Wow. This book was painful for me. I've read all of her publications (including by her pseudonym), and she was an auto-buy. But this book was just painful. Usually the flash forward/back doesn't bother me, but when 88% of the book vacillates back and forth with me not caring what happens to the depressingly flat main character? Well...I just didn't like it.I had tweeted to Ms. Williams asking for a family tree of her books. I never received a reply. When I finished this book and saw that she finally connected it to another...well...heck, I don't even remember that book Beatriz. I read a lot of books. I can't keep all your facts straight when you go back and forth and back and forth. I'm sorry. I really wanted to like this. I just felt like this book was all build up to a "oh wait lemme flip that oh lemme flip that again oh look did you see what I did there? HAHA dear reader I don't care what you think" ending.I'm writing this review so that I remember not to buy any future books. And sadly, I'm pulling her from my twitter authors list so that I don't make the mistake again. That is how strongly I feel. It is only 2 stars because I did manage to finish it.

I first read Beatriz Williams' Along the Infinite Sea, which I thoroughly enjoyed - the characters, the plot twists, the time period. Naturally, I turned to Cocoa Beach, her latest release, to read more Beatriz Williams. Cocoa Beach is a fairly good book, but there is too much going on - too many characters with confusing pasts (hard to determine what is true and what other characters lie/misrepresent about each other). I never really grew to like Virginia - she's so noncommittal, hesitant, and seemingly frail - but (maybe?) strong. I didn't really buy into the love affair between Virginia and Simon (she, too hesitant; he, to quickly "in love" with her).A few of the events in the book were never fully explained: What really happened to Virginia that moonless night on the beach? Why was she given the medication she was given at Maitland? Mr. Marshall's role in the story? The revelation, at the end, of Virginia's father? Lydia's role in the entire book? I read the book not really all that interested in the characters, but wondering what would happen in the end.I also found what seem to be a few editing mistakes: page 105 - Virginia is sitting with Hazel to her left, Johnson to her right - but then Green starts speaking to Virginia. Chapter 29 - the date given is July 22 - yet chapters 28 and 30 take place on July 25.. Did we go back in time for a moment? It seems as if the story is simply continuing, from the hotel in Cocoa (Chapter 28) to the highway outside Winter Park (Chapter 29).All in all, the book is entertaining - I enjoyed the setting - the time and place make me want to read more of Beatriz Williams' books - but I hope the next B.W. book I read is more like the engaging, colorful, and interesting Along the Infinite Sea.

I really enjoyed her books "Tiny Little Thing" and "A Certain Age" but I did not enjoy this book as much as the others. I felt it dragged quite a bit and parts of it were confusing as it vaulted between time periods.I did like the twist involving Simon, Samuel and Clara and did not see parts of that twist coming so the element of surprise was good. However the ending left me totally confused as I have no idea who arrives with Marshall at the end of the book. I did look up online to see if I had missed something in the book that would explain the ending and the only thing I saw was to read her book "Wicked City" to find out the identity of the arrivals. Personally, I found that suggestion a bit frustrating.

''Romance and mystery, war and Prohibition, infidelity and murder, inheritance and lies . . . Williams spins a good, spirited yarn.'' --Kirkus ReviewsFor me it was more a nightmarish yarn!!!! Oh yes it had all the above, but it felt as if it were a nightmare spinning out of control. Not my type of book unfortunately, because I bought it having read other more enjoyable novels written by Ms. Williams. I'm sure there will be other novels written by her, I'll just have to be less trusting of the reviews and more judicious in my choice! To make matters worse, the ending left you hanging in the balance, assuring the reader there would be a sequel. Indeed, if that is the case, I will borrow it from the library (if I even do that)!

I am completely clueless about the ending! The last 20pages had so many " twists" to the plot I was loosing which character was which until by the ending I didn't even care.

Read and loved all the other Beatriz Williams books and was so excited about reading this one. Sadly this one is not like the others. The story is confusing, with lots of unanswered questions. None of the characters were particularly engaging or likeable, and like others I also struggled to believe the love story. A big 'meh' from me.

