privy to the personalities of the characters. They were too busy *telling* me things about themselves and their lives.*small spoilers here*I did learn a lesson in this book (one I've had to learn multiple times over in my lifetime): you don't know someone else's situation, so hold back your judgments. The modern day main character, Clare, seemed to very quickly decide to leave her husband when the opportunity arose, though she didn't seem to have the backbone prior to this to even stand up to him. I was so bothered by the fact that she wouldn't pursue marital counseling that I sat frustrated with her through most of the pages. By the end chapters, the character had slowly revealed countless anecdotes of life with her controlling, emotionally abusive husband. No, I never ever liked him. He was quite the villain. I learned my lesson that I was spending so much time judging her that I might have missed parts of her personality.The book carries with it the common millennial psalm/proverb for women to become independent and separate yourself from men so you can "find yourself." As a joyful Catholic, I find that a little shallow, but I recognize its place in our culture. Also as a joyful Catholic, I'm disgusted by a renewed understanding of those laundries, as embodied in the novel. Awful, unchristian practices. Heart-breaking.Overall, the fact that I felt I was being told so much instead of being able to uncover emotions, motivations, and metaphors on my own was frustrating enough to overtake the intrigue of the story. I did cry in pain at times and finally connected with both characters in the last 25% of the book, so that's lovely.Thank you to the author and to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.

With duel timeline, The Forgotten Secret, set in Ireland follows Clare Farrell who inherits a run-down farmhouse in Co. Meath and Ellen O'Brien, living in the same area one hundred years earlier. When re-visiting the farm her Uncle Pádraig left her in his will, Clare's filled with nostalgia, whilst looking at the potential the run-down building has. A view not shared by her husband. Back home, with the support of her grown-up sons, she decides to seize an opportunity to build a new life for herself away from her verbally abusive marriage. I admit, I didn't know much about Irish history before reading this novel and what little I knew was from a British perspective. Like Clare, I remembered the media and the news telling us about 'terrorist' incidents via the BBC. Therefore, I appreciated the research the author did and how she incorporated it into the narrative so I could understand the conflict between the UK and Ireland from an Irish point of view too. 'I felt a pang of excitement and nerves. Too right I wanted to see!! It could be a cellar, or a buried box of treasure, or an entrance to a secret tunnel...I realised I had probably read too many Enid Blyton books in my childhood, but then again, who wouldn't be excited uncovering a concealed trapdoor?' Clare's enthusiasm for rebuilding her life is enhanced by her surroundings. Despite visiting her uncle's farm as a child, there's plenty to discover about the place and the past and I admired how she embraced her findings enough to research and seek out further information. Ellen's life, in contrast, highlights the difficulties of living in a politically volatile era where it is easy to end up in a situation which doesn't reflect your true views and feelings. I liked how the narrative highlights Ellen's plight and concerns and how a century later, the secrets are uncovered. Overall, a delightful novel reflecting the lives of two women who have to overcome difficulties within their lives. I fell in love with the lyrical, poetic writing style of this dynamic duo, Kwame Alexander and Mary Rand Hess, in Solo...And Swing did NOT disappoint! In fact, I think the authors raised their awesome bar to a whole new awesome level!Swing follows the journey of best friends Walt and Noah from Noah's viewpoint. Their mission? Find their cool! Who among us hasn't tried to find their cool? I know I have! One of my favorite features was getting to see and study the artwork that Noah creates! Those details really pulled me into the story in a way that so few stories have. I also loved the jazz references. Whether you're a jazz novice or the Chairman of the Board to seventeen different jazz clubs, readers will find these references to be fun, inspiring, and profound! Walt and Noah's hilarious, awkward, and vulnerable moments will result in a ripple effect, encouraging all who read their journey to embrace a "hug life" philosophy!The underlying message of Swing tackles some of the most painful social issues of the day. Race, prejudice, and division build until...until the reader closes the back cover with tears in their eyes. Swing took a painful subject and gave it a face and a name, hopes and dreams. And how can anyone not break when that is shattered? If only we could look at everyone like that...Four Stars ~ Swing's powerfully poetic narrative will tug on heartstrings and hopefully inspire conversations. This review was actually a pretty tough decision. Swing is another well-crafted novel by the much-acclaimed and beloved author, Kwame Alexander.I had the opportunity to hear him speak/read a few years ago, so I think I’m automatically biased now that Alexander’s work is always fantastic.Everything about swing is interesting and unique. I freaking love quirky Walt or “Swing”...he’s a focused, lovable dweeb who’s also a dedicated friend and you want to slap him silly and hug him at the same time.Noah is also lovable and his plight of unrequited love hits close to home with almost any YA reader.I’m still so torn, though. I’m confused by the abrupt ending. I get that life often deals us blows that destroy us out of nowhere, but I also don’t get it.Hmmmmm

