For the experienced developer looking to learn what is new on the Java EE 6 platform, this book provides a concise and approachable overview. The short handbook is a welcome change from yet another 550 page tutorial that requires two months of your life. I read and re-read many of the chapters at a casual pace over a week. The author gives us just enough to understand what is new in the platform. Anyone who has been around a while on the Java platform can then use his or her favorite resources when doing a deeper dive and / or applying the technology.I don't think this is a book for the average Java EE beginner. The author assumes quite a bit of knowledge about the basics of the Java EE platform. This allows the book to be concise for those who have experience with the platform, but will probably leave novices completely confused.Typical of technical books on the Kindle, you will find a few areas where you simply cannot get to all the data in the charts, and many examples of source code are a mess to read. The Kindle format for technical books continues to be disappointing. However, this book fares better than most as it largely text.
I'll be brief, since the book is.1. This book is small. Very small. It really does fit in a back pocket.2. It covers each part of Java EE 6 very briefly; no tutorial, just the exacting info.3. It is not suitable for developers new to Java EE.4. The details are clear, and the book always gives you paths to more information (JSR links, etc).I'd recommend this book be used WITH the Java EE Tutorial [...]When you combine the two, you can work through them; educating yourself on Java EE 6. You then have the pocket guide sitting at your desk for checkingthings out, or reviewing before going into a discussion or more research.
I am a solution architect, and was interested in some JEE concepts. The book is a good choice for this purpose: brief and clear explanation, provided with a simple example so you get a good understanding "how to make it happen".If you are a JEE developer, you might need another more detailed resource to get all your questions answered.
I liked the brevity. Arun covers what's new and important in Java EE 6 with just enough detail to understand things. This is just what I wanted, a quick read to come up to speed.
Having largely ignored Java EE over the years in favour of other lighter weight frameworks such as Spring, I recently discovered how far this technology has come in terms of ease of use and wanted something to get me up to speed quickly. Arun Gupta has some good tutorial YouTube videos so I gave this Pocket Guide a go. I was not disappointed. He clearly explains the various technologies that make up Java EE from JPA to JSF, covering not only the obvious need-to-know stuff but also some of the more detailed techniques. As I play with Java EE I find myself referring to this book a lot.Highly recommended.
It is what it says it is; a pocket guide. Java EE has so many corners very few folks can just learn all of it, and sometimes you need a kickstart before even your IDE can prompt you. This might just be that book for you.
It is rare to see a book that is a good read and covers a technical topic in depth. If you want to learn about the new features of Java EE6 (and believe me some are good) in an easy and efficient manner you cannot get a better book than this in the market.