I hadn't read Ms. Williams last book, A Certain Age, yet, but I knew I had to do that before I read this book because her characters always make peek appearances in future books. I really need a detailed family tree of connections, please. But, I was really glad I did. While I really liked the characters of Sophie and Octavian in A Certain Age, the story itself didn't keep me on my toes like Cocoa Beach did. The entire time I was reading Cocoa Beach, I was unsure whether Simon was good or bad. Would he be Virginia's one true love or her huge mistake. I love how the trials of her childhood (that we learned about in Certain Age), came back to haunt her and her choices in this book. It really kept me on my toes until the last moment. As always, you get drawn in to the time period that Ms. Williams writes about and into her characters lives as if they were your next door neighbor. This was a thoroughly enjoyable and well written summer read.

From the Inside Flap

"The book demonstrates a rigorous analysis of the social character of religion in light of historical changes and enduring cultural practices. Focusing on the Yoruba of Nigeria and in the Diaspora, Peel examines the role of culture-specific factors in the transmission and reception of Christianity and Islam in Nigeria, setting out a convincing case for how the cultural past shapes and is shaped by contexts and circumstances. The book uses comparative analysis to engage the 'doctrinal' system of religion in relation to its concrete and dynamic expression, providing guidelines for a wider application for that approach to the study of religion in other parts of the world. The essays are lucid and probing, a work of real skill and erudition, and a critical standard of scholarship."—Lamin Sanneh, D. Willis James Professor of World Christianity and Professor of History at Yale Divinity School "This superb collection of essays brings together John Peel’s fifty years’ of research and reflection on religion in Yorubaland, and then goes further, pushing into previously untrodden ground. It presents a comprehensive view of some of the biggest issues, and yet is informed and illustrated throughout with meticulously researched  empirical detail. It is thus able convincingly to counter a number of prevailing misconceptions and generalisations about Yoruba culture and history. It is a revivifying shot in the arm for comparatism, and an invitation to think afresh about the relations between Christianity, Islam and orisa-religion both within Nigeria and in the wider world."—Karin Barber, Professor of African Cultural Anthropology at the University of Birmingham "Three great religious traditions are brilliantly united in path-breaking analyses that are cogently grounded in the long history and diverse experiences of the Yoruba, including current manifestations. Powerfully communicating an unparalleled understanding of religious conversion, education, progress, modernity, new movements in Christianity and Islam, religious co-existence and violence, this great book restores value and merit both to comparative methodology and the historical approach, while uncompromisingly affirming the centrality of religion to all aspects of society."—Toyin Falola, President of the African Studies Association at the University of Texas at Austin and editor of Christianity and Social Change in Africa: Essays in Honor of J.D.Y. Peel

Aldous Huxley, take on spirituality and the base of all religions as seen through the eyes of saints and spiritual leaders. It's a life changing beautifully written book. Aldous Huxley is one of the greatest minds of our time. (As an advice, this was my first spiritual book outside the Bible, so it was kind of a Perennial Philosophy crash course for me. Some words are difficult to understand, so it's better to have a background on other religions to fully understand.)

This is a book that I think I will be referencing back to for the rest of my life. If you basically want to understand the entire perspective of a Western thinker on the commonalities of Eastern religion and mysticism as well as Christian mystic thought, this is the book. Think of it as the complete tutorial on what people *think* they're saying when they utter the cliche "I'm not religious but I'm spiritual." Now if a person were truly that, and very intelligent as well, then this book explains how they might think about God, self, universe, time, idolatry, salvation, truth, good, evil, immortality, mortification, charity, prayer... yeah, you name it everything you've stuffed in a closet in the back of your mind and called it 'religion' is presented here from the mystic point of view and collected wisdom of multiple 'religions'.This might properly be called, at least I will, the set of ultimate goals for the self, or perhaps the self-less perfection of the realization of the divine in the individual and the purpose of all human consciousness. I'm not used to speaking this way, it will take me some time to get through all of the material in this course of study, but I can feel it working on me.Several years ago I wrote that all I care about is wisdom. This is true. But one tends to think of wisdom as an attribute of the self. The Perennial Philosophy extends that challenge beyond the self (and yet within the self) towards the human infinite. So instead of the pursuit and capture of wisdom like a trophy to put on your mantle and show off, the Perennial Philosophy explains that this is an attainment of psychic, spiritual as well as intellectual dimensions. There's some speculation in this which is especially clunky in the dated volume which contemporaries more well versed in psychology will easily spot. Also Huxley had been taken in by claims of faith healing and ESP that should not be taken seriously, but he seems to understand this. Also the book gets a bit murky in dealing with the concepts of time vis a vis Time and Eternity. And yet the book becomes quite persuasive in describing how nations and religions and philosophies that deal with reality in progressive time rather than in eternal timelessness, inevitably make bloody violent sacrifices to time (God the destroyer of all things, in time).Huxley presents a convincing case for the unification of purposeful thought in this volume by taking contextualized quotes from a variety of wise ancients and mystics. It puts, for me, God back where God should belong in all thought, and the discipline of finding God central in human moral purpose.I am convinced that this is the kind of material that is central to the human experience. It clears up a lot of things.

