This book has been an invaluable resource for me. First, there are no best practices in teaching world history (other than AP standards) because this is such a new field. Therefore the discussions and ideas raised by these distinguished authors give the rest of us a great starting point for our own discussions. Secondly, there are fantastic references in here. I have gone on to order other books based on the works in this one. If you are a new or experienced teacher looking to reassess or create a world history curriculum this book will certainly give you food for thought and a framework to build upon. I highly recommend this book.

Good book so far. Pretty helpful not only for world history but for history in general. A lot of good information with examples of question types, rubrics, and lessons. Not a good content resource but that's not what it advertises. Very helpful to the new teacher!

But buy it when you have time to read it - it is not arranged in chronological order, so it is hard to work with DURING the school year. Definitely a summer read, to assimilate after you have been to training.

This book reads like a Mark Twain story as Jackson "thows" his famous gooseball from childhood through imprisonment in WWII. I laughed out loud on more than one occasion, and teared up some, too. This is a page-turner you won't want to end.

I originally bought this book when it was first published (I've since bought & gifted numerous copies) because I knew Rick Norman's law partner. Usually a book of this size I'd start/finish between getting home after work (dinner, dishes, Mom/son time) and going to bed. Not this one. This took processing time, and re-reading time. Also takes a box of tissues - either you'll be laughing so hard or touched so deeply, and sometimes both on the same page. A lot of the reviews are high school students but don't think it's written at an 8th grade level. This book deserves recognition as one of the most outstanding books ever written.

I read Fielder's Choice for the first time not long after it was published. Since then, I've reread it a dozen times, I think.This novel is written in first person, in the voice of Gooseball Fielder, whose promising major league career with the St. Louis Browns stumbles to a halt almost as soon as it gets started. Weeks later, the news of Pearl Harbor fills the US airwaves, and Fielder signs up, finding the anonymity afforded by an army uniform a welcome relief.Fielder tells his story to a US Army major in early 1946 after having been accused of aiding and abetting the enemy while being held as a prisoner of war in Japan. From these snippets, you might expect a dark novel, even brooding. Fielder's Choice is anything but.The name of Fielder's hometown in Arkansas--Smackover--is a clue in itself that this is a novel that will make you laugh. Fielder's narrative voice is reminiscent of Henry Wiggen's in Mark Harris's first novel, The Southpaw; it seems obvious to me that Rick Norman is well acquainted with Harris's work. But Fielder is more naïve than Wiggen, less worldly, and the story he relates bears this out.The humor in Fielder's Choice is nicely balanced by the hardships Fielder endures, both at home and in the prison camp. But the darkness the novel touches on is never overwrought, partly due to Norman's wisdom in using Fielder's own voice to tell the story. Fielder finds redemption long before the ending of the novel, though the Merkle-esque welcome he receives a quarter century after his fall from grace is a welcome touch at the end.Norman's first novel, Fielder's Choice deserves a place as one of the great works of baseball fiction.

I really enjoyed reading this novel to my 10 year old son (he could have read it himself but I just like to read him stories) that follows a young man's path through baseball, war and well just life. At times it is very funny and others sad but always well written. When I finished the book I actually googled the character's name because the book made him seem so real.

I purchased Fielder's Choice for my son and to reach the minimum dollar amount on my [Amazon.com] order to get free shipping. Just by chance, I picked it up for a quick browse and to my surprise, didn't put the book down until I finished reading it. This is basiclly a story about about a boy coming of age,growing into manhood, told through the background of baseball and war. Fielder's Choice is a warm hearted story full of both laughs and tears. The main character, Gooseball Fielder is the persona of Forrest Gump in baseball flannels discovering that life throws the hardest curves .Rick Norman is a great story teller. He constructed the book in such a fashion, that after finishing it, I needed to check baseball references to see if the story of Gooseball Fielder was true.

Norman's first novel shows his deftness with balancing both the humorous and serious sides of life. It is difficult to call this book a comedy, yet equally difficult to call it a drama, a trait that makes this book truly special. My 11th grade students loved it, and so did their teacher, proving it to be an enjoyable read for young and old alike.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. Rick Norman's use of comedy and tradegy really set this book apart from others. I would reccomend this book to anyone. I even wrote about it in my column in the local newspaper. I just wish there was a sequel. I think that if you read any book at all, this one will surpass it by far.

