This book is a great read before bringing home a new kitten! It has some chapters you'll want to reference throughout the kittens first few years but I recommend this before your kitten comes home so you are prepared. Great information on first few days, meeting other pets, medical, vaccines, etc Instagram @julias.books

WOW! Far more than I expected! First off there are six types of cards and they can be mix and matched used a number of ways. If you buy this set and an alphabet set of your choice, then you really have all the flashcards you need for awhile.1. What goes together? or for some pairings where do they live?-spider/web-dog/doghouse-bird/nest-farm girl/barn/goat-fireman/firetruck-bee/flower (though i would have preferred a hive with honey)2. Which words rhyme?-bear, pear,-goat, boat,-cat, hat-frog, log, dog-sled, bed, red-cake, snake3. How many do you see?-1 mouse (really wish they also included a house card for ryhming and to give a person or cat a home-2 turtles-3 seahorses-4 owls-5 ducks-6 lady bugs-7 newts-8 snails-9 goldfish-10 crows/black birds4. What color is this?- yellow crayon- green paint on green paintbrush- red marker- blue crayon- orange crayon- purple marker- brown paint on brown paintbrush- white paint on white paintbrush- black markerthen can go through all the other cards and name the colors for any object you want... the shapes work best for new learners as there are only 2 colors present on each card.5. Love these cards! Cards include numbers 1-10, shapes, colors and much more! Pictures are big and colorful! My two year old loves practicing with them! Great for beginners! The only thing I didnt like was the package came looking like it had been used. But the cards inside looked brand new.

These are made from quality cardboard that isn't too thin so they're pretty durable. There are some things I like about them and some I don't. This set has a whole bunch of picture cards, like animals, things, places etc. The pictures are really great, they're well drawn and clear as to the subject matter. There are some cards that are shapes and directions. These a decent as well but I'd prefer them to be a bit more simple and obvious. The color cards are a little difficult for my ESL learners. They see the pen/pencil/crayon and get confused as to what i'm trying to teach. I would prefer these cards just have solid colors. This isn't a deal breaker but I will be using flashcards from a different set to demonstrate colors. Overall i'm pretty happy with these.

I use these cards to teach ESL online. I especially use the shapes and colors every single day. They are simple and basic, and perfect for my needs. Numbers and rhyming words are also included.

I like the cards, but I was very disappointed with the packaging and the color cards. The box was tattered and worn like it was a used deck. Not sure if it was or wasn't but I'm not going to worry about it. Also, the color cards should have been the entire color not seperated with two colors on the card. It it quite confusing to a child that is trying to learn one color at a time. Overall, they will be used, but if I had a choice I wouldn't purchase them for what I am trying to do with my grandson who is under 4 years old. They probably would be great for those pre-school age.

I bought these flashcards to use with ESL students. Overall, I was very impressed with the cards. However, there were some directional cards that were hard to understand, especially the left and right ones. We use the cards a lot and the students get a kick out of the images. I would recommend these cards for other ESL students or for little kids who are just beginning to learn colors, shapes, etc.

So much better than the Brighter Child brand. I will repeat - So much better than the Brighter Child brand! We have owned a lot of packs of flash cards and School Zone Publishing has never disappointed. Buy both brands if you want but I am certain you will toss the Brighter Child ones in drawer.

Nothing fancy. But that's not saying it's not worth getting. These flashcards are brilliant. My 5yr old walks around naming off the items/colors/shapes around the house. This book was awesome. It was hard to read at times because it was so close to home but I’m glad I read it. I loved it. Adam took a lot of hits in this book he was constantly being called a loser, a scumbag. He was anything but that. He loved a girl who had a hard life too. Elena just want to be loved I think she stay with Chad because she didn’t want to be along turn a blind eye to everything Chad did. She could have had Adam at anytime but didn’t see it until she did. Maybe it took years but she finally saw it. The both where in different relationships but loved each other was it cheating I don’t know. I’m actually glad Chad cheated or I’m sure Elena would have never left. But Chad a point she was never all in she was in love with someone else. I love the small town diner they why it help the town. Charle, Shannon, Chris & Judy were great characters.

