My tween daughter is obsessed with the Broadway show, Hamilton. She's constantly singing it, which peaked my 5.5yo son's interest in learning more about the American Revolution and our Founding Fathers as well. I was thrilled to find a book that is at his independent/advanced reading level for him to engage in. He enjoyed learning about the different foods Thomas Jefferson popularized, since many of them are his favorites! The illustrations were fun, too. We liked this book so much, I have since purchased more books in this series (Alexander Hamilton, George Washington & Benjamin Franklin.)
My son loves the Step into Reading series. The stories are written in such a way to capture a child's attention, and conveys a ton of facts.
I enjoyed this book with my son, who has learning disabilities and needs books written in a simple style. The great thing about this book is that it gives a high-interest historical story that teaches on a number of levels. My son still talks about the "love apples"; it seemed to spark his interest in history as well as the story. I am glad for these types of books.
This book (and many others like it) have been a great find for my family. I am homeschooling a second-grader and these books have been the key to getting him interested in reading, and have become the foundation of our reading curriculum this year. Since we are studying American history, they are relevant, fun, and are about topics to which he can relate. His interest in both reading and history has increased, and he can't wait to get to the next book. At this point level 3 readers are easy for him, level 4 readers are just hard enough to be a challenge (but not too much) and level 5 readers will be tackled in the spring.Thomas Jefferson's Feast is great because you get to know the everyday T.J. and things that he liked. We found out that he was responsible for introducing things to this continent that we really love such as tomatoes and macaroni and cheese. My son loved the story.This book is great paired up with "A Prairie Dog for the President" about the Lewis and Clark expedition.
I go to the Step into Reading books first when purchasing non-fiction books for my classroom library. This book might be at the top of my list for enjoyable, informational text. This is a "good fit" book for most of my 1st grade readers. This book is filled with very interesting facts about our 3rd president.
I can't wait to read this book to my class this year. I would order from this company again.