This book is nothing short of a masterpiece. Not only because it's content is brilliant, but because Huxley put it together with such brightness, that only a genius mind could do it. The Perennial Philosophy is a manual for anyone interested in Eastern Philosophical and Religious Thought. It goes deep inside the heart and teachings of the most influential Mystics that ever lived. The book is practical, clear and detailed, covering important subjects that would take many students years to collect from several different sources.Huxley proves brilliantly the Unity, Truth and Wisdom behind most religions. They all share a common source and ground that passes from faith, repentance and death to self into a divine nature of pure love and joy. He covers topics such as "Personality, Sanctity, Divine Incarnation, God in the World, Charity, Truth, Grace and Free Will, Good and Evil, Rituals", etc. So many important topics for one interesting in pursuing a divine path with a sincere heart toward God. Here are just a few quotes to inspire you to read this book:"Liberation cannot be achieved except by the perception of the identity of the individual spirit with the universal spirit""The best that can be said for ritualistic legalism is that it improves conduct. It does little , however, to alter character and nothing of itself to modify consciousnesses""What could begin to deny self, if there were not something in man different from self?""Love seeks no cause beyond itself and no fruit; it is its own fruit, its own enjoyment.""To the extent that there is attachment to "I", "Me" and "Mine", there is not attachment to, and therefore no unitive knowledge of, the divine ground""Everything is ours, provided that we regard nothing as our property""To find or know God in reality, by any outward proofs, or by anything but by God himself made manifest and self-evident in you, will never be your case either here or hereafter. For neither God, nor heaven, nor hell, nor the devil, nor the world, and the flesh, can be any otherwise knowable in you, or by you, but by their own existence and manifestation in you. And all pretended knowledge of any of these things, beyond or without this self-evident sensibility of their birth within you, is only such knowledge of them, as the blind man hath of that light, that never entered into him.""You are as holy as you wish to be""if most of us remain ignorant of ourselves, it is because self-knowledge is painful and we prefer the pleasures of illusion.""Turning to God without turning from Self"- the formula is absurdly simple; and yet, simple as it is, it explains all the follies and iniquities committed in the name of religion"Enjoy the book!

There are 2 items that are necessary for a successful religion. First is a moral code or high standard of living, the second is a purpose to life inherent in the future, whether the present life future or the eternal future. This provides an additional capacity of long term stability. So it is with the long-lasting of world's religions, while the others have a basis of sand and eventually dissipate. This is excellent study for a depth in religion thought.

This is a book that reveals the basic development of spirituality without regard to religions. It could be thought of as the backbone of religions without the limitations. It is a scholarly work but could be of interest to anyone seeking a higher way.

This is a must have classic on our shared human values and philosophy. Aldous Huxley is a superb writer, who has applied all his skills in presenting to us the timeless shared ideas that can be found in multiple cultures and faiths throughout the world. His insights can help to heal the wounds of division and alienation that cause so much unnecessary suffering in the world today. This book should be required reading for every teacher and preacher.

This was a good read. I won't give you a synopsis of the book as you can read it above. I will say that I read almost all the books my pre-teens read to make sure that they are suitable for their ages. My daughters both enjoyed this book as did I.

I loved this book. Such a touching story of loss, change, and grieving. I highly recommend this book to young adults and up!

