Review
"It is said that war is a means to political ends. Sandra Vea captures how innocent civilians and individual soldiers, like Masao Abe, were driven to have faith in the American dream, America’s democracy, and the hope that her system of justice would ultimately prevail . . . Rising Son is a fascinating and highly readable slice of history which should be told." —Lt Col Michael J. Yaguchi, USAF (Ret) Board of Directors and Executive Secretary, National Japanese American Memorial Foundation"Rising Son is a consideration of bigotry, loyalty, heroism, sacrifice and war—all the more riveting because it is a true story."—Barbara Lloyd McMichael, The Bookmonger

The tragedy of war goes deep and the lesson keeps getting taught on so many levels. If we can emerge with the wisdom, humility, and grace displayed by Masao, there is hope.
"Rising Son" by Sandra Vea (Feb. 2019), 320 pp., hardcover.. A book about the Japanese-American translator [SSG Masao Abe] during WWII while serving with the U.S.Military Intelligence Service (MIS).Partial comments from a book review by its author, Sandra Vea, in the Feb. 13, 2019 online HNN (History Network News):"Within the highly sensitive MIS operation was a deeper level of military strategy. A small fraction, as few as 250 of the 6,000 MIS soldiers, were embedded in [U.S.] infantry divisions and served directly in combat in the South Pacific. This was the case with [U.S.] Staff Sergeant Masao Abe, who was attached to the [U.S.] 81st Infantry Division...."Masao was assigned to various battalions as they moved through the [Japanese-held] islands of Angaur and Peleliu to secure caves, humanely interrogate captured Japanese soldiers, gather documents to be translated, and determine military strategy such as ground tactics and the location of Japanese Imperial base camps as well as supply lines...."Masao, an American citizen who had been raised for part of his childhood in Japan, was fluent in speaking, reading, and writing Japanese, and he was utilized to the fullest on battle lines..."As Masao recalled and shared his action-filled and sometimes poignant stories from World War II …. he, like thousands of other Nisei soldiers, served his country with honor while his extended family was interned, even imprisoned, back in the US."This book may be a slight revision of an earlier work titled: "Masao: A Nisei Soldier's Secret and Heroic Role in World War II" , also by Sandra Vea, (but Aug. 2016), 360 pp., paperback.
I'm surprised I had not heard about Masao before I saw this book. An interesting and easy read.
I really enjoyed this book.
