A friend who manages a bookstore tried to turn me on to this offering two years ago and it took me this long to get around to reading it. Now I'm kicking myself for not doing so earlier. "Lamb" is alternately touching, funny, thought-provoking and even inspirational. In an era where so much of what is published (or self-published) is utter crap, it's good to know there are still a few authors taking the time to craft brilliant, enjoyable stories.For the first time in a long time, I had a hard time putting a book down. This one cut into my sleep, but it was so worth it! I'm now reading another Moore book, "A Dirty Job," and I'm happy to report it also is excellent. I'm sure I'll be reading everything this author has in print within the next few months. One caveat, however: if you're a person with ... mmm ... something less than flexible religious convictions who's easily offended, you may want to give this one a miss. It's intended -- at least in part -- as parody, but I'm guessing not everyone is going to get the joke.

This story tries to imagine the big gap that occurs between Jesus' birth and his the years of public ministry. Told from the modern day perspective of Jesus' best friend, the book portrays the Messiah as that perfect kid you couldn't even hate because he is just too good. The book doesn't espouse any philosophy or dogma, but it also refrains from making fun of the beliefs of Judaism or Christianity in anything but an affectionate way. If you have an affection for religion without taking it too seriously, you might find this an enjoyable read. I sure did.

This book was given to me by my son-in-law. When I started reading it I did not understand why he would give me such a strange book? I could not get into it.But I did not want to disappoint him so I resolved to at least give it a try. Since I love audio books, I added audio to this book and voila, the book took a totally new meaning. I love the narrator Fisher Stevens and listening to him brought the book to live.The book is funny and sweet and strange and I loved Charlie Asher. The story takes place over number of years where newborn Sophie is growing up on top floor of Charlie’s second hand clothing store. She is being cared for by two immigrant ladies Chinese and Russian.The talent of Fisher Stevens is so great that all character voices and accents are tailored to the characters, recognizable and in case of babysitters very funny because they were so real sounding.Charlie Asher is identified as Beta male, which according to the book description is dependable, loyal, responsible and sensible individual. It sounds boring but Charlie is far from it – Charlie is a Death Merchant and Soul Collector.Since Charlies wife Rachel died right after Sophie was born, Charlie is raising her himself and she is the most important person in his life, but his job sometimes takes him away from Sophie under most unusual circumstances.The writing is very good. The dialogue between the different characters is so real and entertaining that it reminded me of my own family gatherings.All characters are worth mentioning – Lillie, the Goth girl; Ray, the retired disabled detective; Charlie’s sister Jane who can’t decide on her life partner and Charlie’s daughter Sophie, who just by saying word “kitty” makes people and animals disappear.And the ending did not disappoint.5 stars for the story and 5 stars for the narrator Fisher Stevens

As a Catholic I had some "hang ups" when I first read it. I even went as far to put it away and not read it anymore cause I was just SOOO sure I was right about things. I told the friend that recommended it to me that is was certainly NOT my cup of tea. He is not particularly spiritual or Christian. He told me this was the book that GOT him to read the whole bible. He laughed and cried through the whole book "Lamb" he said....So I put my "thoughts" on a shelf and read it. I laughed and I cried. I am heart broke the book is finished. The kind of heart broke that you feel when your favorites TV series has its last show of its last season and no more will be made EVER. How WILL you go on is how one feels. This book has gotten me to STUDY the bible more. When I come upon certain stories in the bible that were talked about in this book "Lamb", the stories Biff, Jesus childhood friend refers too, I laugh and remember Biffs spin on it cause he was supposedly there and he told it His way. It gives me the feeling of belonging that I feel I know something that no one else knows. I huger to read more of the bible now just to keep that feeling. Yes I know which is the real and which is from the book Lamb. I just like feeling of belonging now