The company that l work make this book And had to have it

This is a companion book to Love, Lucas. That one was about the sister of boy who died from cancer. This one was about the girlfriend of the same boy.Well, they never actually were officially boyfriend/girlfriend, but she lived next door to him for years and loved him forever. They only confessed just before he died. Sadness. And so this story picks up a few months later and she is still dealing with his death and his loss.So she immerses herself into her love and hobby of mountain bike racing. There's a new-ish boy (it's been about a year since he moved in) that has bugged her since he arrived and who actually took over her position as captain of the bike team. She does not like him.Which means, of course, that they will connect! And so that's the love story. He's had his eye on her since the beginning but she has been annoyed by him. All that changes of course, and he is not what she thought he was. It's a blast to read/watch unfold.Meanwhile, she has her family life situation to deal with too, which is that her mom is suffering from early onset Alzheimers. More sadness. Yes.But despite all this sadness, I totally enjoyed this book. Fast and easy to read. Lovely romance. Cute characters. Fun look at mountain biking, which... why would anyone do this? CRAZY!

Thank you to Sky Pony Press for providing me a copy of book in exchange for a fair review.Emmy hasn't been dealing with things well, she quit the mountain bike team after Lucas's death and hasn't won first place in a long time. Just when things are starting to look up she finds out that her mom has been diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer. Now she is trying to navigate her feelings for Cole, her place on the team and the reality of losing her mom as she knows her. Then an accident almost changes everything and Emmy has to decide what is really important.I am going to note that I didn't realize this was a sequel or a follow up until after I started reading it. Love, Lucas is the first book. However, I didn't feeling like I was missing anything by not having read it first. Emmy is a passionate mountain biker who is still kind of reeling from Lucas dying a year ago.Lucas is Emmy's first love, but they really never had a relationship. She never told him how she felt until right before he died after he revealed that he had been in love with her for years, but he was too afraid to tell her. Cole moved to Utah during that time frame and has only been Emmy's friend up until now. He is helping her train for her rematch against Whitney. She feels more than a little guilty about her feelings for Cole, but she cautiously begins to deal with the past and the present until the moment that everything changes. This was a quick easy read. It had me in tears several times, and I enjoyed the book and it's message a lot.

Sky Pony Press is starting to be my go-to publisher for young adult books. Their newest addition, SWITCHING GEARS, a follow up to LOVE, LUCAS by Chantele Sedgwick, is a wonderful example of what I think makes a great young adult romance. The writing is easy-flowing and never bogs down, the action is exciting and plentiful, and the lead characters have realistic flaws and grow throughout the story. And, of course, the heroine gets her HEA.Seventeen-year-old Emmy Martin loves mountain biking. It's what makes her feel alive. As the story begins, she still mourns the death of her best friend, neighbor, and secret love Lucas, who died from cancer the month before. She strains to finish a race in first place but is passed by her nemesis, Whitney. Irritated at always coming in behind Whitney, she asks for a rematch. A cocky Cole offers to help her train, but Emmy chooses to do it by herself. She's afraid to get close to too many people, since she fears they might leave her. So she keeps only Kelsie as her friend and confidant.Kelsie is Emmy's best friend and an exceptional one, too. She refuses to let Emmy wallow in her sadness, constantly pushing and prodding her to get out and enjoy life. She makes Emmy laugh, and she encourages her to give Cole a chance. She is perfect BFF material. And then there's Cole. Hot, cocky and a mountain bike racing fiend. Emmy doesn't like him at first, especially after he's named captain of their school's mountain biking team, the one she started the previous summer. She's wary of him when he offers to train her for the rematch with Whitney. So Emmy turns him down. He continues to try and help her and eventually asks her out. He's supportive, treats her well and likes to tease her. But most of all, he cares enough to challenge Emmy to be her very best. The story includes issues of abandonment, grief, self-doubt, guilt, and believing in yourself. It has funny parts mixed in with some sad passages, but it's a wonderful story overall. The only con is that it ended too soon. (I would have liked to see the last chapter expanded to include some of what happened through the year before the Epilogue occurs.) So I'm giving the book a strong 4.5 stars.SWITCHING GEARS is a sweet romance that should appeal to younger teenagers, but older teenagers and adults will enjoy the story too. And it's a book you'll want to keep on your shelf to revisit from time to time.If You Like This, You May Like: LOVE, LUCAS and NOT YOUR AVERAGE FAIRY TALE by Chantele Sedgwick, LIFE BEFORE by Michele Bacon, THAT BURNING SUMMER by Lydia Syson, BY YOUR SIDE by Kasie West, FIRST YEAR by Sarah Hocut, STOLEN KISSES by Kerttu-Liis Kiili, SAINT ANYTHING and JUST LISTEN by Sarah Dessen* Read my other reviews on the Blue Moon Mystery Saloon blog.** An e-galley was provided by Sky Pony Press and Edelweiss for an honest review.