Yet again, Jaxson Kidman has given us a story that delivers on every level. Every story he writes is heart wrenching and beautifully written. Imagine Us is no different. This story is amazing. It will break your heart and give you hope. It will make you laugh, cry and want to throw your e-reader across the room in frustration. I spent equal time cursing Adam and Elena and rooting for them to have their HEA. When I finished, I missed characters that I had become invested in. This is a book I will re-read occasionally when I want to visit with old friends. I highly recommend Imagine Us and all of Jaxson Kidman's other books.

Paul A. Volcker worked in the United States Federal Government for almost 30 years, culminating in two terms as chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from 1979-1987. Earlier he served as Undersecretary of the Treasury for Monetary Affairs and president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Since leaving the Federal Reserve Mr. Volcker has continued his public service: as chairman of the Volcker Alliance; as head of President Obama's Economic Recovery Advisory Board; chair of the investigation of the UN's Oil-for-Food program; and head of the committee formed by Swiss and Jewish organizations to investigate deposit accounts and other assets in Swiss banks of victims of Nazi persecution and to arrange for their disposition.Educated at Princeton, Harvard, and the London School of Economics, Mr. Volcker is a recipient of honorary doctorates from each of his "alma maters," as well as a number of other American and foreign universities.Christine Harper has been a financial reporter and editor for more than two decades. Paul Volcker (with Christine Harper) has written in a manner that is simple and clear. This means 'simple and clear' to anyone who knows anything at all about The Federal Reserve (Fed) which is the USA's Central bank. This doesn't mean that an interested reader will learn the many details connected with our central bank. It is not that kind of a book. There are many other books that will serve the purpose of explaining the "nuts and bolts' of the system. can be called a personal description in skeletal form, of Volcker's early life and education, followed by a reasonably fleshed-out account of his professional life as Chairman of the Fed, his activities thereafter, and his concerns about the future. The book is around 290 pgs. long, and has a very good 'time-line' section before the first chapter.Paul Volcker was Chairman of the Federal Reserve for 8 years, 1979-1987. During most of that time Ronald Reagan was President. The national economy was in a pickle when Volcker took over. Monetary inflation was over 10%. Dr. Volcker is best known as the Fed Chairman who stood rock solid behind the corrective course of maintaining high discount (interest) rates (up to 20%), long enough to break the back of high inflation. (High discount rates are painful to businesses but pleasurable to savers).Mr. Volcker remained active as chairman of various boards and in other ways. For example he chaired the board behind the successful investigation of corruption in the "Oil For Food" program (involving Iraq) launched in 1996. Another example of post-Gov't. work is as chairman of the so-called "Volcker Commission" that successfully investigated alleged irregularities involving Swiss Banks as holders of unreported assets that had belonged to Jewish victims of the WW 2 Holocaust.Though Paul Volcker still lives (over 90) as I write this, he is unlikely to be remembered now (2018) by younger generations unless they are involved in the subjects of economics and the Federal Reserve. In that the aforementioned subjects don't generally interest the 'man in the street' or perhaps not even the general reader, I don't see this book as being a knockout of a seller other than to libraries, bankers, financial advisors and contemporaries of Dr. Volcker. I hope I am wrong about this.Readers will learn of the 'Triffin Dilemma' pertaining to the gold supply, and about Volcker's 'Three Verities' which he considers (and any citizen should consider) highly important to this country. They are (1), Stable Prices; (2), Sound Finance, and (3), Good Government.A certain revelation in this book that I was completely unaware of is the fact that President Reagan, in company with and via Chief of Staff Jim Baker, made an embarrassing demand of Chairman Volcker - a demand involving the interest rate level. (Pgs. 118-119).I highly recommend the book.

