I like DeLorme Gazetteers as they are muchbetter than any app I know at discovering be places to explore ance find your way around new areas. Especially if you are in rural areas where many apps are messed up. Plus the books done run out of power when you get it most. I love apps but like a good paper map as well.
I had a 1996 version of the Illinois Atlas and Gazetteer and as you can imagine, it was really used and beat up. I was very glad to get a newer version and updated. Unfortunately, these gazetteers are no longer published and that is a shame because there is nothing like looking at a map, a big map and looking to see where you can go. Google Maps doesn't suffice or compare for this type of use. I guess that is progress, maybe.
I buy a lot of these, almost all 50 states, but with Illinois they drop the ball big time. The other Delorme atlases provide very good detail. Why this 1 state atlas (Illinois) is so terrible is weird.
The DeLorme Atlas and Gazeteer for Illinois is like DeLorme's other mapping products: practical and useful. This edition provides 1:150,000 coverage of the entire State of Illinois, along with specialized listings of its various state parks, recreation areas, campgrounds, trails, and other possibilities for outside fun, and there are more than you might expect. The map coverage is especially useful for backcountry Illinois, away from the major urban areas. The gazetteer makes it easy to find any and every village and town. The atlas is less useful in the crowded urban around Chicago, where only the major road networks are visible at a useful level of detail.The Illinois Atlas and Gazetteer is highly recommended to those travelers planning to explore the open spaces located between Chicago and St. Louis.
This is not a complete book. Pages 1 to 32, then goes back to page 25. Pages 25 to 32!then skips to page 41. Pages 41 to 56 then skips to 65. Pages 65 to 72 then goes back to page 65. Then pages 65 to 96 What are going to do about this. Not happy
I expected this map to be the same style as the other Atlas and Gazetteer books we've gotten. It's newer than the Missouri map we have, but is very disappointing. Many of the smaller roads are not labeled at all. Some are labeled with numbers only, when the signs use a name instead of posting the number. I count on maps like this to navigate through rural areas, and this map was quite a disappointment. Please update and add the names to ALL of the roads!
This is the second one I have, the first was worn out from use. I've found a lot of alternate routes using this book. For me it's indispensable.
I have the DeLorme atlases for all 50 states. They are high quality and super detailed. I love geography and am a map collector and I highly recommend them