This series is the best read I have found in the last 15 or 20 years!it has drama, it has suspense, it has action, it has sadness, it has happiness, it has humor, there are so many things that this book has going for it! yes it may be classified as a children's book, but I am not the only adult to read & enjoy & be hooked on this series of books. From page one, it grabs your attention & it never lets go till the end...but then it is really not the end because when you begin to read the next book, it too, gets you hooked from Page 1.I highly recommend this book & the series(22 books in all) to anyone, adult or younger, who likes a great story of how the hero saves the day with his charm, his humor & his bravery.

A great tale in a great series, the only detractor is that in actually story chronology it doesn't line up perfectly with its predecessors but its still very good.

This is quite possibly the best book in the entire "Redwall" series. It is set in a time and place before the founding of Redwall Abbey, and has all the elements of a good story. It has conflict, treachery, romance, adventure, and what might even be perceived as a dash of satire at points. Above all, his characters are more original and memorable in this than in most other "Redwall" books (particularly Felldoh and Grumm). These elements, combined with a unique ending, make for a tale that is equally enjoyable to readers of all ages. In short, this is the mark of a great author.

The beginning of it all a journey through the years since I was a child reading these books this was the first book I ever picked out myself and it got lost in one of the many moves in my life. This book in my view is the best next to moss flower

My 4th grade 10 yr old son is reading this book now. He can not put it down! I am so thankful for the Redwall series - it has ignited a love of reading for my boy! When he started the series with Book 1, he would read it over 3 weeks. He is now getting through them in 1 week. I love catching him reading & he usually has a smile on his face, enjoying the story. Thank you Brian Jacques! Just ordered Books 7-9!

Newer reprint of the original paper back Redwall books, so if you are a collector trying to complete your collection, it may not look right on your shelf. On another note, the only ones I've been able to find (reasonable prices), so great to get new readers exposed to Redwall.

I first discovered this actual book in 7th grade at a book fair. It got me out of having to read many books for the book program but got me lost for a month at a time. Now, at 32 I've rebought the series and am reading them to my sons. I love the different dialect, the descriptions of characters and places. Truly, my favorite! ♡

The Redwall series of books is well written and perfect for both young and young-at-heart readers. It’s a fantasy set full of adventures of good versus evil, coming of age, finding bravery and friendship, reveling in poetry and song, and feasting as if at the end of a ten season famine! Brian Jacques crafted wonderful friends and heroes ate Redwall Abbey, and you’ll enjoy meeting them again and again!

If you're reading this the answer is YES...this is the book you want to own. I knew the photos would be stunning. What I didn't expect was Afshin's poignant, beautifully written memories of Prince. I'll cherish these as much as his photos because together they reveal Prince...the man. And that's a beautiful portrait. In a few photos of Prince and Manuela in unguarded moments, Afshin captures Prince's tenderness. And yet, these shots are never voyeuristic. I get a sense of being invited in, as Prince clearly invited Afshin in. Then there are the iconic shots and private party montages! Could we ask for more? Yes - I still love books and this one is a work of art...the choice and quality of the photos, the layout, and the book jacket with it's lovely sheen and embossed print. And then there's the photo of Prince on the back jacket. There could not have been a more perfect choice...so bittersweet. It gets me every single time I see it...a fond farewell. In the intro Afshin says he wanted to "honor the memory of a man who gave his heart and soul to so many people". He's accomplished that and so much more. Thank you, Afshin.