I gave it a four star because the book is somewhat confusing due to the author's writing style. There's nothing wrong with the physical book. That earns a five star. And I bought the international edition, which is the same as the US edition, just paperback, cheaper, and printed on thinner paper. Content was identical to my classmate's book. Writing style aside, this is probably the single most useful class I took in college. I still use the book, and I've been out of college for a few years. Everything from student loans to house mortgage to everything in between.

1. The organization method changes constantly.2. The authors alternate between using PSEUDO-MATH forcing you to use massive tables in the back of the book if you choose to do things by hand. They'll give you the actual equations that real people use but don't document the equations well enough to use without finding them explained 3rd party.3. Some words are bold, making you think they are key terms, never to be used again.4. Example problems don't provide enough explanation to understand without having studied and understood every chapter prior.

It gets the job done, but you will get sleepier than you ever have in your entire life trying to read it. Not really the books fault, just economics in general.

Helps a lot in the beginning of the class where you have no idea how anything works. Practice problems are pretty good too and paced well.

It's hard to avoid a book that's mandatory for a class, but if you have other options I suggest you steer away from this one. I've never seen a more poorly written text book in both my undergrad and grad level courses! This book is a complete disaster. The questions/problems at the end of the chapter assigned for homework do not have supporting examples to learn from. It is a complete guessing game at how to arrive at the correct answer. I had to buy this book for my class but do not plan on using it afterwards. It is completely worthless!

Covers look great but the spine was begingging to separate toward the back but no pages are falling out. At some point, a previous owner wrote on several pages and attepted to erase it but only really managed to rub the ink away. This book shows a bit more ware than I would have liked, but it's a text book. Overall, this was a good buy.

Lecture slides for my class were good, so I basically never used it. But from when I did use it, it could be confusing at times but basically did what was needed.

Ever since, at age 8, I bought a copy of FAMOUS MONSTERS #7 off the newsstand in Santa Monica I've been a great fan of James Warren's publications. He struck a note with the baby boomers as they grew up in the '50's and '60's and '70's. Having enjoyed his magazines over the years, Bill Schelly's new book goes behind the scenes and presents a fully explored biography of the man behind the magazines. Warren's business practices, artistic attitude and general outlook on life as he went from the bottom to the top to the bottom again is well presented. So many photos of people contemporaneous with the time that have never been seen before really add a special note to the book which is, appropriately, visually rich with art, photos and more. Bill's prose flows smoothly and his style and subject matter keeps the reader going and going until suddenly the book ends. This is definitely Bill's best book yet, IMHO. Congratulations to Bill and thank you to all the people that opened up their life stories and information that related to James Warren, a very unique and complex character. Any person who enjoys the history of comic books and magazines from this era and the behind-the-scenes business machinations is in for a treat. Buy it now!

This book is a must for every Baby Boom monster kid. This voluminous tome revealed to me an era of publishing closest to my childhood heart. When I was a kid I loved Famous Monsters of Filmland but for me the holy grails of magazines were Spacemen and Screen Thrills Illustrated. I never saw the actual magazines, only the ads for them, but I can still remember the images of the covers. I viewed this book with the same sense of wonder. James Warren had a knack for publishing almost every magazine I ever wanted when I was a kid.Warren was quite a guy. With Hugh Hefner as a contemporary and an alleged affair with Jane Fonda, he was quite the bon vivant around the big city. I will thumb through this book several times before I get serious and read it from cover to cover, and I will savor it in the same way I once savored the tattered pages of Famous Monsters.

This is a great book on a legendary figure in pop culture of the 60s and 70s-- to many of us Boomer kids Famous Monsters was our gateway to classic monsters and more. Creepy and Eerie were Monster Comics when there was a drought of them and all of this thanks to James Warren. Warren also introduced many of us to Will Eisner's SPIRIT which was innovative in the 40s and nearly forgotten when he reprinted them. All brilliant work.The book is well researched, entertaining and loaded with photos and illustrations-- this is a terrific read and if you love the spirit of the old Warren Magazines you'll dig this.Schelly keeps the text moving and you'll be rooting for Jimmy throughout the ups and downs of his publishing empire.Highest recommendation!