I am a devout Christian...I also appreciate good writing and a person's effort and sense of humor. Moore has clearly done a lot of research into the Jewish ways of life and all sorts of things in the time period when Jesus lived. He said mixed it with some imagination and well meant humor. I loved the book! He went wild with it and i loved every minute of it...i know a lot of Christians might call it blasphemous but I think to that Jesus would say, "relax, take a chill pill"

it'd been a few years since i'd read a christopher moore book, and i knew i was ready for his absurd, heart-warming, over-the-top brand of comedy-horror, and i got everything i could have hoped for with a dirty job. here's the first sentence: "charlie asher walked the earth like an ant walks on the surface of water, as if the slightest misstep might send him plummeting through the surface to be sucked to the depths below." timid charlie asher of course winds up a merchant of death, like santa's elves, only for death. together with a few other merchants he meets, his infant daughter, sister, his employees at his thrift store, a cop, two hellhounds, and a mysterious tibetan mystic, charlie must figure out why darkness is descending upon san francisco. hilarious, wise, exciting, and filled with enough dark imagery to be perceived of as a cry for help, moore nonetheless manages to create a stirring romance and morbid journey to self-recovery. highly recommended.

Great autobiography of one of the greatest saddle bronc riders in the history of the sport. Ian Tysan, the Canadian singer & songwriter, wrote a song about Casey Tibbs that encapsolated his career. Casey was one of a kind as Ian said in his song, "there will never be another one like him" and there never has been. This book is a must read for anybody who's heard the name Casey Tibbs and wondered who he was.

I loved this book. It was a delightful read and I learned so much about Casey Tibbs. Some of the pranks he pulled made me laugh out loud and the end made me cry. I am now interested in reading more about the old timers in the rodeo world.

I finally got the full story of Casey Tibbs, and the time of his death.Good read

This was exactly the book I needed. I haven't been preparing meals at all (opting for little snacks like things dipped in peanut butter or hummus) and it was getting boring and unsatisfying. This book has recipes that I can make easily (and often ahead of time) and has introduced me to all sorts of meat-substitutes that I hadn't used before. Either because of the variety or the food, I've noticed my sugar cravings are lower and I've been able to pass on sweet snacks I wouldn't have been able to before. I have found several recipes in the first week of meal plans that I will make my staples. And I've lost a few pounds since I've started as well. 2 tips for new cooks:1. You don't need to bite off a meal plan of 21 new meals a week. I choose 2 or 3 of each type of meal at a time and focused on those. I got good at knowing how to make them, saved time by making double portions if possible for another meal, and was able to test and adjust meals that I didn't quite like to find ways that could make them better. This book is also going to last a lot longer then 5 weeks for me.2. Double the recipes to make 2 or more breakfasts and lunches at a time.For me, I just don't often have time for a full dinner. I often find that the free food in the office that I try not to eat kind of off-sets the calories I would eat for dinner. Not the most nutritious, but it was interesting to look at my eating patterns and see what really worked for me. Good luck!

I've made a ton of recipes from the book, and so far they've all been a hit! The book is comprehensive, easy to follow, and I've put it to good use since purchasing it. For a book aimed at folks thinking about eating more veggies and less meat, this book is oddly organized and difficult to approach.The first 70+ pages is discussion on various food types, theory, an only a bit of practical information related to prep and cooking. That's interesting, but for me, it's length is intimidating.The book is organized as if readers will be embarking upon a 5-week program to prepare every recipe in the book - an unlikely proposition I think. The recipes are grouped into five "weeks", with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack items interleaved, along with weekly shopping lists (useless unless assume you'll prepare all 28 recipes for that week).But there is no useful index of the recipes by any other grouping anywhere, they are only included in the lengthy full book index, alphabetically among the theory, terms, cooking implements, etc. If you can remember the exact name of a recipe, no problem. Otherwise...good luck.I'm not about to embrace five weeks (or even 1) of planned meals - I just want to learn a bit and do some experimenting. Not sure if this book will help me do that.

In the first 8 weeks I lost 22 lbs and significantly reduced my cholesterol numbers. I recommend it to anyone who wants to start a new way of eating.