Noah, Walt and Sam (Samantha) have been best friends since elementary school, but ever since they got to high school, Noah hasn't been able to figure out how to tell Sam that he really likes her. No matter how much Walt (aka Swing) encourages him to take a chance, Noah struggles to express his feelings for Sam. Inspired by love letters he finds in a thrift store, Noah finally starts to put his feelings onto paper using both art and poetry. While I related to Noah, I was utterly charmed by Swing's humor and optimism. Readers will want to talk when they reach the end--be there for them, as they find their voice about the larger issues impacting our society.

Kwame Alexander and Mary Rand Hess have done it again! He’s gotten into the mind of today’s teens and written a beautiful, real story, complete with friendship, love, struggle, and heartbreak. I liked this book. I was a fun read with great illustrations. The subjects discussed in the book were interesting & compelling too.However, the book does not cite where they got this information from. They have no reference anywhere in the book. Here and there, they mention a study done by somebody that provides evidence for something they wrote about, but there is no concrete reference that one would expect from a book about facts.I don't think any of the cracked's authors of this book have expertise on any of the subjects discussed here. So, they have to compile the information from somewhere and the readers should have access to that.One might say that they trust crack to provide the information accurately but as a skeptical person, I would like to evaluate the accuracy case by case. Also, having a reference would help a reader if the reader wants to do further reading and research about the subject.I didn't see anybody bring this subject up, so I thought I add this objection.I won't be using anything I read in this book in a conversation or as advice in my daily routine until I can confirm it from independent sources. I hope all the readers of this book do the same.

I'm a huge fan of Cracked and I was really excited about reading this book. I was a bit disappointed, however.I knew it was going to be mostly information from the website, but I was hoping they would have made each section a little longer. It seems that they truncated the original articles a little bit. I wish they would have added a little more information to expound on the stories more. I think there's a lot more on the website they could have added as well.I like how it's made to look like a school textbook and kind of poking fun at that. That was a good decision. And there's some pictures added just for the book with new captions that are pretty funny. I liked that.The biggest negative is the lack of sources. On the site, of course, there are embedded links throughout each article which you can use to see their sources. You can't have links in a real book, obviously, but I was surprised they didn't have footnotes or anything. You wouldn't think that would be a big deal, but I think a big draw of the book is that you can show it to others who might not read the site. I would love to give it as a gift, but without the sources it just sounds like a bunch of unfounded information used for comedy. It seems very non-credible, especially with the comedic tone.Another big negative is that it doesn't have all the pictures with captions that the online articles have. I understand why using those wouldn't make much sense, but usually the funniest parts are from those picture captions and not having them really loses something. As I said, they do have some new pictures with captions but they are few and far between.All that said, I really enjoyed reading the book and these types of articles are my favorite on cracked.

If you love to laugh, are older than 20, want to know all the ridiculous and wrong things you were taught as a child, this book is a must. In it, you will learn why using a toilet is bad for you; the ways your brain hasn't evolved and why; the reason why you shouldn't get annual check ups; and lots of other things having to do with your body, history, science, medicine, etc. You will find yourself laughing uproariously at the humorous way these facts are presented. THE TITLE IS VERY APROPOS !!!!!

Sitting on the coffee table, it's curious cover invariably attracts one of my guests. As they draw it towards them, I say "Careful that this is hard to put down" "Oh I'm really not a book reader" they reply and crack the thing open.It's a joy to watch their heads pulling forward in disbelief and even more fun when you see them just lost into a different world. Some of the facts they present are disgusting but all are fascinating! It's the perfect entertainment book, especially if you want your table top books to deserve the place on the table!It's definitely not for children without an adult but it is fun and it is filled with fun facts that you don't even feel the need to challenge - but do - everything they mention has a legitimate source.

If you already like cracked then go ahead and save your money since I can remember everything in this book from the website. And I don't even read everything on the website I only skim them. One negative is because this is a link it lacks links to their source material so you kinda need to do a little digging if you want to look more into some of the stuff.A word of warning to those uninitiated to cracked...some people HATE Cracked. They either think it's the same as the old print magazine or maybe they just don't like the humor or whatever. I don't mean this as in you'll probably hate the book, no you'll probably enjoy it. I mean if you're driving in the car with someone on a long trip and you guys run out of things to talk about and you say some interesting fact you heard on Cracked like "I read on Cracked that Prostitution is technically legal in Antarctica." They'll immediately discount it as fake and be sure to let you know that you're stupid. So yeah keep it to yourself.