The One Nite Alone time period from roughly 2001-2003 is my favorite time period from Prince. My favorite albums that go #1 and #2 for me are One Nite Alone Piano and Voice and The Rainbow Children. I have spent COUNTLESS HOURS and coins collecting every single artifact from this time period…like thousands of dollars of buying vinyl, art, and media, and dozens upon dozens of boots from this time.So you can imagine my EXTREME EXCITEMENT knowing that Afshin Shahidi was the official photographer of this time period and knowing he was putting out a book. This was MY BOOK that I pre-ordered as soon as it was announced! I even spent a good chunk of money on his Prince in Hawaii book as well because it was fringe my time period.I was avoiding spoilers left and right that were being posted to social media. I wanted my experience to be a shock with each turn of the page…an emotional experience….a cathartic experience…a “Princely” experience. NO SPOILERS I WANT TO HAVE REACTIONS WITH EACH TURN OF THE PAGE!I had plans…for 8 months…I would create environment, candles, incense from Salish Winds, his preferred incense place, wine, my favorite album One Nite Alone playing in the background…Salish winds essential oils in my bath even. THIS WAS ABOUT TO BE A TRUE PRINCE EXPERIENCE.I read the book by candlelight.I cannot tell you how much of a special experience this was.I laughed….I didn’t cry…but what I felt the most was MOTIVATION.I’d had a rough day at work, and was actually considering waiting until I had a less stressful day so I could be fully present in this experience I’d planned for 8 months, but I’m glad I just did it.I jokingly call Prince my “Fairy God Boyfriend” or my “Professor” but this book…solidified him as my Professor.Strong feelings of “I am not doing enough” and “it’s 100% okay to have high standards of performance and not feel bad about that” and “just because ‘society’ has a lower bar of acceptability…and you know your own bar is higher than that, doesn’t mean you can relax. Perform at YOUR level of standard no matter what.”Where before I was nervous about this book because it covered my favorite era and of course Prince is beautiful…it wasn’t about that at all…for me it was a kick in the butt to get busy..not living, but WORKING. He spent his whole life WORKING without compromise…."Get on the boat" or get left.Having that kind of work ethic is okay. Never be ashamed about that. WORK.I am soooo soooo motivated now….you only get one life. You only get one first time….so make the most of it. Never skimp on opportunities to live. Always “do the most”. You deserve nothing less that that…and you should never expect anything less than the best.Thank you Afshin for conveying this as a witness to his genius. And thank you Professor Nelson, for providing this example. Are YOU willing to do the work?

I was "curious" to read this book as I had, myself, worked with Prince for over 20 years (our years did not overlap). What Afshin has done in addition to absolutely beautiful photographs (I'm an avid amateur photographer myself) is capture Prince in a way that simply hasn't been done. It was obvious that Prince was VERY comfortable with Afshin and, therefore, showed sides of himself that few saw - especially the playful Prince. In addition to the photographs (I LOVED the moody one taken on a back street in Panama, Afshin has woven a story showing the trust and friendship that developed between them.A wonderful book that deserves to be in ANY Prince fan's library -- in fact, anyone who enjoys celebrity photography should also buy this as the photography (not to sound redundant) is absolutely marvelous.

For the last 18 months it’s been hard for a rabid Prince fan like me to find joy, and when I ordered “Prince: A Private View” I knew I’d been in for a treat (Afshin Shahidi is a top-notch photographer who did amazing work with Prince, as we see in the book). There’s no question about it: this book has some of the most stellar photography I’ve seen. Absolutely stunning, and blows all those other post-Prince photography books away.Reading “Prince: A Private View” sent me to Prince’s heaven, with each page bringing me back to memories of tours, concerts, and music. It was good to feel the giddy-obsession I once had of Prince without breaking down in tears, but there’s always “Man, wish he were here to see this.”If you’re looking for that perfect book that embodies who Prince truly was, this is it.