Despite my passion for American pop culture and in particular comics produced around or during the Silver Age, James Warren was never a name that frequently came up on my radar. Although I dabbled in horror comics, EC left me cold, and while I perused copies of friends’ Creepy and Eerie purchases, I soon went scurrying back to super-heroes and sci-fi, and didn’t mourn the cancellations of any of Marvel’s horror titles, even though I read most of them.James Warren’s contribution to one of the most creative decades of the 20th century was, however, significant. It was to be in the right place at the right time to give us Famous Monsters of Filmland and Screen Thrills Illustrated, and instigate the black and white horror comic magazines that circumvented the Comics Code Authority for better or occasionally worse. For better meant opportunities for American artists like Ditko, Colan, and Adams to stretch and experiment, not just with content but style; for Spanish artists like Gonzales and Maroto to display their talents to the U.S.; to present to the world the iconic and erotic, if vacuous Vampirella; and a powerful but sabotaged anti-war comic at the height of America’s involvement in Vietnam. The worst included the tasteless and lamentable adult sci-fi comic 1984, which as usual, meant adult as in pitifully immature and vulgar. He produced nothing truly original, it had all been done before, but created a whole new medium to present it in.This is an excellent and fascinating book, filling in a lot of gaps in my knowledge and organising in sequence and with clarity many of the things I already knew about (the only story not covered seems to be his feud with B-movie monster maker Paul Blaisdell). The story of James Warren the person is a compelling and intriguing one, with an ending that reads like a script for a Hollywood feelgood movie, as he is plunged to the depths of despair but then moves full circle to re-discover… well, I’ll not spoil it. In his heyday, Warren created an image for himself, and then moved into it, making as much of it a reality as he could and faking the rest; his failings were also his virtues, and vice versa. He got lucky as often as he got unlucky, coping poorly with bad luck, and making his own good luck with astonishing gall and bravura.Author Bill Schelly has both spoken to, and gathered interview quotes from, the people who knew him and worked with him, some of whom liked him, and some of whom clearly didn’t. He had as many friends as enemies, but nobody left his company without an opinion. Everybody concerned seems to have had their legitimate reasons for the position they have taken, and the author sensibly takes no sides, leaving events to speak for themselves. You don’t have to like him, but you have to admire him. We encounter the late Forrest J. Ackerman and his massive ego, and discover who did what at Famous Monsters, meet the arrogant but admired humourist Harvey Kurtzman and how he soured his relationship with Warren, hear numerous amusing end-of-the-evening-style anecdotes, skim the contents of Creepy and Eerie, watch the quality and sales figures rise and fall, certain titles fail and others scrape by (and why), see Warren crash and burn and then rise phoenix-like from the ashes, and get a fascinating insight into the all too often overlooked business side, its bitter realities, opportunism, and outrageous but legal loopholes.On the way, who should pass through but Terry Gilliam, John Cleese, Flo Steinberg, Wally Wood, schlockmeister Sam Sherman, sleazy operator Myron Fass, the late, litigious Harlan Ellison (who had an iron-clad case this time), Hugh Hefner, and Wonder Woman advocate Gloria Steinem. Warren was very much a businessman first and foremost, but as a graphic designer himself, understood, appreciated and enabled his artists, a rare quality in a money man. He was cruelly practical, occasionally generous and sympathetic, short-tempered, and blunt and brutally honest with fandom, but behaved like a child with regard to rival publishers when they launched similar titles or employed ‘his’ artists. You don’t demand loyalty from freelancers submitting stuff on spec, that’s the opposite of freelancing. Warren took everything personally, while telling everyone else “it’s business”.Schelly was unable to speak to the subject himself, now in his nineties and apparently writing his memoirs, but given Warren’s obsession with his image, and openly admitted tendency to create a cult of personality for himself, and allowing for the integrity and fairness of this work, this may be the best bet for an honest account of Warren’s legacy, which in the big picture may be minor, yet in many ways could also be considered substantial. One could go years without being touched by Warren’s accomplishments or hearing his name, and yet he has earned his place as a prime mover in popular culture. Warren’s all-important abilities as a businessman, and thus a facilitator for the creative elements he gave a platform, shine through and dominate the text. It might have been nice to have big glossy pages full of examples of his magazines, but I don’t think that is the true function of this text-heavy book. The illustrations shown are relevant to the matters being discussed, which is useful, and there are some great photos. I read this 330 page book in three sittings over two days, so I respectfully disagree with the U.K. reviewer who criticised the quality of the writing. Having just read Stuf’ Said’s hatchet job on Stan Lee, I’ve had my fill of ‘imaginative and ingenious’ research! As the guy on Dragnet used to say, “Just the facts, ma’am”. This is the truth as the participants remember it, and there are enough of them to keep it honest. This is the story of a man who wanted it all, had it all, lost it all, and found peace. He had quite a ride.Purchased on Amazon U.K. For some reason, this product was released in the U.K. several months ago, which is why I can review so soon; I found it just a few days before the U.S. Amazon release date.