The document is a map--and so Mr. Lester's book is in essence about cartography, and sixteenth century cartography at that, a specialist's dream. But the tale of the making and then the hiding and the losing and the finding of this extraordinary and very large document--it called the Waldseemüller Map, and it now belongs to the Library of Congress--is sufficiently exciting to be almost unbearably thrilling. And anyone who can make cartography thrill deserves a medal, at the very least. The mapmakers in question were German: Martin Waldseemüller and his poetically-inclined colleague, Mathias Ringmann. Come the beginning of the sixteenth century, and working in southern France these two, like many in the European intellectual world, were beginning to hear rumors that a new continent had lately been found, halfway between Spain and Japan. (This was fifteen years after Columbus, who still had no clue what he had found in 1492--to his dying day he insisted that he had merely found a hitherto unknown piece of Asia.) The rumors swiftly became accepted fact: in the early 1500s the pair came across two printed accounts of the alleged new continent--accounts that were prolix, flamboyant, unreliable and in parts very saucy (there was material relating to the cosmetic self-mutilation, anal cleanliness and sexual practices of the locals) written by a colourful Italian explorer and sorcerer named Amerigo Vespucci. Crucially Vespucci claimed in one of these papers that “on this last voyage of mine…I have discovered a continent in those southern regions that is inhabited by more numerous peoples than in our Europe, Asia or Africa, and in addition I found a more pleasant and temperate climate than in any other region known to us…” As it happened, the mapmakers had already been commissioned to create a new world map--and so on it, they both agreed after reading Vespucci's accounts, they would now draw this new body of land, and they would give it a name. After some head-scratching they agreed the name should be the feminine form of the Latinised version of Amerigo Vespucci's Christian name: the properly feminine place-nouns of Africa, Asia and Europe would now be joined, quite simply, by a brand-new entity that they would name America. And so, in 1507, their map was duly published; and in large letters across the southern half of the southern continental discovery, just where Brazil is situated today, was the single word: America. It was written in majuscule script, was a tiny bit crooked, curiously out of scale and looking a little last-minute and just a little tentative--but nevertheless and incontrovertibly, it was there. It caught on: a globe published in Paris in 1515 placed the word on both segments of the continent, north and south. The word was published in many books in central Europe--Strasbourg in 1509, Poland in 1512, Vienna in 1520; it was found in a Spanish book in 1520. In Strasbourg, five years later, another book lists 'America' as one of the world's regions and finally, in 1538, Mercator, the new arbiter of the planet's geography, placed the names North America and South America squarely on the two halves of the fourth continent. And with that, the name was secure; and it would never be changed again. Toby Lester has done American history the greatest service by writing this elegant and thoughtful account of the one morsel of cartographic history that would shake the world's foundations. In 2003, the Library of Congress paid $10 million for the only existing copy of the 1507 map that was the first to show the New World and call it America. Lester ranges over the history of cartography, such as the zonal maps of the Middle Ages that divided the world into three parts—Africa, Europe and Asia. In 1507, Martin Waldseemüller and Matthias Ringmann, working with a small group of scholars in a small town in eastern France produced their map, based on Amerigo Vespucci's voyages to the West and discovery of South America. In just a few decades the Waldseemüller map was out of date, but its world-changing status lived on, and in 1901 a Jesuit priest, poking around a small German castle, stumbled on a copy. As an avid antique map collector for the past 15 years, I was aware of this text through my obscure cartographic circles. But this book should not be considered an esoteric text on a singular document, the Waldseemuller map. Yes, the Waldseemuller map printed in 1507, but thought lost for 400 years and existing today in only a single copy found in 1901, is the centerpiece of this story. It is the map that gave the name America to the newly discovered lands, and is considered America's birth certificate.How the map came to be is an epic tale that spans centuries and civilizations. Toby Lester is a detective that leaves no trail unexamined, and has found as many avid antique map collectors have, that when you examine one map you find a trail of bread crumbs that must be consumed.This delightful tale of discovery and voyage, religion and humanism, is tremendously delightful. The reader will learn what many cartophiles already know. To paraphrase the History of Cartography Project: A map is a metaphor for science and knowledge, for trade and commerce, for colonial and religious expansion. All those stories and more are found in a map, and all those stories are told well by Toby Lester in "The Fourth Part of the World."