A great book by a great man. A legend in financial history. There is a lot of history here and Paul Volcker looks back on some of these events-what he did right and what he delayed in doing. While he may have his critics, the reader is left with Volcker's strong desire for public service. Paul Volcker knocks the ball out of the park through his autobiography, published at the advanced age of 90. There’s something endearing about Volcker’s style: he comes off as a chip off the old block, approachable, a wise and simple man.Fiscal standards became unbridled proceeding August 1971 when the last vestige of the US Dollar Gold Convertibility Standard was dismantled by fiat. The money supply grew like never before and it eventually set off a wave of price inflation in major markets including the price of gasoline and cost of borrowing. Geopolitical events unraveling in the Middle East weren’t helping, and the US Dollar itself risked being speculated into oblivion.Paul Volcker may be considered “The Fed’s Last Hawk”. As chief of the Fed, he administered the medicine necessary to extinguish the United States’ epoch of inflation, or as he termed it, the Great Inflation. As the newly appointed Chairman of the Fed in 1979 with the inflation rate over 13 percent, Volcker wasted no time, immediately raising interest rates. His mission: “lead a war against inflation.”“I suppose if some Delphic oracle had whispered in my ear that our policy would result in interest rates of 20 percent or more, I might have packed my bags and headed home.”Indeed, at its peak: “the rate on three-month Treasury bills eventually exceeded 17 percent, the commercial bank prime lending rate peaked at 21.5 percent, and, most sensitively, mortgage rates surpassed 18 percent. Those rates had never been seen before in our financial history.” The unemployment rate proceeded to creep over ten percent, and a wave of bankruptcies pounded the Savings & Loans lending industry, crippling the economy into recession as the wicked chimera of stagflation roared.Stagflation is the economic phenomenon where price inflation and economic recession intersect. As a central banker, it is the most difficult balancing act, a central banking conundrum: do you raise the interest rate to combat inflation, or do you lower it to combat the recession? If you raise it to calm prices, you also cause the cost of borrowing to go up. If you lower it to stimulate financial facilities, money supply growth continues and the price level never ceases to increase.History proved Volcker right. Leading the Fed, his aggressive approach against inflation got prices under control, despite the severe market disruptions it caused. This then set the stage to combat the recession, and by the end of his term in 1987 both inflation and unemployment were normalized.“Now the environment is quite different. The generation with direct experience of stagflation is passing on.”

This is an excellent book about an American few of us have heard of, but whose impact has been monumental on American society. We learn in this book who inspired Volcker and how he became the person he became. There are numerous inside stories of a remarkable career that spanned many administrations. It was interesting to hear how monetary policy worked in the days well before I was born.Being a lifelong student of economics, I really enjoyed the insight to some of the problems Volcker faced too, so if you also like econ, this will be great for you, though it does not really go too deep, and shouldn't be a problem for people who aren't much interested.Really touching stories behind the numbers, and funny insights to a lot of things you never knew about. I'll let you discover them on your own. Highly recommended.Enjoy.

Excellent read. A very readable walk thru of the national and international finance landscape starting with the post war through to current events. The story of personal and professional ethics unparalleled.

Volcker had and still has an incredibly unique perspective on public service and the financial universe. His memoirs provide fascinating insight into what a motivated person with a fabulous intelect can contribute. His advice for going forward will hopefully be taken and his recommendations implemented.

First I am an RN (an OLD RN) and to me modern Nursing began with Miss Nightingale. Prior to her works hospitals were a place to be feared. Nurses were women who were paid in Port Wine and worked 20 hour days carrying slop buckets and then delivering meal trays or changing bandages. Miss Nightingale along with Dr Ignaz Semmelweis on th emedical side,brought the simple idea of cleanliness equals health to the public. The simple act of hand washing and circulating air by opening windows made dramatic changes in a patient's chance of survival. Prior to that era doctors would go from autopsy to surgery to office hours and never wash their hands or change their bloody coat. (That's just nasty isn't it?)Now the younger Nurses I know say Miss Nightingale was old fashioned and something of a prude as it came to what a Nurse is. Well maybe so, but if it had not been for someone beginning a school to educate Professional Nurses there would not BE the career/calling/occupation of A NURSE for the past century or more. We don't wear aprons, don't wear caps, don't salute the doctors, but we DO make all the difference in patient care. Thank you Miss Nightingale for being A NURSE!I downloaded this as a free book, but just as well would have paid for a hard copy as it is a classic beauty in my opinion.