This is not the first book on Prince that I have purchased, but it IS the only one I sat and went through, cover to cover. I'm a HUGE Prince fan from day one and won't hesitate to criticize when it comes to him. The pictures in this book are amazing, but what I really enjoyed was the stories Afshin tells throughout the book. If you are an open and receptive person, you can feel the love and respect Afshin has for Prince. But even of you're not, this book is a must have for any Prince fan. I am so hoping Afshin does not only The B-Sides, but many books in the future. I know he has enough pics and definitely enough memories. Thx Afshin for sharing YOUR personal relationship, memories and personal glimpse into his life with us.

I wanted to love this. In part, the story is just hard. Lucy Maud Montgomery did not have an easy life and for someone who wrote such beloved characters, I couldn’t help wishing her story was different, even though I have read her story before. I think the book was well-researched, and the illustrations were beautiful. I believe the book has a younger intended audience, and it is written in a way that suggests it is for children, but some of the content would require care even for adults. I want to give a fair review, but I wish that the writing style contained more beauty, more flow... I think that any time we read L.M. Montgomery, even if we are reading another author’s words about her, the expectation is higher.I would recommend this book to the person looking for a factual account of her life, but not to someone who is looking for more of the worlds she shared in her books.

I purchased this book as a gift for my girlfriend, who is a big L. M. Montgomery fan, and she absolutely loved it. She couldn't stop talking about it, in fact. She loved the writing style of the biography and found the book to be very interesting.

This was interesting and informative. It is very matter of fact and easy to read. Also, the illustrations are really cute. I would recommend to anyone interested in learning basic facts about L.M. Montgomery's life.

Wonderful biography of one of the most famous authors in children's literature. This book is for anyone who has read and loved "Anne of Green Gables," and for anyone who hasn't even heard of it. Rosenberg vividly presents Maud with all her struggles and triumphs.

I really enjoyed this book. I learned things about L.M. Montgomery that I never knew before. Ms. Rosenberg did a wonderful job researching and writing it.

The author of Anne of Green Gables; wanted to hear the author’s life story after taking a tour to Prince Edward Island Canada.Very good book and well done story.

Dragged on

*I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*Instead of consuming this book, I feel like this book consumed me. I fell into it and was wholeheartedly immersed in L. M. Montgomery’s life. Even while not reading it, I still felt as though my heart and mind were with L. M. Montgomery. Certainly, I couldn’t stop talking about it, as my husband could attest. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been completely absorbed in a book, and reading this was such a wonderful experience.L. M. Montgomery, or “Maud,” as she was called, is absolutely one of my favorite authors ever. I’ve read a good chunk of her works (and she was a prolific writer!), so to learn more about her experiences and what inspired her stories–especially those of Anne Shirley and Emily–was a lovely experience to begin with. It’s clear to see that Rosenberg loves Montgomery and her stories as well, because reading this as almost as close as reading a memoir, it was so filled with empathy and emotion. I felt like I was in a conversation with a friend, talking about another friend. It was a sort of: “Did you hear about Maud? She published a book!” kind of thing. I was joyous over Maud’s triumphs and saddened over how much loss and sadness she had within her life, but it’s a comfort to know that for all her struggles, she loved her writing, and those stories live on for us today thanks to her.Rosenberg gives a comprehensive overview of Maud’s life, from early childhood to late adulthood. I love that she was able to include direct quotes from the personal journal of L. M. Montgomery, which added a great touch of personality and authenticity to situation. It’s nicely paced–I never felt as though too much or too little time was spent on one thing. I LOVED some of the humorous anecdotes told. L. M. Montgomery could be one funny lady. What I most appreciated, however, was the frank discussion of mental illness. Both Montgomery and her husband seem to have had some forms of depression and anxiety, and I am so grateful to Rosenberg for tackling that head-on. The more we talk about these things, the more we share both the struggles and successes of people who live with this diseases, the more we normalize them and are able to seek help in managing them. It’s especially important for young people who might not know how to deal with what they’re feeling and what they may be experiencing to know that even those we look up to struggle with the same thing. I’m so glad this was included. This biography is magical, truly. I felt completely transported reading it and it’s been one of my absolutely favorite reads this year. Every Montgomery fan will find something to love about it, and I’m so glad I was able to learn more about L. M. Montgomery’s life and experiences. Thank you so much to Liz Rosenberg for writing this and Candlewick Press for publishing this. It’s extraordinary.