Wow, this is an amazing book. It's fantastic for explaining all aspects of theater in an easy-to-understand fashion. But it's not just for theater. Are you putting on an event for your business or a big party? There's information in this book that can help you as well. I've taken sound engineering classes in college, and this book did a better job of teaching than a whole semester in the sound lab. Not only that, but the author does a FANTASTIC job making the information speak equally to men and women. Instead of thinking that some areas are traditionally staffed by men, why not have a woman do the sound, electrical, carpentry, etc. (for, for that matter, men working in the costume shop). This book gives the information needed for anyone to consider any of these tasks with confidence. The author has a sense of humor and a great way of looking at things. When I say it's one of my favorite books, I don't just mean in the sense of a technical theater book. I mean one of the best books I've ever read. It's inspiring.

Years ago I picked a copy of this book up during a run of the second edition thinking it might be worth exploring as a textbook for an Intro to Stagecraft class. Well....he second edition left me pretty unimpressed. I put it down and pretty much forgot about it. In fact, I created my own mini textbook and threw out everything else. Now Fast foward 10 years and I noticed an updated version of the book while reconsidering a required textbook. All I can say is "YES"!!! This hits all my purposes for the class, enough that this will now be the primary text for the spring semester. Even our Sound Designer was impressed with the sound section. It's thorough, highly educational and very easy to read. Actually it's a pleasure to read! The text never feels stiff or too "teachy". I loved some of the little trivia sprinkled throughout the book. I do consider myself a very technical person and I was learning some neat things. Mr. Campbell you've outdone yourself. The only critical comment was from our sound designer who requested a further discourse on acquiring the rights to use music tracks- His words, not mine. I am delighted with this text. Very Highly Recommended!

If, like me, you have worked in theater a few years but never went to school for it or had anyone sit down and tell you "this is this and that is that" then this book is for you!!! It might even be for you if you have a background since every situation in theater is worked out to accommodate each theater!! It is an incredible resource for who does typically does what but he also lets you know that "typical" and "theater" goes together however you need it to go together for your production.For me, knowing what is known out there among long-time theater workers and professionals has been fantastic to learn. Now I at least feel like I am speaking the same language! :) Also, it was encouraging to find out that what we thought maybe we were doing wrong is actually a thing!! lol!!!Also, the author's conversational style of writing really helps!! If this was overly technical or dry I would have returned it. However, because it is so helpful and so easy to read, I plan on buying more for my fellow producers so that we all know the same stuff and can reference our own copy!!So if you have started working in theater, are thinking of starting a theater or think that maybe a career in the theater world sounds fun and interesting then I highly recommend this book!!

This is a good resource book for those having to teach a technical theatre class but who have little to no technical theatre experience themselves. I will be using some of the books info for my Drama I classes where I teach not only the acting side of theatre, but also touch on the technical side as well. the book is laid out in an easy to understand format that can be utilized by teachers.

Simply put, this is the most helpful book on the technical side of theater I have ever read. Mr. Campbell is a rare individual. Although a technician, he has written a sympathetic and yet extremely informative book on lighting, sound, stage terminology, etc. The amount of really usefull information in the book is astounding. I am a high school drama teacher, and I think this book should be in the library of every theater teacher and theater student. No other book I've read so clearly explains the essentials one needs to know about the technical craft of theater. If you are a person who doesn't want a book where the author is trying to show what an expert he or she is and what an idiot you are, then Drew Campbell's book is just the one for you. He is an expert who understands his job is to help those of us who aren't. Bravo for this book. I hope Mr. Campbell keeps writing on theater. We can use his knowledge, wit, and empathy. Five stars for this book, and a few thrown in for the actor with glass in his butt telling jokes on the way to the hospital. Thanks for a great book.

This book was brilliant! I'm studying to become a teacher in Texas which requires one to take a content exam over theatre. I needed to brush up on my tech (especially lighting and sound), and this was the perfect book to do it! Drew Campbell writes in a very relatable fashion, and makes jokes along the way. I would highly recommend it!

I love this book. The title seems a little misleading though since it comes off as though it is for people not in technical theatre. Anyone working in whichever technical department should read this book. This should be required reading for people just getting into technical theatre although even if you have been in theatre for a number of years, it should be very useful still. It is very detailed with so many facets of theatre which is why it will probably be my first go-to book about anything that I need to find.

I purchased this for my high school technical theatre class and it is amazing! Has great explanations and lots of example drawings to help students understand the concepts.