This is a classic and I recommend that it be read by all nurses. Nightingale was a pioneer. She established the dignity and importance of educated nursing care for the care of the sick -- and for the health of the community. While it may seem quaint at some points, the importance of her basic insistence on sanitation cannot be over emphasized. It was a new idea in Victorian England! It remains very important in modern health care with the rise of super infections which resist antibiotics. Note: The first antibiotic was not available to health care of that era -- the first antibiotic was penicillin, used initially to treat sypillis in soldiers during WW II.

Remember, clean the bedpan after every use. Once a day is not often enough. Open a window so you patient doesn't smother in the stink.Did someone really have to tell us these things? Yes, someone did. And Florence did so, in a clear and precise manner with a touch of wit. I wish more people knew of her insight and wit, which survives to this day. On women's dress in the Victorian age she says, "the dress of women is daily more and more unfitting them for any mission or usefulness." and then jokes, "every woman now either shuffles or waddles" from all the crinoline and lace. In regards to visitors she advises nurses that the patient should not be surprised "except by thieves."And yet there are other gems here that modern nurses will see as well, like informing her readers that it is rude to talk to the doctor about them in their hearing or that you should sit and not appeared rushed when patients need to talk.

Much of what is contained in this book will be recognized by nurses today. The need for sanitation, healthy food, and plain common sense is relevant today. Without Florence Nightingale nursing would not be the respected profession it is today. I referenced this book several times when writing papers for my BSN and MSN. Miss Nightingale was also a statistician whose work is still recognized today. She put her statistical data to use in convincing those in power that reforms in healthcare needed to take place. Miss Nightingale could have, with her large private income, lived in the lap of luxury but instead went to the Crimea and provided care to those in great need. That experience is the basis for the nursing care we provide today.

I know this is a classic piece of nursing history and Florence certainly doesn't need my approval - she has already endured. But the format of this version is easy to read and follow. I liked that part a lot.I read this as a requirement for a class, but in the end, wondered why I had never read it before that? The class drew comparisons between then and now - and that made it extremely interesting to read.Anyone in the medical field should read this at least once.The language might put some off (Florence didn't speak modern English of course), but the reasonably intelligent can get through the language from long ago just fine. I enjoyed that challenge. It's a short read if the challenge of the language puts anyone off.

As a Registered Nurse for over 26 years, I have never read this work before. It was free on Kindle and came highly recommended. What a wonderful glimpse of the foundations of nursing. Although it can be viewed as a historical text, it also is fine contemporary reading. As nurses, we become so focused on the science and technology,(and dare I say, overrun by the weight of our workloads and liability that comes with it) the ability to "minister" to the human being before us is lost.. daily barriers prevent us from providing the "care" that is fundamental. Interventions such as light, fresh air, sleep and comfort and "quieting of the mind from excessive worry" are not just interventions to be used in the absence of technology but as an important adjunct to it. Also in the spirit of taking care of ourselves, this work contains valuable insights for us as well. Elegant historical prose is refreshing. She was indeed a wise visionary. As I was reading, I wondered what she would say about nursing today...

Glad to get another book for my library to replace other nursing books lost in the house fire. I absolutely LOVE Florence Nightingale.

Ms. Nightingale was an extremely intelligent and severe woman. I wish I had met her in person. However, this discussion on good nursing is inspiring, but a little redundant at times. It is actually useful to anyone caring for sick people, even a parent, sitter, or nurse's aide.

About the Author

So! The third installment of Kingsbridge is HERE and I am absolutely loving Column! 5 stars all the way, everything you'd want from Ken F. in a book. I want to talk directly to the reader who has not yet read any of the 3 Kingsbridge books. You must start with Pillars of the Earth. It's the greatest book I've ever read and it unearthed my passion for historical fiction. Even IF you're not into historical fiction, it's impossible that you wouldn't love this book or its series or any of Ken's novels. Pillars has had a lifelong impact on me. It's that book that just stays with you after you've finished the amazing journey it will lead you on. I'm not a master with words or reviews, but if you've yet to read any of these all I have to say is: you're in for a treat!