One of the best things about this book is that every recipe is for one person. It's much easier to multiply ingredient quantities for more than one person than it is to try to divide ingredient quantities in recipes which have been written for four to twenty people. There are meal plans, recipes and shopping lists for five weeks. The recipes are flexible as indicated by the title of the book and consist of only five main ingredients. Dessert recipes for each meal are included. Whether you're a meat eater or a vegetarian these recipes will work for you. Also included are cooking times for almost all grains, including those we don't eat very often. This book is full of important information; I recommend it highly.

I am still working through this book , but appreciate the recipes are made to serve one. I have tried some unusual combinations that are very good which I would have been hesitant to try as a larger recipe. I will write more after a month.I like they you can substitute chicken or salmon in some of the recipes.

I decided to recently rewatch dragonball, and as I am now in my early 20's I became aware of the heavy influence of Asian mysticism through out the show. When I discovered there was a book that explains the mysticism within dragonball I felt as if I had found a treasure chest. Within this treasure chest of a book is a rich esoteric history of everything that went into the show. It paints a picture of how amazing Dragonball truly is!

Focusing on the early life of Akira Toriyama and the cultural origins of Dragon Ball, volume 1 of Dragon Ball Culture delves deep into the past and introduces the reader to the classic fable Journey to the West and how it's cultural incluences helped to shape the Dragon World into what we know and love it to be. Jam packed with information, it's a fantastic work that allows us to take a peek into the mind of Akira Toriyama and see the fantastic cultural influences that lie just beneath the surface.

I arrived at this tome in a very interesting manner. While I was aware of Derek Padula's other work, "It's Over 9,000!" I actually stumbled upon "Dragon Ball Culture" by pure happenstance. While watching "Death Battle" on You Tube one day I noticed a particular match of interest. For those of you who don't know, 'Death Battle' is a series put forth by production studio ScrewAttack! where they pit famous characters from the world of fiction and see who comes out on top. The guys at ScrewAttack! really do their homework and, as if they were fighting a legal lawsuit, they contend fact against fact to see which fictional character would win a supposed 'Death Battle.' On this particular match the opponents happened to be none other than Superman vs. Goku. As reference for Goku's statistics they used several resources, one being thedaoofdragonball.com. This is Derek Padula's very own website as most of you already know. A quick click had me swiftly informed about his forays into Eastern culture. Coincidentally, at this time I myself was also just wrapping up the third book in W.J.F. Jenner's translation of "Journey to the West." What luck! The perfect companion piece to my own journey to the East!Volume 1 bridges the gaps for any Westerner who has only just vague ideas about that mysterious and foreign region we call the Far East. What Mr. Padula has done here is monumental. His 11 year trek to uncover all the minutiae that holds the magnificent tale of Dragon Ball together is quite profound. Having a deep interest in Dragon Ball myself I have scoured to look for places that may shed some insights onto how the 'people from the East' look at this story with very little to find on the matter. "Dragon Ball Culture" answers many questions that only diehards like myself would ever consider. So if you're a casual fan, then it's probably best to stick to the anime or manga. This particular piece by Mr. Padula is clearly an effort to align fans of the series here in the West with an abundant amount of details that are misinterpreted or altogether absent in the translations that reach our shores. The reader gains a newfound appreciation and depth of understanding for the series which encompass stories as old as the 400+ year old "Journey to the West" to the more modern sci-fi stories of the 20th century.I've already started Volume 2 where things get much more intriguing but Volume 1 definitely lays the foundation for things to come in this projected 7 volume program. This volume also has the honor to serve as a de-facto biography to the author of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama, whom, as a secluded individual, is very hard to find out about. If you're a Westerner that has wanted to straddle the gulf inherent in an Eastern story, then this is your read! The culture is so different to our own that it invites curiosity but in that journey to satisfy those questions we find the Heart; that essence of spirit that speaks to us all: timeless storytelling that eventually points out that the differences are only a flimsy veneer.

I liked the biography of Akira Toriyama very much, and I learned here what I probably never would have learned anywhere else. I recommend this book to any Dragon Ball fan, casual or hardcore. I didn't dislike anything about the book.