As some of the other reviewers have noted, this is much more than the tale of how a pathbreaking map of the world got drawn, published and circulated.It does tell that fascinating bit very well,however. But for me the book provided a portal into the opening decades of the discovery of the transatlantic world and how the ancient lore from Herodotus to Ptolemy got transformed, yet how some old myths endured.I have always been fascinated with the "imaginary voyage" vogue. If you've ever read and enjoyed, as I have, Babcock's classic "Legendary Islands of the Atlantic" or Johnson's equally fascinating "PHantom Islands of the Atlantic" then this book will be your cup of tea. It describes the intersection of navigational and cartographical science with enduring myths of creation and cosmology.I am reading the book for the second time, and still find overlooked nuggets of revelation.If you only read one book on the Age of Exploration and Discovery, this should be it. It is a virtual encyclopedia of the topic, but reads like a novel.

This book, an historical adventure story, is about a 1507 map that had been lost for centuries, and about how America got its name, but more importantly it is about human progress and the unending quest to discover who we are, how we got here, and where we fit into the grand scheme of things. We learn how the stories of Prester John, Genghis Khan, Copernicus, Marco Polo, the Medici, Ptolemy, Columbus, Vespucci, and many more have combined to advance mankinds knowledge and progress.This book gives the reader great insight into the minds of educated people during the middle ages and the Renaissance. We learn of their fears, ignorance, superstitions, hopes, and ambitions. We learn of mankinds slow but steady progress through the centuries in learning about ourselves, our environment and our limitations.This is a gem of a book and the impressive product of an enormous amount of research. If you enjoy history and adventure you will enjoy this book.Highly recommended.

The Fourth Part of the World is a great book about map history and perspectives through the ages; nothing what maps look like today. The first time was listening to the CD, but wanted to get into it in more detail without distraction and got the hardcopy; excellent.

This is a very interesting book. It is really detailed and sometimes a bit too much so for the casual reader. It begins with how a particular map came into existence, but then that particular map does not get discussed until well past the half-way mark. However, it's got a lot of information on western geographic development. I was disappointed that there was no mention of the great Chinese admiral of the Ming dynasty, Zheng He, who was sailing great distances well before Columbus.

Along the same lines as Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs and Steel, in terms of being an "idea driven, non-fiction" book, as the WSJ review quote says on the front cover. As a lover of non-fiction myself, I found this book enlightening from cover to cover. It filled in a lot of blanks for me about the middle ages and the weird things, like headless persons, people used to believe in.Unfortunately, the book doesn't resolve the question of how Waldseemuller's seminal 1507 map showed the Pacific, and the South American Pacific coast, years before Balboa and Magellan actually (allegedly) saw it for the first time for Europeans (though ideas are proposed -- it's a question that could be ultimately unanswerable).For me, given that Waldseemuller's South American west coast is represented by two straight lines (a physical improbability) it seems likely that it was a good guess, and Lester's book does suggest such a reason as a possibility. In Waldseemuller's second map, made a few years later, he recanted on South America's Pacific coast, and drew the continent as ending against the edge of the map, much more like Ptolemy's original map, for reasons unknown.But what the Waldseemuller map really represents, and where the Guns, Germs and Steel book is lacking, is the tremendous intellectual achievement that writing; mass (ostensibly religious) conferences inspired by writing; and the printing press gave to the Europeans. Christopher Columbus was one of the first people to benefit from early, printed books. About the Author

Sitiki, also known as Jack Smith, was born in Africa and died, a free man, in St. Augustine, Florida. He wrote his memoir between 1869 and 1871 with the assistance of historian Buckingham Smith, his former master. There are relatively few narratives by African-born slaves, which makes it exceedingly difficult to see their lives as slaves in America against the backdrop of their cultural and religious roots. The story told by Sitiki helps somewhat. He sketchily recalls his freeborn life in a village, as well as his domestic servitude in Africa before being sold into foreign bondage. Patricia C. Griffin has done an admirable job in presenting this long-lost narrative, without over-embellishing it or over-speculating on the more opaque parts of Sitiki's long life and prominence in ante- and post-bellum Saint Augustine, Florida. We could wish that Sitiki had said more about his people in the West African interior, but he was very young when seized by slave traders. In America, he experienced an uncommonly benign enslavement. It is on the latter that he focused his recollections.

This is a great book, full of history and interesting facts about St. Augustine.

Griffin) has two equally important characteristics for this lover of history--the perspective of the person that actually lived through the time and place; and the interrelated information collected by a diligent researcher. Sitiki's narrative, though brief, was very intriguing with its wealth of details regarding the places in which he lived (Africa and America). The complimentary information added by Griffin comprised the majority of the 200+ page book. Sorely missed were the raw thoughts and emotions that might have been a part of the narrative if it had been written by Sitiki himself as opposed to being recorded by his owner, Buckingham Smith.