Pillars and World Without End are my favorite books of all time. I'm also very interested in religious history and persecution, so I highly anticipated the release of this book.Unfortunately, it was just really bad. The book had nothing to do with Kingsbridge, which was disappointing, but I could have gotten over that, IF the book had contained rich characters and plots like the first two books. Instead, this book featured super boring characters who meandered their way through 900 pages of ABSOLUTELY NO PLOT. Additionally, there were about five new people introduced per page, all with similar names (Francis, Henri), and you never knew if they were going to be major characters, or if they would never be mentioned again. I seriously started taking notes. I have about five handwritten pages of names....and I'd say about 10% turned out to be recurring characters. The other 90% had no impact on the plot.Unlike Pillars & WWE (and most of follett's other wonderful books), I never cared about any of the characters, or knew what motivated them. I found myself constantly thinking "wait, why are they doing this?" Or "wait, when was the last time these two characters interacted with each other? It doesn't make sense that they're enemies!"This was just a complete mess. I really looked forward to this book for months, and I hesitated to write this review until I was finished with the whole thing...hoping against hope that it would get better. It didn't. I'm so disappointed.

Though I've read the earlier novels in this series I was not and am not obsessed with them, nor am I obsessed with Ken Follett despite having read many of his books. Having said thatTHIS NOVEL IS JUST PLAIN EXCELLENT and sadly, very timely. The overall theme is tolerance vs. bigotry. Centered in Elizabethan England and peopled primarily with English characters, it portrays the conflicting views (not all that many when you come down to it) between Catholics and Protestants and the ensuing horrible bloodshed through much of the 16th century. A significant portion of the novel is set in France, with smaller episodes in Spain and the Netherlands.Protagonist Ned, after witnessing Catholic excesses (triggered more by greed and hopes of material gain than by religious belief) decides to devote his life to promoting tolerance and fighting excesses. Joining up with Princess/Queen Elizabeth he works in multiple capacities to support her policy of comparative tolerance. Evil Pierre, whose entire being is permeated by greed rather than religion, conspires with supporters of Catholicism in France (who are power-hungry rather than religious believers), triggering multiple episodes of bloodshed.Ned and Pierre are juxtaposed against one another as are the two women in Ned's life. English Margery is a true believer in Catholicism and is ready to do what she can to preserve the faith, legal or not. French Sylvie is Protestant and ready to do whatever it takes to assist other Protestants. Both become involved in illegal activities because of their beliefs. They are essentially alike.A host of other characters, some historical and others fictional, take the reader from the coronation of Elizabeth to the Guy Fawkes plot and hopefully remind readers that religious (and racial, too, for that matter) differences are really superficial and that a great deal more unites people than divides them. Take notice: World of 2017!

Spoiler alert.......I am a huge fan of Mr. Follett and have read many of his novels over the years. I was super excited about this novel and started reading it as soon as the book was delivered. I finished a few days later and am sad to say I had to force myself to finish the book. I struggled to connect to any of the characters in the story......and sort of got lost with multiple storylines and minor characters. The love story between Ned and Margery started out promising.....but then became a minor plot point for most of the book. It was similar to the Jack/Aliena and Caris/Merthin plot lines (from the previous Kingsbridge books) but with much less detail. I found that I wasn't even rooting for the romance to prevail. Let's not forget the main character missing for most of the book.......Kingsbridge itself. Most of the story is in other places and I found myself constantly wondering what was going on back in Kingsbridge. I am going to reread the book, maybe it will be better the second time.

Like so many, I am a tremendous fan of Ken Follett, and have read and re-read Pillars of the Earth and World without End. I enjoyed them as much for their rich characterization as for the splendid history immersion. Like many, I am very disappointed with Column of Fire and also will not finish the book-it compares so poorly with the first two Kingsbridge books. There was a clue upon opening the book: the big, wide spaces between the lines of the type set. The book has as much empty space as the type set. Although there was, of course, the occasional Follett brilliance, overall the book seemed to be only a very good rough draft. Like another Reviewer, I was dismayed with the occasional use of modern slang. I am rating it 3 stars only because Follett at his worst is better than most at their best. This book will be donated to the library.
