My impression was that this is not a good book for the absolute beginner. Blender contains two different rendering engines and the author is not always clear about which one he is describing. Also, I found the index was rather light on details. Often I could not find the particular Blender function, hotkey, or whatever I was looking for and had to page through the book hoping I would come across some commentary on it. The book is O.K for a brief introduction but you will need other resources to really learn the program.
I'm disappointed too. The book has too much "fluff". The publisher/author wanted to get to 500 pages so they stretched the content. Takes too long to learn a concept with few examples. I'm already familiar with Blender and wanted a good reference work. How do you "Bake Animation"? Can't find out here because "Bake" is not in the index. The online Blender Manual is a much better resource. At $39 ($24.45 AP), this book is way overpriced. Sorry.
The writer's style is a perfect mix of light humor and detailed instruction. This book made the ever confusing Blender interface SO easy for me to understand. In particular the way he relates each functional hotkey to it's counterpart across different functionality was extremely helpful. Glad I finally picked this up!

Makes a difficult subject not so difficult.
Very, very helpful overview for blender noobs. Guides you into clear understanding of how to get basic thing done.Publisher length constraints make any deeper or wider exploration not possible. I am a verysatisfied first time blenderer (I'm sure that's wrong. Safari wanted 'blunderer'. Perhaps they were right.)I got up and running from no blender of any kind ever, to building things, importing into Unity, withmaterials and textures, because of this guy. Considering links, online supplementals, sure was worthit for me.
It helps, but the Blender interface is not user friendly, so the book can only take you so far.
Excellent Starter book for the novice wishing to learn how to use this free great program on 3D modeling. The book takes you from the first basic steps through taking the objects into animation. I would recommend this to all
